July 7: Martinez vs. Eaton

New York Mets at Philadelphia Phillies, Jul 7, 2008 7:05 PM EDT

After the latest in a string of excruciating Sunday afternoon losses, the Phillies try to salvage a split with the suddenly scary Mets at OFJOAB tonight. Adam Eaton gets the start, trying to recapture his old form as a Mets-killer; he's still never taken a loss against New York, but has four straight no-decisions after winning his first five career starts. Pedro Martinez goes for New York; the future Hall of Famer has given up at least five runs in each of his last three starts, going no more than 5 2/3 in any of them. He still scares the hell out of me.

Adam Eaton. Why are you the way you are?

Always count on the Phillies to make a fading pitcher look like he is still in his prime. I would be surprised/thrilled if we got 4 hits and 2 runs off of Pedro tonight.

Just got in. Would it save time to just begin every Eaton start with the Phils trailing 2-0?

3-0…I have been trying to ease up on him because of all these QSes, but every time he pitches I get an urge to run my fingernails over a chalk board and bash my head against a cinder block wall. He just doesn’t inspire confidence. We NEED another starter. We will lose this division if we don’t obtain one.

Forget this. I am done for the night. This is a joke.

Eff this. Odds that Pedro blows a 5-0 lead against our lineup of corpse-type hitters are only slightly better than Eaton winning the 2008 Cy Young.

I don't understand the taking of pitches...

You would swear the Phils were seeing Pedro for the first time ever.

Swindle

Unfortunately, this is a perfect game for Swindle’s first major league appearance. Let’s see if it happens….

Maybe 55 MPH curve balls aren’t so good vs. major leaguers…

Swindle did well against the two left-handed batters. Future LOOGY?

Scratch that – Swindle with a followup 1-2-3 inning. Go, Swindle, go!

Watching a few of his at-bats, I definitely see LOOGY possibilities.

That Delgado K using the curve was so awesome.

Swindle

That first inning was quite a disaster. But, the next two were pretty awesome. He made a few big name hitters look foolish. Lefty-specialist is definitely in his future. Although even the righties looked bad against him in innings two and three. Maybe I’ll try to get another interview with him tomorrow….

I admit I didn’t really watch this at all after it was 10-2 or so… but that late comeback had to be pretty epic.

Maybe it’ll wake them the hell up, because nothing else seems to have done it.

Yeah, I just checked the score as well. Craziness. I am still confused as to why Utley was not in the game for the last inning. At least all the big guns went deep.

I see Swindle got into the game. First inning he was in looked rough, but after that he seemed to have gained some confidence. Also seemed to do well against the lefties.

Oh, and I just saw that Chase will be participating in the Home Run derby.

On one hand while I think he has a great shot to win it with his short, powerful stroke in lefty friendly Yankee stadium on the other hand I don’t want to see an Abreu-esque power outage from him anytime soon.
