Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Make it Stop, 7/9/08

St. Louis Cardinals at Philadelphia Phillies, Jul 9, 2008 7:05 PM EDT

It's an odd feeling to be embarrassed that your team's in first place. Probably won't have to worry about this much longer, though.

Game’s about to start. Perhaps we’ll have a lead in-game tonight; it would be the first time, save for about ten minutes Saturday, that had happened since Thursday.

Good Grab Pedro

The wife almost wrote off Happ after 5 straight balls to open. Thankfully he stopped short-arming his fastballs, for the most part.

by Cluttered_JML on Jul 9, 2008 7:57 PM EDT reply actions

Couple hard-hit balls right at guys in the first. Hopefully he’ll settle down and start locating better.

by dajafi on Jul 9, 2008 8:00 PM EDT reply actions

I think that if there is any big symptom of the Phils’ hitting woes, it is their inability to pull the trigger on any close pitch. It is almost as if they have gotten extremely hesitant at the plate. As I type, Victorino draws a four pitch walk.

Watching our “offense” is just agonizing.

by dajafi on Jul 9, 2008 8:20 PM EDT reply actions

Ruiz needs to go back to Rookie ball to learn how to hit. Or, as my father suggested: “They all need to take batting practice over the all-star break until their hands bleed”

by Cluttered_JML on Jul 9, 2008 8:34 PM EDT reply actions

That was one of the more patient Howard PA’s in a while.

by Cluttered_JML on Jul 9, 2008 9:01 PM EDT reply actions

I still hate pedro feliz

by jemagee on Jul 9, 2008 9:04 PM EDT reply actions

Among the regulars, really I hate ‘em all, other than Burrell.

by dajafi on Jul 9, 2008 9:07 PM EDT up reply actions

In a purely subjective analysis pedro feliz swings at the first pitch more than any other phillie who ain’t a pitcher

by jemagee on Jul 9, 2008 9:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Out of curiosity, i don’t recall…what inning did happ explode in last game?

by jemagee on Jul 9, 2008 9:12 PM EDT reply actions

twas the fifth, I believe

by Cluttered_JML on Jul 9, 2008 9:15 PM EDT reply actions

he made it through 4.2 last game
he’s at 4.2 right now

by jemagee on Jul 9, 2008 9:18 PM EDT reply actions

“Ruiz, Happ, Rollins” due

Not very confidence-inspiring that we’ll break the drought.

by dajafi on Jul 9, 2008 9:21 PM EDT reply actions

Me, I’m not smart.

by dajafi on Jul 9, 2008 9:41 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m confused by this recent play, i thought offense good, pitching mediocre…when did offense become suxxorz….when are they signing barry bonds?

by jemagee on Jul 9, 2008 9:22 PM EDT reply actions

Here comes the crappy sac bunt attempt

by Cluttered_JML on Jul 9, 2008 9:24 PM EDT reply actions

Do pitchers bat on these minor league teams? And why can’t they bunt when they get here?

by jemagee on Jul 9, 2008 9:26 PM EDT reply actions

Take that sarge

by jemagee on Jul 9, 2008 9:27 PM EDT reply actions

Now, for the disappointment of the less than two out/runner on third scenario

by Cluttered_JML on Jul 9, 2008 9:29 PM EDT reply actions

Alright Mr Heat Miser

Stupid 3rd base coach

by jemagee on Jul 9, 2008 9:30 PM EDT reply actions

...and like clockwork. Argghhhh!!!!

by Cluttered_JML on Jul 9, 2008 9:30 PM EDT reply actions

well, crap

I guess that’s what you get. Rollins out at home.

by WholeCamels on Jul 9, 2008 9:30 PM EDT reply actions

Having him go on contact with the heart of your order up is just dumb

by jemagee on Jul 9, 2008 9:30 PM EDT reply actions

see…chase makes the point

by jemagee on Jul 9, 2008 9:32 PM EDT reply actions

hit

Chase line drive hit to right.

Two on for Ryan.

Howard’s at-bats are like a “Choose your own adventure” book.

Woot! Howard RBI Single

by Cluttered_JML on Jul 9, 2008 9:36 PM EDT reply actions

12 game hitting streak

Is he still averaging an RBI per hit?

by jemagee on Jul 9, 2008 9:36 PM EDT reply actions

Russ Springer

Former Phillie, 1995/1996 vintage

And he K’s Burrell. Crud.

2-0 after 5.

by WholeCamels on Jul 9, 2008 9:40 PM EDT reply actions

89 pitches from Happ, 5-6-7 due. Please, another scoreless frame here.

by dajafi on Jul 9, 2008 9:42 PM EDT reply actions

Wait…i haven’t been paying attention…why the hell isn’t cole hamels going to the all star game?

by jemagee on Jul 9, 2008 9:43 PM EDT reply actions

asg

Because Charlie Manuel paid off his old buddy Tony LaRooz so Cole could get some rest. Plus he’s due to pitch on Sunday and thus would probably be unavailable during the game itself.

by WholeCamels on Jul 9, 2008 9:46 PM EDT up reply actions

bad feels

I sense this is the J.A. Happ Meltdown Inning.

by WholeCamels on Jul 9, 2008 9:43 PM EDT reply actions

Nice K on Ankiel. After two heart twisting foul balls.

by Cluttered_JML on Jul 9, 2008 9:44 PM EDT reply actions

quick 2 outs

by jemagee on Jul 9, 2008 9:44 PM EDT reply actions

Geoff Jenkins looks too much like brett favre, he has to go

by jemagee on Jul 9, 2008 9:46 PM EDT reply actions

This guy’s okay, methinks.

by dajafi on Jul 9, 2008 9:47 PM EDT reply actions

Is this guy ‘overperforming’ like kendrick last year or is this kind of what he’s done all along?

by jemagee on Jul 9, 2008 9:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Averaged more than a K/IP this year in AAA. Better than KK ever did.

by WholeCamels on Jul 9, 2008 9:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Is it me, or does it look like Feliz is bailing more frequently in his swings these days?

by Cluttered_JML on Jul 9, 2008 9:52 PM EDT reply actions

Quick ‘fore sight’ – is letting Happ pitch the 7th a good idea?

by jemagee on Jul 9, 2008 9:54 PM EDT reply actions

Probably of the mind that he is facing bottom and number one of the order. But I am a bit concerned myself.

by Cluttered_JML on Jul 9, 2008 9:58 PM EDT reply actions

DIng…here we go again

by jemagee on Jul 9, 2008 10:00 PM EDT reply actions

i think now would be a good time to take him out

by jemagee on Jul 9, 2008 10:01 PM EDT reply actions

That was a terrible angle by Victorino. He probably could have gotten it, but I agree, Happ’s gotta go.

by Cluttered_JML on Jul 9, 2008 10:02 PM EDT reply actions

oh my

Pujols grand slam? Feel it in your heart?

by WholeCamels on Jul 9, 2008 10:07 PM EDT reply actions

They coulda left in Happ to do that

by Cluttered_JML on Jul 9, 2008 10:07 PM EDT reply actions

The wife was already saying 4-2 and then he only hit the fly ball to Burrell.

by Cluttered_JML on Jul 9, 2008 10:08 PM EDT reply actions

And now it’s 3-2

Choose that adventure

by jemagee on Jul 9, 2008 10:36 PM EDT reply actions

Howard with the delightfully unexpected bomb there.

by dajafi on Jul 9, 2008 10:36 PM EDT reply actions

Happy Pete with a bomb, 4-2 Phils.

What are the odds that ESPN replays the 2005 NLCS Pujols homer off Lidge?

by WholeCamels on Jul 9, 2008 10:44 PM EDT reply actions

So I’m watching the Extra INnings (CSN) feed over ESPN…did harry just say the phillies take a 2 run lead in the 9th? I’m doing homework and listening in the background

by jemagee on Jul 9, 2008 10:46 PM EDT reply actions

my point was that he said a 2 run lead in the NINTH (so i heard)...being a home game i found it odd that they’d take a 2 run lead…one should be enough in the ninth right?

by jemagee on Jul 9, 2008 10:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Did it in the 8th. Harry’s, y’know, old.

Lidge slams the door after jiggling with the keys, and my digestive system, by walking two Cardinals and giving up some foul bullets.

Big win for the good guys.

by dajafi on Jul 9, 2008 11:03 PM EDT reply actions

Happ

Gotta say he’s been unexpectedly strong both starts.
