They wore onions on their belts. Which was the style at the time.: Phillies at Padres, 8/15/08
Philadelphia Phillies at San Diego Padres, Aug 15, 2008 10:05 PM EDT
Well, if we can't enjoy victory, we can at least enjoy the novelty of watching two of the oldest men alive square off against each other, lobbing 82 MPH heaters and generally being "wily."
Jamie Moyer squares off against Hall of Famer Greg Maddux in the opening game of a three-game set in San Diego.
The Phillies look to rebound off a completely terrible series of games in Los Angeles, where the 1999 All-Stars -- Jeff Kent, Manny Ramirez, and Nomar Garciaparra -- completely emasculated them.
Are we going to look back at the Dodgers of 2008 the way we see the Marlins in 2003, and the Astros in 2005? That team that completely had the Phillies number, and single-handedly kept the Phils out of the playoffs in always heartbreaking fashion, while riding their dominance of the Phillies to a World Series berth? I guess we'll know for sure later this month.

i gotta admit
There might not be three words in any language right now that I find more depressing than “Jenkins, Bruntlett, Ruiz.”

Exactly…when you look at Jenkins, Bruntlett, Ruiz it doesn’t require a degree in astrophysics to understand why we are so ass crack awful offensively.
I can’t remember the last time even 2 of those three guys have gotten hits in the same inning.

They are saving my marriage
When they are are due up in stead of hearing the old lady spout off about getting off my fat, lazy ass I go clean a toilet or do the dishes etc. I find it more satisfying than watching the bottom of the order flail away at air.

You’re a wise man. You’ll not only assuage the wife, you’ll probably live longer by missing the guaranteed pain those jackasses deliver with their staggering ineptitude.

Ah, I see you’d finished all your household chores ;)

SEE! Already these fucking clowns blow an opportunity. It doesn’t really matter if one of them gets a hit, because there is no way in hell the other two will be able to drive them in.
This team is doomed.

My only regret is that they can’t set some sort of record for futility if they are going to be so futile. A record breaking scoreless inning streak would lighten the mood a little bit. Speaking for myself, I know that it would give me something positive into which I could channel my negativity and cynicism.

This is sort of like my thing now where if the Phils don’t get a hit in the first two or three innings, I start sort of rooting for the no-hitter against them even if the game is close…

HAHA, me too. Sadly, me too. It’s a sad day to be a Phillies fan Daj.

Well, there have been much worse. You probably don’t remember 1987 thru 2000 as well as I do, f’rinstance… they’ve got lineup issues, absolutely, and if someone wants to argue that the chemistry is off, I guess I can at least entertain the notion. But essentially the problem is that Gillick lost a lot of bets this year: Jenkins, Ruiz, arguably Feliz (though I think he’s been as good as most expected). And Rollins and Howard are really down from previous years.
These are solvable problems, though not necessarily this year. The Mets aren’t really so great either.

I remember ’96 thru ’00 pretty well. Yeah that sucked. But the way they were cruising back in late May-early June makes this all the more painful.

This is all too familiar. I don’t even know why I am watching this.

Do you guys realize Maddux is 42 and Moyer is 45? I can’t believe Wheels, Harry, or T-Mac haven’t mentioned this yet.

It really is fun for me to see these old ‘flame throwers’ still not only pitching but enjoying the game. So much knowledge to pass on to the young guys.

Y’know, eff me.
Stupid call, bad execution, bad luck.
I hate the sac bunt.
Meanwhile, Bud Black morphing into Tony LaRussa here.

Utley
God is he overdue. Come on Chase, do something.

This is where Cholly’s stubborn insistence on batting Howard and Utley back to back looks really stupid.

See! fuck! This is so fuckin frustrating. 2 on, no outs, heart of the order, nothing.

Howard K’s…what a surprize. Had them sugar plum RBI in his head methinks.

I would say...
…that the top of the 8th inning there was the Phils’ last two months in a nutshell. Two leadoff baserunners, then a failed bunt (when Vic should never have been bunting anyway), and back-to-back K’s by Utley and Howard.
Now if only Madson gives up a 2-run dinger this inning, we’ll get the bullpen’s last two months in a nutshell.

Man those anthropomorphic gloves sure are performing tonight. Those gloves are the best player on this team.

Another professional AB from Jenkins there. Swings at one that could have hit his foot, bat on shoulder for the meatball.
Though So walked, I still think Taguchi/Jenkins/Bruntlett might be even more spiritually corrosive than Jenkins/Bruntlett/Ruiz.

Man, I am pumped to see Lidge try to hold down a 1 run lead after not having pitched in several days.

That 9th inning was like a Twilight Zone of offensive suck.

Jenkins, Bruntlett, Ruiz
All three K on called strikes. And Jim-Me questions why the Phans boo this horseshit.
by Steve-O- on Aug 16, 2008 12:35 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
oh hell yeah
Lidge was absolutely filthy in that inning, against (at least by SD standards) good hitters. It’s awesome to see him at his best.

Well, a win is a win I guess…but really, if San Diego had managed a measly 2 runs the way we would have thought about this game would have been a lot different. Essentially what I am saying is that you might be able to get away with scoring 1 run against San Diego, but that is just not gonna cut it. This offense still looks like it is terminally ill.
by FuquaManuel on Aug 16, 2008 12:43 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Moyer, Hamels and (recent) Myers need to get together and do a Full Metal Jacket style Blanket Party on the offense. Those guys have been outstanding.
