Camp Pain: Here! Nationals at Phillies, 8/19/08
Washington Nationals at Philadelphia Phillies, Aug 19, 2008 7:05 PM EDT
The Phillies return home after a hellish west coast trip, hoping to take advantage of a reeling Washington Nationals squad that rolls in on a 10 game losing streak. I guess there's always a slower, dumber fish.
Joe "Cookies" Blanton goes for the Phillies against Jason Bergmann, who just this May held the Phils to five hits and no runs over seven innings.

Seems like more of same tonight thus far—some hard-hit balls right at people. But they won’t be shut out, so I guess that’s something.

Blanton has thrown 61 pitches and allowed three straight hits in the 4th. Nats lead 2-1.
Has anyone else noticed that we pretty much never get out noted superstars Lastings Milledge or Jesus Flores?
I’m almost at the point where I hope they allow twelve runs this inning so I can go do something else with my evening.

Just woke up from my evening nap and see the phightens have a whopping 2 hits through 4. Hum seems to be a mounting problem eh. Anyway can you shed some light on the kind of reception Jim-Me has gotten so far? I know what mine would be. lol

I think mixed. He’s hit the ball hard twice (I didn’t see the 1st inning), but nothing to show for it.

Thanks. Here’s one for you. I was online yesterday and saw ESPN had a live chat with Howard that was scheduled but running late. I dashed off a question. In part I said I noticed his hips flying open and could that be the reason he was swinging over the ball. Hey it’s a fair question. Alas it wasn’t answered……

Phils put up their first multi-run inning in… what? I guess since the first inning Saturday. Victorino triple, Dobbs dropped popup to score a run, Dobbs steals second, Coste single off Belliard’s glove, PH sac fly RBI by Jenkins… 4-6-3 DP by Rollins, who’s booed lustily, to end it. It’s 4-3 Washington.

Does anybody else think the fans’ reaction is making it that much harder for this team to do well? Do they think they are helping out by showing Jimmy how much they think of him? And I wonder, do those fans feel better by booing “lustily?”

You could write, and people have written, whole books on the twisted collective psyche of the Philadelphia sports fan. The question is unanswerable, because it’s not going to change unless and until a Philly team wins a title, and who knows whether that will happen before society collapses…

Just thinking out loud – I guess to me it’s a sad commentary when any crowd turns on its one-time hero. I suppose Jimmy would have been cheered if he’d simply said the Philadelphia sports fans are the best and left it at that. So much for trying to give a thoughtful answer to the question.

I’d like to think it was the “front-runner” line that got him the grief. Everybody knows Philadelphia fans are harsh and irrational (the Burrell hate all those years, etc). But they are loyal. They have frigging sellout tonight, against a terrible team when the club hasn’t hit in two months. (Granted, the $1 hot dogs likely play a role.) To say that is one thing; to call them flighty is just incorrect. He amended the comment, but at that point the irrationality and persecution complex kicked in.

Very strong relief work tonight from Durbin (two scoreless innings) and Madson (one, with 2 Ks).

Plus, it wasn't a smart thing to say...
while the phillies are in such a slump. Maybe if they were winning he could say this, but if you are looking for support from fans, calling them “frontrunners” while your offense is in such a decline is not the smartest way to go about it.

Shell is an unfortunate name for a pitcher.

So was Freddie Garcia (in Philly anyway).

Werth absolutely crushes one… and with the wind blowing straight in, it barely leaves the yard. Weird. I’ll take it.

Wow. This must be the least satisfying 5 runs I have ever seen them score. Does this count as an offense “outburst”?
by FuquaManuel on Aug 19, 2008 9:27 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Really? I find the fact that they were 3 for 3 on sac flies after the last month to be quite satisfying.

I guess you are right…but hitting with runners in scoring position should be the goal, right? Not flying out.
Plus, how often are they going to be in the position to score 3 runs on sac flies?

It doesn’t count when you can never be satisfied.

That’s a cheap shot and I resent that characterization. I would have been satisfied if they had scored 8 runs on 10 hits. But I am sorry if I refuse to be enthused by an offensive “explosion” that saw 3 sac flies.
Hooray for the win though…here’s to hoping we can sweep.

Wait, you don’t think that my characterization of you is appropriate? I mean, let’s be serious here. You know you are a negative fan right? You see the worst in the situations rather than the best. If I had read that you wrote, “You know, they could have gotten a few more hits, but 5 runs is better than what they have been doing, they had some good situational ABs and I am much happier with this effort.” I would have just turned off my computer, stripped nude, curled up in a ball and rocked back and forth awaiting the impending meteor to strike the world and destroy us all. Or at least grab one of the flying pigs so I could make some ribs tomorrow night.

Ok, congratulations, you win. I get it. There is no room for people who see the worst in situations on this board. Thus, I won’t burden you with my opinion anymore.

Nobody said there wasn't room for you
Neither jonk nor anyone else on this thread tried to silence you or shut you down or belittle you. Jonk just responded to a comment you made with a comment of his own. Jeez, lighten up. It’s like you’re seeing the worst in TGP reactions to your comments or something…

Good comeback win. Need more basrunners though.

Credit where due—I thought that was a pretty nice win.
They were down 4-1, chipped away, got great bullpen work, and won it late. Sort of game you absolutely need to take against a bad team.

For some reason it reminded me of some of the ugly wins from last year when, I think, the Phillies led the league in come-from-behind wins – a game that they had to win but it didn’t seem like they would because they got behind early – but somehow managed to come out on top. If the Braves can win some games this week, the Phillies could make some progress.
