The Phillies play the first game of a short two-gamer this week in Philadelphia -- the Mets' last (regular season*) trip to Philadelphia this year.

Two pitchers who both get by on guile -- one of whom used to have the raw stuff -- face off in South Philly, with Pedro Martinez and Jamie Moyer hoping to keep their respective team's hot streaks alive.

I would really like to win this game.

Dangit. That’s a bad start.

by FuquaManuel on Aug 26, 2008 7:08 PM EDT reply actions

If the first two batters are any indications, this could be one of those nights for Jamie. It’s been a while since he’s had one of those nights.

by FuquaManuel on Aug 26, 2008 7:11 PM EDT reply actions

Haha, he just can’t get anyone out. I hope we are still in this thing after 1.

by FuquaManuel on Aug 26, 2008 7:13 PM EDT reply actions

Jesus Christ…uh, get the bullpen up maybe?

by FuquaManuel on Aug 26, 2008 7:20 PM EDT reply actions

Calm down FM. Pedro won’t go more than 5, and yes their BP sucks. We’ll win it.

by Steve-O- on Aug 26, 2008 7:21 PM EDT reply actions

I hope our hitters can have at bats that are as good as the Mets’ 1-5 hitters. Patience is a virtue. Oh, who am I kidding.

by FuquaManuel on Aug 26, 2008 7:23 PM EDT reply actions

Jimmy has been on base in each of his last 6 plate appearances…that is what we need from a leadoff hitter.

by FuquaManuel on Aug 26, 2008 7:27 PM EDT reply actions

Cheers no Jeers for Rollins

Maybe all is forgiven. So good to see him start where he left off last night.

by Steve-O- on Aug 26, 2008 7:28 PM EDT reply actions

Happy Pete

batting .119 against the Mets so why is Dobbs on the bench?

by Steve-O- on Aug 26, 2008 7:31 PM EDT reply actions

Neither pitcher is looking great…should be quite interesting.

by FuquaManuel on Aug 26, 2008 7:31 PM EDT reply actions

Am I the only one dreading Ryan Howard’s AB here?

by FuquaManuel on Aug 26, 2008 7:33 PM EDT reply actions

3 pitches, K. Hitter, no…swinger, yes.

by FuquaManuel on Aug 26, 2008 7:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Had a phone call and missed Howards AB. How pathetic did he look? The ESPN announcers slammed him a few times the 2 games they had the Dodgers on.

by Steve-O- on Aug 26, 2008 7:43 PM EDT up reply actions

About as pathetic as usual, if not more. WAAAAY in front of a change up for strike 1, fouls off a fastball, and swings at a fastball up and in. I don’t think I have ever seen a baseball player with such miserable pitch recognition, it’s really just astounding at this point.

by FuquaManuel on Aug 26, 2008 7:49 PM EDT up reply actions

That was an awful inning. Really awful.

by FuquaManuel on Aug 26, 2008 7:37 PM EDT reply actions

Werth

Nice 10 pitch AB. K’d on a high FB though.

by Steve-O- on Aug 26, 2008 7:52 PM EDT reply actions

Just when I was about to say the Phillies are showing the patience needed to drive Pedro’s pitch count up, Ruiz does the same old stupid thing of grounding out on the first pitch. How can a catcher hitting .220 think the best thing is to swing at that pitch?

by phillyinportland on Aug 26, 2008 7:56 PM EDT reply actions

Jamie has nothing tonight. Looks like a “sweep” is in the cards as I really don’t see us beating Santana, who will probably go the distance tomorrow.

by FuquaManuel on Aug 26, 2008 7:58 PM EDT reply actions

Oh that’s a joke…how is Beltran not out there? The ball clearly hit him in fair territory.

by FuquaManuel on Aug 26, 2008 8:03 PM EDT reply actions

I really fucking hate Fernando Tatis.

by FuquaManuel on Aug 26, 2008 8:06 PM EDT reply actions

And I hate the Mets too.

by FuquaManuel on Aug 26, 2008 8:07 PM EDT reply actions

Pull him now he’s done.

by Steve-O- on Aug 26, 2008 8:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh yeah, and I hate that little pipsqueak Jose Reyes too.

by FuquaManuel on Aug 26, 2008 8:09 PM EDT reply actions

So much for the streak of not allowing more than three runs in a game.

by phillyinportland on Aug 26, 2008 8:09 PM EDT reply actions

Pedro keeps it up with a hit…Jesus I like Jamie but this is torture.

by Steve-O- on Aug 26, 2008 8:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Good, let’s get Taguchi’s AB out of the way early in this game.

by FuquaManuel on Aug 26, 2008 8:13 PM EDT reply actions

I agree. We should save Tracy for a more important part of the game, if we get lucky.

by phillyinportland on Aug 26, 2008 8:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Is it time for Andy Tracy or does Moyer stay in?

by phillyinportland on Aug 26, 2008 8:13 PM EDT reply actions

Pat

Now 1 for 22 against Pedro….say does that mean Pedro owns him?

by Steve-O- on Aug 26, 2008 8:23 PM EDT reply actions

Alrighty, this is going nowhere fast, I’m outie.

by FuquaManuel on Aug 26, 2008 8:26 PM EDT reply actions

When did Damion Easley turn into ARod?

by phillyinportland on Aug 26, 2008 8:27 PM EDT reply actions

The Big Choke

Nap time fellas. Let’s get Johan tomorrow.

by Steve-O- on Aug 26, 2008 8:37 PM EDT reply actions

Another diabolical play by Howard to make Pedro bat with two outs. Getting picked off first on Sunday night was another great Howard ploy, allowing Victorino to lead off the next inning.

by phillyinportland on Aug 26, 2008 8:52 PM EDT reply actions

Howard knew what he was doing. Just by the way, on July 7th it was 10-1 Mets (behind Pedro) going into the bottom of the 6th. Final score 10-9. On July 22nd it was 5-1 Mets after 6. Final score 8-6 Phillies against the no-Wagner bullpen. Don’t give up yet. You never know with these two teams.

by phillyinportland on Aug 26, 2008 9:03 PM EDT reply actions

and back in it in extra innings on a game i had turned off in the 3rd

Back runners more like it.

For Who? My teammates.

MYERS hitting!

This is ridiculous. Sleep is for little fairies!

by WholeCamels on Aug 27, 2008 12:21 AM EDT reply actions

Take strikes, Brett. Three, if necessary.

by WholeCamels on Aug 27, 2008 12:21 AM EDT reply actions

he just should not swing the bat

by pjnc2003 on Aug 27, 2008 12:21 AM EDT reply actions

myers to pinch hit. That’s the last thing they’ll be expecting. Please strike out!

by PhDave on Aug 27, 2008 12:22 AM EDT reply actions

One of the worst hitting pitchers ever.

I almost said “They should let Moyer hit.” Forgetting that he started this game, so very long ago.

by WholeCamels on Aug 27, 2008 12:23 AM EDT reply actions

that’s fine, 1 down

by pjnc2003 on Aug 27, 2008 12:23 AM EDT reply actions

good job Brett. Never even thought about swinging.

by PhDave on Aug 27, 2008 12:23 AM EDT reply actions

FAR OUT!!!!!!!

AMAZING (Mets)!

by WholeCamels on Aug 27, 2008 12:24 AM EDT reply actions

Front runners are back on the bandwagon

by PhDave on Aug 27, 2008 12:26 AM EDT reply actions

My god.

Welcome back to first place, gentlemen. Couldn’t have done too friggin’ much more to earn it.

by dajafi on Aug 27, 2008 12:28 AM EDT reply actions

So, I tried to go to sleep at about 10 long after I had turned this one off. Couldn’t fall asleep, turned on the TV at around 11 and got to see this.

Wowzers!!! This just seems like the kind of loss that could really knock the wind out of the Mets for a while. We will see.

SteveO--Nostradamus?

At 7:21, more than five hours ago.

by dajafi on Aug 27, 2008 12:32 AM EDT reply actions

haha…wow.

just wow. I keep thinking about how epic this was. I am just sitting, doing nothing but grinning ear to ear.

by FuquaManuel on Aug 27, 2008 12:36 AM EDT up reply actions

Contemplating the smug shit I’m going to give my Mets fan co-workers tomorrow…

by WholeCamels on Aug 27, 2008 12:39 AM EDT up reply actions

It’s taking every ounce of self-restraint I have not to be e-mailing my Mets-fan friends and coworkers with obnoxious subject headers like “Baseball’s fun yay!”

Honestly, it’s more like fear that’s keeping me back…

I Don't Believe What I Just Saw

Was at the ballpark. Utter madness. I would like to offer my formal apologies to my new hero Eric Bruntlett for every mean thing I ever said about him, including the handful of things I said in the seconds immediately preceding his double.

by taco pal on Aug 27, 2008 1:09 AM EDT reply actions

Sheesh. This game thread really didn’t do justice to the game, did it? You guys need to bring your A game on nights like this.

by taco pal on Aug 27, 2008 1:13 AM EDT reply actions

For real. I expected this thread to be ridiculous. I was at the game also and just got back. Probably the most exciting game I’ve ever been to – definitely the largest comeback.

Charlie Manuel managed the game brilliantly I thought. Playing Ruiz at 3rd for that one inning ended up being huge as it allowed Bruntlett to bat in the 9th. He also managed to get Coste up against Feliciano.

Hey now, hey now. I know some people have posted from the ballpark in the past, but I’m not quite that tech savvy.

by taco pal on Aug 27, 2008 10:59 AM EDT up reply actions

Would you believe...?

The Phillies won yesterday after being down 7 runs with 17 outs to go.

by taco pal on Aug 27, 2008 11:00 AM EDT reply actions

Omen?

And I also heard that if you fold a $20 dollar bill a certain way you can see the twin towers burning. It’s a conspiracy I tell you!
