Afterglow: Mets at Phillies, 8/27/08
New York Mets at Philadelphia Phillies, Aug 27, 2008 7:05 PM EDT
Who needs a smoke?
Apparently there was some kind of big comeback for the Phillies last night. Honestly, I was out seeing The House Bunny. Okay, that's a lie, I watched the whole damn game last night and tee-hee'd like a little schoolgirl for the last 10 innings or so.
By all appearances, tonight should be a letdown, with scorching Johan Santana likely to dominate struggling lefty power pair Utley and Howard, with a slumping Burrell unlikely to make up for that. Further, the eminently hittable Kyle Kendrick goes for the Phils.
We'll always have the 26th, everyone.

Howard
Ryan Ryan Ryan you have hands of stone, shoulda caught that throw. Geesh
Why can Kendrick NOT strike anyone out?
For Who? My teammates.
For What? To Win.
How Much? Where do I sign?
Let's get Santana out of there
Screw the pitch count. Let’s KNOCK him out of the game. EARLY. We’re capable.
Kendrick well up over 60 pitches with one out in the 4th. Oh, and he’s been down 2-0, 3-0 on everybody tonight.
He pitches with no fear, but this really is untenable. I hope he’s dealt this winter, to some team that views him the way I used to view Russ Ortiz: “He wins 12-15 games every year, he must be really good.”
(Granted, I wasn’t paid to make such judgments.)
What I really like is that Ryan Howard has discovered the apparatus known as ‘the glove’ in the past few days
He has been making some plays, but I’m probably more excited about the great ABs he’s been having against Santana tonight.
Yeah, that is true, but I figured that I would just be repeating everyone else. That DP by Vicky really steamed me there.

Wow. I wasn’t expecting that from Wright. Kendrick must be more deceptive than you’d think with so few strikeouts.

90 pitches through 5 for KK. He needs to get us through one more unscathed… Andrew Carpenter is the first guy (the only guy?) out of the bullpen.
Someone will step up no doubt. Lidge seems to be pretty good at finishing up multiple times, and maybe Seanez can come back after just pitching one inning last night. By the way, who would the Phillies have put in last night in the 14th inning if they’d failed to score? My guess is Blanton would have been the only one of the starters available, unless you kept Myers in.

It was Kendrick. He threw about 40 warmup pitches and was coming in for the 14th.
They were hoping that being a bit tired might give him a little more sink, but I think it’s just detracted from his location.
That’s interesting. If he’d gone a while last night would they have started Carpenter tonight? The wheels were really turning last night, that’s for sure.

Based on past experience, now is the time to take Kendrick out.

There’s no easy call there… the bullpen is hosed. He thought maybe he could get through this one. Obviously not.
Eyre makes me nervous here though. He threw a lot of pitches, at least by his standards, last night. But this is pretty much why they traded for him.
Strangely, I think this game might be won or lost based on how many pitches the Phils can make Santana throw in the 6th. He’s got 80 thus far.
Scott Eyre just earned a chunk of his salary there.

I didn’t think Burrell could go 0 for 10 vs. the Mets.

Chance for Victorino to make up for that DP.

Werth
I feel someething good is about to happen.
It’s surprising given recent doings to see such good ABs from Pat and Howard, and less good ABs from Vic and Werth (who just swung at an awful pitch on 0-1).
This sucks. The Phillies are going to put me in a home, and I am only in my late 20s. Then they are going to put me in a grave. Jesus. Nothing is ever easy.
My father warned me that being a Phillies fan was like writing your own prescription for a stay in the sanitarium, but I had to become a nut like him too.

Werth did have a homer against Santana, so I’m thinking he’s not doing that bad. Considering who they’re up against, getting three runs so far looks pretty good.

It’s nice to be excited for a change about an inning with Coste and Rollins coming up.

That’s weird… I thought I wrote “Seanez” in that post where I listed the Mets hitters due.
Anyway, as you can see, it’s Seanez.
Two down…only Charles the Skinny remains.

Two quick outs for His Rudeness.
But Delgado’s career numbers against him are friggin’ scary: 3-6, two jacks.
Lidge coming in? Nope. Hernandez bitterly denouncing the move.
I just saw that and my first thought was the same. Gonna keep prayin’.

Might have thought about Romero there if he was available.

Is this the first time Lidge has come in in the 8th inning this year?
by phillyinportland on Aug 27, 2008 9:52 PM EDT reply actions
Ok, that should just about do it. I am pretty sure that if Cholly had put in Lidge to face Delgado this would be a completely different ballgame. But alas, Cholly follows a brilliant coaching night with one that was chock full of blunders…learn to manage the pitching staff you must young (old) jedi.
Now the Mets are throwing the leather at us.
I know that in a rational world, given these pitching matchups, the split is okay. We’re still tied in the loss column. But tonight could have been a kick in the face to this team, and the Phils couldn’t close the deal.
They had big opportunities in the 6th and 7th and couldn’t add on runs—like the Mets last night. And Manuel just totally mismanaged the 8th. At the least he needs to do an Andy Reid type “This loss is on me” admission.
Kind of unexpected that the Mets got Santana off the hook for this one. Manuel must have really wanted this game to use Lidge like he did – and I doubt we’ll see that happen again. I see we’re getting rookie Andrew Carpenter now. Could be worth checking to see what he can add to the bullpen.

No, if Cholly really wanted to win he would have used Lidge against Delgado, being aware that Seanez is Delgado’s bitch.

I still think that if you are in the business of measuring moral victories, which I usually am not, then last night’s win counts for more than this one. But you hate to see the Phillies give back some mojo after they had just seized a lot of it the night before.
Cubs series is still pivotal…we need to split at the very least because I don’t see the mets losing 2 of 3 to the Marlins.
