Who needs a smoke?

Apparently there was some kind of big comeback for the Phillies last night.  Honestly, I was out seeing The House Bunny.  Okay, that's a lie, I watched the whole damn game last night and tee-hee'd like a little schoolgirl for the last 10 innings or so.

By all appearances, tonight should be a letdown, with scorching Johan Santana likely to dominate struggling lefty power pair Utley and Howard, with a slumping Burrell unlikely to make up for that.  Further, the eminently hittable Kyle Kendrick goes for the Phils.

We'll always have the 26th, everyone.

Ryan Ryan Ryan you have hands of stone, shoulda caught that throw. Geesh

What?

The ball went right into Reyes? Come on man. And Howard actually almost tagged him out with no glove on the throw from Kendrick.

For Who? My teammates.

For What? To Win.

How Much? Where do I sign?

As an aside I have to suffer through the Mess announcers for some reason can’t get WPHT. Anyway one of them said he has never seen a worse first baseman than Howard. Well I expect them not to praise anything to do with the Phillies. Worse… I dunno. Crappy fielder yes indeed.

by Steve-O- on Aug 27, 2008 7:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Why can Kendrick NOT strike anyone out?

For Who? My teammates.

Like Daj has said he has no out pitch. Hopefully he can come up with one this off season.

Howard you magnificant bastard!

There you go big man.

The crazy brilliant decision to play Ryan Howard against left handers.

by christonabike on Aug 27, 2008 7:31 PM EDT reply actions

whoo hooo! batting cleanup against the lefty.

by PhDave on Aug 27, 2008 7:31 PM EDT reply actions

Ryan Howard has now hit meaningful homeruns in 3 of the past 4 days. Let this be a good omen

by Cluttered_JML on Aug 27, 2008 7:38 PM EDT reply actions

You have to wonder about Santana’s intentions in carrying the bat all the way down to first base on his ground out.

Hmmmmmm….. (/Arsenio)

Damn, 18 for Werth.

Let's get Santana out of there

Screw the pitch count. Let’s KNOCK him out of the game. EARLY. We’re capable.

Kendrick spends too much time worrying about Reyes.

Who tests Victorino’s arm these days?

Gracias por el regalo, senor reyes

by Cluttered_JML on Aug 27, 2008 8:04 PM EDT reply actions

Kendrick well up over 60 pitches with one out in the 4th. Oh, and he’s been down 2-0, 3-0 on everybody tonight.

He pitches with no fear, but this really is untenable. I hope he’s dealt this winter, to some team that views him the way I used to view Russ Ortiz: “He wins 12-15 games every year, he must be really good.”

(Granted, I wasn’t paid to make such judgments.)

by dajafi on Aug 27, 2008 8:17 PM EDT reply actions

What I really like is that Ryan Howard has discovered the apparatus known as ‘the glove’ in the past few days

by Cluttered_JML on Aug 27, 2008 8:22 PM EDT reply actions

He has been making some plays, but I’m probably more excited about the great ABs he’s been having against Santana tonight.

by dajafi on Aug 27, 2008 8:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, that is true, but I figured that I would just be repeating everyone else. That DP by Vicky really steamed me there.

by Cluttered_JML on Aug 27, 2008 8:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Good inning by Kendrick.

by Cluttered_JML on Aug 27, 2008 8:36 PM EDT reply actions

Wow. I wasn’t expecting that from Wright. Kendrick must be more deceptive than you’d think with so few strikeouts.

by phillyinportland on Aug 27, 2008 8:36 PM EDT reply actions

90 pitches through 5 for KK. He needs to get us through one more unscathed… Andrew Carpenter is the first guy (the only guy?) out of the bullpen.

by dajafi on Aug 27, 2008 8:39 PM EDT reply actions

Someone will step up no doubt. Lidge seems to be pretty good at finishing up multiple times, and maybe Seanez can come back after just pitching one inning last night. By the way, who would the Phillies have put in last night in the 14th inning if they’d failed to score? My guess is Blanton would have been the only one of the starters available, unless you kept Myers in.

by phillyinportland on Aug 27, 2008 8:44 PM EDT up reply actions

It was Kendrick. He threw about 40 warmup pitches and was coming in for the 14th.

They were hoping that being a bit tired might give him a little more sink, but I think it’s just detracted from his location.

by dajafi on Aug 27, 2008 8:45 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s interesting. If he’d gone a while last night would they have started Carpenter tonight? The wheels were really turning last night, that’s for sure.

by phillyinportland on Aug 27, 2008 8:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Apparently, Jon Lieber is the bunting instructor for the Phillies

by Cluttered_JML on Aug 27, 2008 8:42 PM EDT reply actions

Based on past experience, now is the time to take Kendrick out.

by phillyinportland on Aug 27, 2008 8:52 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah, I was just wondering why exactly Kendrick was still in this ballgame. Then I remembered that Cholly really likes leaving his starters in for that extra inning…for better or for worse…

by FuquaManuel on Aug 27, 2008 8:54 PM EDT reply actions

Ok, this is just stupid…take him the hell out. NOW.

by FuquaManuel on Aug 27, 2008 8:55 PM EDT reply actions

There’s no easy call there… the bullpen is hosed. He thought maybe he could get through this one. Obviously not.

Eyre makes me nervous here though. He threw a lot of pitches, at least by his standards, last night. But this is pretty much why they traded for him.

Strangely, I think this game might be won or lost based on how many pitches the Phils can make Santana throw in the 6th. He’s got 80 thus far.

by dajafi on Aug 27, 2008 8:56 PM EDT reply actions

Like I said, Eyre kicks ass.

by dajafi on Aug 27, 2008 9:01 PM EDT up reply actions

PBF gets them out of the jam

by Cluttered_JML on Aug 27, 2008 9:00 PM EDT reply actions

Scott Eyre just earned a chunk of his salary there.

by phillyinportland on Aug 27, 2008 9:01 PM EDT reply actions

Eyre is this years’ J.C. Romero.

by FuquaManuel on Aug 27, 2008 9:03 PM EDT reply actions

Also: J.C. Romero.

;)

by dajafi on Aug 27, 2008 9:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes, J.C. Romero is also this year’s J.C. Romero…seeing as he is still the same person and he is still on the same team…hehe

What I meant was that his acquisition mirrors that of J.C. last season.

by FuquaManuel on Aug 27, 2008 9:06 PM EDT up reply actions

I didn’t think Burrell could go 0 for 10 vs. the Mets.

by phillyinportland on Aug 27, 2008 9:04 PM EDT reply actions

GREAT at-bat from Howard there.

He’s seen something like 22 pitches against Santana tonight. That’s an inning-plus…

by dajafi on Aug 27, 2008 9:07 PM EDT reply actions

AWESOME AB from Howard there.

by FuquaManuel on Aug 27, 2008 9:08 PM EDT reply actions

haha, funny how we all posted the same thing at the exact same time.

by FuquaManuel on Aug 27, 2008 9:09 PM EDT reply actions

Lotta high-stress pitches for Santana this inning.

by dajafi on Aug 27, 2008 9:10 PM EDT reply actions

Chance for Victorino to make up for that DP.

by phillyinportland on Aug 27, 2008 9:10 PM EDT reply actions

Werth

I feel someething good is about to happen.

by Steve-O- on Aug 27, 2008 9:11 PM EDT reply actions

It’s surprising given recent doings to see such good ABs from Pat and Howard, and less good ABs from Vic and Werth (who just swung at an awful pitch on 0-1).

by dajafi on Aug 27, 2008 9:12 PM EDT reply actions

Shane has been starting to concern me too.

by Steve-O- on Aug 27, 2008 9:14 PM EDT up reply actions

The good news is that we should probably get to see the Mets’ bullpen next inning.

by FuquaManuel on Aug 27, 2008 9:15 PM EDT reply actions

Yep. Santana has thrown around 106, and the Mets broadcasters don’t think Jerry Manuel will stretch him after he threw 121 in a recent start.

by dajafi on Aug 27, 2008 9:17 PM EDT reply actions

This sucks. The Phillies are going to put me in a home, and I am only in my late 20s. Then they are going to put me in a grave. Jesus. Nothing is ever easy.

by Cluttered_JML on Aug 27, 2008 9:17 PM EDT reply actions

I have to say, it’s not really easy to score on Santana…even when you put the first two men on.

by FuquaManuel on Aug 27, 2008 9:18 PM EDT up reply actions

But they are gonna put me in a home too. And I am only 20.

by FuquaManuel on Aug 27, 2008 9:19 PM EDT up reply actions

My father warned me that being a Phillies fan was like writing your own prescription for a stay in the sanitarium, but I had to become a nut like him too.

by Cluttered_JML on Aug 27, 2008 9:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Werth did have a homer against Santana, so I’m thinking he’s not doing that bad. Considering who they’re up against, getting three runs so far looks pretty good.

by phillyinportland on Aug 27, 2008 9:18 PM EDT reply actions

Good god, Eyre is murder to lefties…like Romero minus the walks.

by FuquaManuel on Aug 27, 2008 9:20 PM EDT reply actions

Man, got jobbed on that 0-2 call. C’mon Eyre…

by dajafi on Aug 27, 2008 9:22 PM EDT reply actions

Ryan Howard: Renaissance Man

by Cluttered_JML on Aug 27, 2008 9:25 PM EDT reply actions

It’s nice to be excited for a change about an inning with Coste and Rollins coming up.

by phillyinportland on Aug 27, 2008 9:26 PM EDT reply actions

I thought that was going to be a great matchup—Dobbs against a young power pitcher who sucks against lefties. He did hit it hard.

by dajafi on Aug 27, 2008 9:32 PM EDT reply actions

Who is pitching the 8th do you think?

by FuquaManuel on Aug 27, 2008 9:33 PM EDT reply actions

Castillo, Wright, Delgado due.

Start prayers now.

by dajafi on Aug 27, 2008 9:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Madson? I’m already praying.

by phillyinportland on Aug 27, 2008 9:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh god. I would almost rather throw Eyre out for another. He’s only at what, 18 pitches?

by FuquaManuel on Aug 27, 2008 9:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Seanez looks like the guy….GULP

by Cluttered_JML on Aug 27, 2008 9:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Nice to see Jimmy getting it going again. Though Hernandez points out that now, with 3-0 on Utley, they’ll finish the IBB and go after Pat.

by dajafi on Aug 27, 2008 9:36 PM EDT reply actions

Oh Pat, what I would do for a big hit here.

by FuquaManuel on Aug 27, 2008 9:37 PM EDT reply actions

I need to go back to Sam’s Club and get the super big tub of Tums

by Cluttered_JML on Aug 27, 2008 9:39 PM EDT reply actions

That’s weird… I thought I wrote “Seanez” in that post where I listed the Mets hitters due.

Anyway, as you can see, it’s Seanez.

by dajafi on Aug 27, 2008 9:43 PM EDT reply actions

Two down…only Charles the Skinny remains.

by Cluttered_JML on Aug 27, 2008 9:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Two quick outs for His Rudeness.

But Delgado’s career numbers against him are friggin’ scary: 3-6, two jacks.

Lidge coming in? Nope. Hernandez bitterly denouncing the move.

by dajafi on Aug 27, 2008 9:45 PM EDT reply actions

I just saw that and my first thought was the same. Gonna keep prayin’.

by phillyinportland on Aug 27, 2008 9:47 PM EDT up reply actions

I knew that was gonna happen.

by FuquaManuel on Aug 27, 2008 9:47 PM EDT reply actions

Motherfreaking hell.

Stupid, stupid, stupid.

by dajafi on Aug 27, 2008 9:47 PM EDT reply actions

Might have thought about Romero there if he was available.

by phillyinportland on Aug 27, 2008 9:48 PM EDT reply actions

Why is this happening? Another extra innings game is not an option.

by FuquaManuel on Aug 27, 2008 9:49 PM EDT reply actions

NOW you put him in. Cholly can really manage an offense, but sometimes I think he is a step behind the curve with the pitching staff.

by FuquaManuel on Aug 27, 2008 9:50 PM EDT reply actions

Is this the first time Lidge has come in in the 8th inning this year?

by phillyinportland on Aug 27, 2008 9:52 PM EDT reply actions

Yes. And it might be the first time with a guy on base.

by dajafi on Aug 27, 2008 9:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Talk about putting your players in a position to fail. This is awful. Really awful.

by FuquaManuel on Aug 27, 2008 9:55 PM EDT reply actions

I don’t belierve what I’m seeing…shoot me.

by Steve-O- on Aug 27, 2008 9:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Good night….unreal this is.

by Cluttered_JML on Aug 27, 2008 9:57 PM EDT reply actions

The expression “screwed the pooch” is thrown around a lot these days.

But he basically f*cked that dog to death, then kept thrusting.

by dajafi on Aug 27, 2008 9:58 PM EDT reply actions

Ok, that should just about do it. I am pretty sure that if Cholly had put in Lidge to face Delgado this would be a completely different ballgame. But alas, Cholly follows a brilliant coaching night with one that was chock full of blunders…learn to manage the pitching staff you must young (old) jedi.

by FuquaManuel on Aug 27, 2008 9:59 PM EDT reply actions

Still, all that said…our bullpen was bound the fuck up at some point…

by FuquaManuel on Aug 27, 2008 10:02 PM EDT reply actions

Now the Mets are throwing the leather at us.

I know that in a rational world, given these pitching matchups, the split is okay. We’re still tied in the loss column. But tonight could have been a kick in the face to this team, and the Phils couldn’t close the deal.

They had big opportunities in the 6th and 7th and couldn’t add on runs—like the Mets last night. And Manuel just totally mismanaged the 8th. At the least he needs to do an Andy Reid type “This loss is on me” admission.

by dajafi on Aug 27, 2008 10:06 PM EDT reply actions

Kind of unexpected that the Mets got Santana off the hook for this one. Manuel must have really wanted this game to use Lidge like he did – and I doubt we’ll see that happen again. I see we’re getting rookie Andrew Carpenter now. Could be worth checking to see what he can add to the bullpen.

by phillyinportland on Aug 27, 2008 10:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Two batters too late. I hope the lesson taken isn’t that he should never use Lidge in the 8th, but that if you do, bring him in with the bases clear.

by dajafi on Aug 27, 2008 10:13 PM EDT up reply actions

No, if Cholly really wanted to win he would have used Lidge against Delgado, being aware that Seanez is Delgado’s bitch.

by FuquaManuel on Aug 27, 2008 10:14 PM EDT up reply actions

I still think that if you are in the business of measuring moral victories, which I usually am not, then last night’s win counts for more than this one. But you hate to see the Phillies give back some mojo after they had just seized a lot of it the night before.

Cubs series is still pivotal…we need to split at the very least because I don’t see the mets losing 2 of 3 to the Marlins.

by FuquaManuel on Aug 27, 2008 10:11 PM EDT reply actions

Ugh. There might be more depressing words than “Taguchi the final hope for the Phillies,” but I can’t think of any offhand.
