Do over? Gamethread 8-6-08
Florida Marlins @ Philadelphia Phillies
The Phils look for a mulligan on last night's game vs. Florida, and Kendrick seeks redemption after his last dreadful start against those same Marlins.
The Marlins enter the night just a game and a half behind the Phils.

Nice inning for what it was…a couple of hard hit balls. Let’s keep it up Phightins!

Always nice to get an early lead, even if it is just one run. Also, I can’t remember the last time Chase drove in a run in the first inning. Good start.

Sanchez getting himself into trouble here in the second—error on a comebacker, HBP. Of course now he’s got Bruntlett to, I’m sure, bail him out.

Phils getting all kinds of breaks in the 2nd—Kendrick hits a high chopper over the pitcher, scoring a run and getting Brunt to 3rd with one out. (HRam made the play at first.) 3-0.

With Shane and Chase I thought what the hell let’s get greedy. I can’t believe the stats Shane has after the break. Rule 5 Oh Yeah.

Kendrick got a serious call on that backward K to Willingham. Though Sarge seems to think it was a strike.

According to the replay it was high enough, but I couldn’t tell whether it was actually over the plate.

He’s over 80 pitches through 4, and all the putative long guys worked last night. They need one more out of him and then a lot of good bullpen work…

Kendrick is channeling his inner Moyer….I left for 4 minutes and I come back with the bases juiced and in time to watch J-Roll snow cone the ball….ugh.

This is where Kendrick can run into problems – going for that one extra inning after a good performance for 5 or 6 innings. At the first sign of trouble, as soon as someone reaches base, I’d take him out and let the bullpen finish it off – not that it’s likely to happen that way.

I couldn’t agree with you more. Seems like the 3rd time through the order, usually in the 6th Charlie wants just one more inning. I’d like to see him have a couple of RP ready.

Nice to see a quick inning but have noticed very few breaking balls and he’s probably thrown 3 sliders so maybe it’s an off night. Dunno.

There’s one: Bruntlett with a two-strike single, SB, to third on the error, scores on the first MLB hit for Cervanek through the drawn-in infield.

Wheeler joking about how they’re going to screw with Cervanek through a fake ball-which apparently is done all the time, but I’d never heard of it until last night reading John Feinstein’s book about Glavine/Mussina-when Glavine got his first win, someone on the Braves said he should give “the ball” to his mom. He was about to do just that until he looked at what had been written: “Mom, this is the ball from my first f—-ing win in the majors.”
(It wasn’t the real ball of course.)

Funny you mention that…my wife got me that book for my birthday (along with The Stark Truth and Rob Neyer’s Big Book Collection), so now I have a reason to read it. I already read the others…very good stuff.

Well that kinda sucks. 2nd and 3rd, no outs, Victorino, Utley, and Howard bat…0 runs. 7-0 would have been a shit load nicer than 5-0 against this team, in this ballpark.

Only takes one to a continue a streak which is why i find them silly….go goes 1-5 in 20 straight games he’s batting 200 for the last 20 games, BUT he has a 20 game hit streak :)

Durbin absolutely scalded that ball… he wuz robbed.
I’m hoping we don’t see Lidge tonight, but pretty sure we will.
Meanwhile, Gordon left his rehab appearance for Clearwater tonight after one batter. It doesn’t sound good:
Just received word here in the press box that veteran reliever Tom Gordon left his rehab appearance tonight in Florida with discomfort in his right elbow. It is apparently serious enough that the righthander will fly back to Philadelphia and see team doctor Micahel Ciccotti tomorrow. Gordon had been attempting to battle back from elbow inflammation.

Nah, you don’t want to strain the guy’s arm. He was fantastic.
It’s Madson. Hopefully they won’t need Durbin again till the weekend with Hamels tomorrow and-fingers crossed-no need for Lidge or Romero tonight.

Good work by Madson – that’s very encouraging, as I was beginning to worry he was gonna lose like he did a couple of years ago at the end of the season. You’re right about not overusing Durbin – I thought maybe Condrey could have come in there, but you can’t argue with success.
