Well, yeah.
Blanton looks good based on the two batters I’ve seen, so that’s something.
by dajafi on Aug 8, 2008 8:46 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I’m really happy with the way Blanton is going, but this is now 14 innings in a row that the phils have failed to score a run.
Blanton’s performance (and I realize the jinx of typing this) is essentially against a AAA team.
It benefited the Phils that the Pirates dumped Jason Bay.
by Bilzo on Aug 8, 2008 8:49 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Haha, at what point do opposing fans start referring to the Phils offense as AAA-level do you think?
by FuquaManuel on Aug 8, 2008 8:50 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
He has had a handful of called third strikes, and pretty good control, despite his higher pitch count
by Cluttered_JML on Aug 8, 2008 8:49 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Utley, Howard and Blanton 0-6.
Everybody else has been on base at least once. Bruntlett is 0-2, but he did line out to left.
In the first game against Maholm, the Phils had one hit I think, and only struck out once in the whole game. This game appears to be more of the same.

Please prove me wrong Chase….pretty please?

Phils 0-4 w/ RISP tonight. A hit in every inning, at least 1 LOB every inning. Maddening.
by Bilzo on Aug 8, 2008 8:58 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Terrible that I was thinking the same thing: “two guys on base, lefty on lefty, no shot he does something good.”
If you’d told me three months ago that anyone could lack faith in Chase, no way I would have believed it.
Now we have right-wing nutjob Jim Bunning in the booth. If Slim gets lit up this inning, that will be why.

wife is watching the opening ceremonies to the olympics (which are pretty impressive I’ll admit) so I’ve got the sound turned down on the broadcast. Would’ve liked to have heard Bunning. I hear he’s a bad congressman.

Blanton
ESPN Scoreboard has Blanton as one of its top three performers – for 6 IP, 1H, 0 Runs – and he’s not winning!
by phillyinportland on Aug 8, 2008 9:06 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
At least the Phillies have a bullpen and the Pirates don’t after Capps.
by christonabike on Aug 8, 2008 9:08 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
First time through the lineup against Maholm:
8 AB, 2H, 1K (Blanton), 1 BB
Second time:
9 AB, 2H, 3K, 0 BB
Third time (so far):
5 AB, 1 H, 4K, 1 BB
SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN TO ME HOW IT GETS HARDER TO HIT A PITCHER THE MORE TIMES YOU SEE HIM!
by Bilzo on Aug 8, 2008 9:09 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Cy Maholm is just eating them up….just like last time. You swear these guys don’t ever watch film of these pitchers.
by Cluttered_JML on Aug 8, 2008 9:09 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
That was quite possibly the worst inning out of many very bad innings that the Phils have had all season.
by FuquaManuel on Aug 8, 2008 9:10 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
could have been worse….could’ve started with a leadoff triple.

Here comes the manufactured run in the Phils 1-0 loss
by Cluttered_JML on Aug 8, 2008 9:13 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
It’ll be 2-0. Somebody goes yard this inning for the Pirates, and that’s it.

Juan Samuel
If he was in the lineup tonight he might have swung and missed at a few curveballs, but he’d probably have scored by now as well.
by Bilzo on Aug 8, 2008 9:13 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Blanton pissed after that walk to McLouth.
Seriously, at this point we’ve got some big bruisers on that pitching staff. Blanton, Myers and maybe Hamels should just start beating the crap out of the regulars.
by dajafi on Aug 8, 2008 9:13 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Hamels track to the majors was already delayed by breaking an appendage in a bar fight. I’d prefer he didn’t resort to fisticuffs.

97 pitches for Maholm. This has got to be his last inning. Unfortunately, he’s facing a slumping Coste, worthless Bruntlett, and then either Blanton or So Taguchi as the useless PH with 0 on and 2 out.
by Bilzo on Aug 8, 2008 9:19 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Watching Coste has been absolutely painful in the past few weeks.

Ok, months, but especially the past few weeks
by Cluttered_JML on Aug 8, 2008 9:25 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
on the other hand, the whole offense has really been absolutely painful the last few months.
by FuquaManuel on Aug 8, 2008 9:26 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, but at least I have hope, no matter how useless, when the top of the order comes up….spots 6-9, I just want to put a .45 in my mouth and pull the trigger
by Cluttered_JML on Aug 8, 2008 9:29 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Kind of like when he first came up. I honestly thought there was no way he would ever hit major-league pitching when he started out something like 0-for-10.
by phillyinportland on Aug 8, 2008 9:24 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
He may have been 0-10, but I don’t think he had any Ks so I was impressed.
by Bilzo on Aug 8, 2008 9:29 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I’d cut either Taguchi or Walrond and bring up Jaramillo right now. No way he could be any freaking worse than Coste or Ruiz.
by dajafi on Aug 8, 2008 9:25 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Jaramillo is hitting .260/.324/.377 in AAA. I’d say there’s a pretty significant chance he’s worse than Coste and a decent chance he’s worse than Ruiz.
by christonabike on Aug 8, 2008 9:29 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
So ain’t even so-so. He has been a wasted roster spot all year…but wait we got Eyre for the stretch run. What a joke. I guess with the 30 or so sell outs at the Bank the cheap ass owners are busy counting their pennies instead of getting a quality PH and cutting “Must Go So” loose.

Since the all-star break, this team’s greatest strength has been its starting pitching. The bullpen has been so-so, and everything’s being ruined by our terrible offense. When did we enter the bizarro universe?

Wendlestedt’s strike zone has been quite inconsistent tonight. He’s not biased towards a team, but it’s not very good. If I was a pitcher I’d be ticked off.
