Below the Limit: Marlins at Phillies, 9/10/08
Florida Marlins at Philadelphia Phillies, Sep 10, 2008 4:05 PM EDT
Not quite a "must-win," but it's definitely a "really, really, really, really, really important to win" game, and a fairly unusual 4:05 pm start. Expect shadows, sharp pitching, and very few runs (hey, I was right about Kendrick yesterday...).
Chuckles & Co. are going to lead heavily on Brett Myers today, who recently has been more than up to the task. Outside of CC Sabathia and Tim Lincecum, there's hardly been a better pitcher in the league over the last seven weeks. With the heavy bullpen use of Monday and Tuesday night, they're going to need at least 7 IP from Myers.
It's frustrating when you get 8 runs from this offense, with the way it's been scuffling, and you still lose. Oh well.

Myers with some nice escapism in the 1st.

Rollins saw one pitch and grounded it to first.
Werth struck out, but saw eight pitches.

Myers flat nasty in the 2nd. This despite every Marlin in the lineup coming into today’s game with a career average against him over .300.

I’m a big fan of September Ryan Howard.

It’s pretty unreal. He’s been a monster the last two weeks or so.

Two run homer for Luis Gonzalez. We’re losing.

So, if we lose tonight, and the Mets win, about how screwed are we on a scale of 1 to 10? 1 being not screwed at all and 10 being super screwed.

I’m on the verge of checking out. Not that I’ll probably stop watching, but it’s getting hard to stay positive.

Anyone know where to get the Phillies stats on getting a runner home from 3rd with less than 2 outs? The league average is usually around 60%, I feel like the Phillies are way worse.

Jimmy owes Werth a beer. Though Werth failed doing the same thing in the 3rd. And last night. And…

Nolasco and Myers have unbelievably similar lines through 6IP. Like, identical down to pitches thrown and everything:
Nolasco: 7H / 3ER / 1BB / 7K / 1HR / 97 Pitches (62 strikes)
Myers: 6H / 3ER / 1BB / 7K / 1HR / 97 Pitches (61 strikes)

And gave up a hit to each other. Unfortunately, Nolasco’s scored a run.

Let’s hope they start to differ more in the bottom of the 7th.

Excellent job by Myers. Ran into some trouble early, but settled down nicely and took care of business.

Looks like he will go out for one more.

This smacks of cholly leaving his starter in an inning too long.

I know there’s no manager in baseball that would put Lidge in right now, but to not do so is lunacy. How can so many organizations in baseball spend hundreds of millions (billions?) to win games and make decisions that are so obviously stupid?

I was thinking the same thing. A strikeout would have been useful there.
Effing Book.

Good play by the fan to let only one run score I guess?

Double just inside the line at third. Fan interference made it a ground-rule and probably saved a run. Then 5-4-3 DP.
So they’re down by a run.

Well, I guess that should do it right?
This one is on Cholly in my opinion. I don’t follow other teams as closely as I do the Phillies, but I am pretty sure there is no manager who does a worse job of determining when to take his starting pitchers out.

You’re going to believe what you’re going to believe no matter what. But the first two hits in that inning were routine ground balls that would have been outs were the defense positioned correctly. Then Durbin, that waste, gave up the winner.

With Milwaukee winning today, and the Mets heavy favorites to beat Odalis Perez, a loss today for the Phils would officially end any expectations that I have of this team making the playoffs.
To drop 2 out of 3 to the Nationals, and then do the same to the Fish, would be absolutely inexcusable under these circumstances.

Not just the game, but probably the season. You simply can’t drop 2 of 3 to bad teams and hope to make up ground in a pennant race.

This is a bummer. I don’t even have it in me to be mad anymore. I am just exhausted.

I’ve been working and just realized this game was already played. Can’t say I’m surprised after what happened last night. All I can hold out is the hope that somehow we see another 13-4 finish that would get us to 92-70. Assuming at least three wins vs. the Brewers, with four a near necessity, that would probably get us the wild card. The problem is, right now this team hasn’t shown that it has the capability of winning even four in a row. All we can do is hope – and remember that just before the last 17 games last year the team looked pretty bad in a couple of losses that seemed like they’d ended any chance of postseason play.
By the way, just think how frustrated/scared one has to be if you’re a fan of this year’s: Brewers, Cubs, Diamondbacks, White Sox, and maybe even the Rays.
