Capital Punishment: Phillies at Nationals, 9/2/08
Philadelphia Phillies at Washington Nationals, Sep 2, 2008 7:10 PM EDT
Ladies and gentlemen, your scorching hot Washington Nationals. And a great opportunity for me to work in that WACKY headline! Get it?! WOCKA WOCKA!
Cole Hamels looks to cool off a Nationals team that has now won seven in a row. He faces off against poor John Lannan, who got hollered at last year after breaking Chase Utley's hand, all of which constituted a "black eye" on the wittle guy's career, according to Don Sutton.
Of note is right fielder and son-of-a-MILF Jayson Werth, now batting third for your Fightin's.
Meanwhile, the two teams standing between the Phillies and the post-season -- the division leading Mets and the wild card leading Brewers -- are playing in Milwaukee.
Save us, Cole.

Nice to see Howard getting some doubles. It’s amazing how few extra base hits he has except for his HRs this year.

Crap. Victorino couldn’t get Howard in from third with two outs, and because the infield was in, Vic was out on the high hopper.
Something new – Ruiz grounds out to pitcher, not shortstop or third base. Maybe when Hamels or Moyer pitches they should bat eighth if Ruiz is catching.

Two lousy runs in six innings. Not that it’s all his fault, but when Burrell gets in a slump he really gets in a slump.

charlie better not bring in Ryan Madson in this game.
Madson implodes when following hamels. It’s like following an awesome pitcher with a mediocre pitcher who relies on the same pitches. It’s a recipe for disaster, and that’s what usually happens.
Curse you, Brewers. If you can’t win one game this week vs. the Mets you don’t deserve to make the playoffs for the first time since 1982.

please explain
frantzke didn’t tell what happened here…
It sounded as though Utley hit a GIDP, but Ruiz scored and it counted?
Did Ruiz cross the plate before Rollins got tagged?
Otherwise I wouldn’t think his run would count, as it’s a force play at first?
Stupid radio, stupid being in the Nats blackout area.
Help?!?
So, does Charlie go to the bullpen with this lead and let Cole pitch on Sunday after a relatively light workout tonight? Sounds like that might have been the scenario going into today’s game.

Can we leave Durbin out there for the ninth or does it have to be Lidge with a four-run lead?

Gulp – that’s my least favorite Lidge.

Not that I’m complaining. Shutouts always make a nice gift.
