Ladies and gentlemen, your scorching hot Washington Nationals.  And a great opportunity for me to work in that WACKY headline!  Get it?!  WOCKA WOCKA!

Cole Hamels looks to cool off a Nationals team that has now won seven in a row.  He faces off against poor John Lannan, who got hollered at last year after breaking Chase Utley's hand, all of which constituted a "black eye" on the wittle guy's career, according to Don Sutton.

Of note is right fielder and son-of-a-MILF Jayson Werth, now batting third for your Fightin's.

Meanwhile, the two teams standing between the Phillies and the post-season -- the division leading Mets and the wild card leading Brewers -- are playing in Milwaukee.

Save us, Cole.

Cole into some trouble in the 2nd here. Losing a series to the Nats at this point would be a VERY bad thing.

First thing I saw was Shane’s great catch and DP.

Second was the umps strapping it on for us again with a foul/fair call.

But Cole got out it. Scoreless thru 2.

and there goes my scoresheet as I ruled that a 5-3.
I’d already accidentally moved Flores to 3rd, before he got doubled off.
If Scott Frantzke says “chopped” one more time, I’m going to come through the internet and strangle him.

by Bilzo on Sep 2, 2008 7:37 PM EDT reply actions

damnit…“ruiz chops it to short”….
how can I get in touch with this guy?

by Bilzo on Sep 2, 2008 7:41 PM EDT reply actions

Fantastic hitting from Rollins and Utley there, and two quick runs for the Phils.

I had the same thought when Ruiz was up, btw. He should never, ever play against lefties. The numbers are abominable. Lucky he didn’t hit it hard enough to do The Usual.

by dajafi on Sep 2, 2008 7:47 PM EDT reply actions

and the radio guys failed to tell me that rollins went to second on the throw home.
frantzke is horrible.

by Bilzo on Sep 2, 2008 7:47 PM EDT reply actions

uhh…I think you gotta score there if you go.
Bad play by Utley with Howard up.
stupid stupid stupid
(of course howard was gonna whiff – but that would’ve taken 2 more pitches at least)

by Bilzo on Sep 2, 2008 7:51 PM EDT reply actions

Let’s hope, one, that Flores is okay—though that looks unlikely—and two, that Hamels isn’t thrown off by the long wait.

by dajafi on Sep 2, 2008 7:55 PM EDT reply actions

heeh- Victor Martinez finally hit a home run for the tribe today.
That was my best 3rd round draft pick ever in my fantasy league.

by Bilzo on Sep 2, 2008 8:04 PM EDT reply actions

Nice to see Howard getting some doubles. It’s amazing how few extra base hits he has except for his HRs this year.

by phillyinportland on Sep 2, 2008 8:10 PM EDT reply actions

Crap. Victorino couldn’t get Howard in from third with two outs, and because the infield was in, Vic was out on the high hopper.

by dajafi on Sep 2, 2008 8:10 PM EDT reply actions

Um, one out. There are now two outs.

by dajafi on Sep 2, 2008 8:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Something new – Ruiz grounds out to pitcher, not shortstop or third base. Maybe when Hamels or Moyer pitches they should bat eighth if Ruiz is catching.

by phillyinportland on Sep 2, 2008 8:23 PM EDT reply actions

don’t we have this guy named Lou Marson or Jorge Jaramillo?

I think Ruiz is Hamels assigned catcher…

by Bilzo on Sep 2, 2008 8:37 PM EDT reply actions

Like McCarver for Carlton?

by phillyinportland on Sep 2, 2008 8:38 PM EDT reply actions

Sounds like an ankle sprain for Flores. Maybe I shouldn’t have insta-cut him from a fantasy team.

by dajafi on Sep 2, 2008 8:38 PM EDT reply actions

Phils squandering opportunities in the middle innings.

by dajafi on Sep 2, 2008 8:43 PM EDT reply actions

Two lousy runs in six innings. Not that it’s all his fault, but when Burrell gets in a slump he really gets in a slump.

by phillyinportland on Sep 2, 2008 8:45 PM EDT up reply actions

yes he do…his numbers always seem to find a way to level off to about .250/.375/.525 more or less.

by FuquaManuel on Sep 2, 2008 8:49 PM EDT up reply actions

charlie better not bring in Ryan Madson in this game.
Madson implodes when following hamels. It’s like following an awesome pitcher with a mediocre pitcher who relies on the same pitches. It’s a recipe for disaster, and that’s what usually happens.

by Bilzo on Sep 2, 2008 8:50 PM EDT reply actions

Wow—that’s a great point. I hadn’t thought of it that way.

Meanwhile, though Ruiz sucks, he does have a knack for fouling off pitches it would seem impossible even to make contact with. Granted, you’d rather he just not swing. But that’s something.

Oh, and he singles to center as I’m typing that.

by dajafi on Sep 2, 2008 8:57 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm shocked

Frantzke said “he grounds to third”…..maybe he’s following this thread.

by Bilzo on Sep 2, 2008 8:51 PM EDT reply actions

beltran 3-run homer. that whole f-in team is on fire.

by Bilzo on Sep 2, 2008 8:56 PM EDT reply actions

Curse you, Brewers. If you can’t win one game this week vs. the Mets you don’t deserve to make the playoffs for the first time since 1982.

by phillyinportland on Sep 2, 2008 8:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Cholly tried the hit and run with 1st/2nd, no outs and Cole up—almost a great call. As it was, Zimmerman made a nice play and got the out at first, so it still worked as a sacrifice.

by dajafi on Sep 2, 2008 9:01 PM EDT reply actions

Phils add another run on a slow-developing double play that allowed Ruiz to score.

by dajafi on Sep 2, 2008 9:05 PM EDT reply actions

please explain

frantzke didn’t tell what happened here…
It sounded as though Utley hit a GIDP, but Ruiz scored and it counted?
Did Ruiz cross the plate before Rollins got tagged?
Otherwise I wouldn’t think his run would count, as it’s a force play at first?
Stupid radio, stupid being in the Nats blackout area.

Help?!?

by Bilzo on Sep 2, 2008 9:05 PM EDT reply actions

First and third, ball hit to the 2b. Jimmy froze in the baseline, and the 2b threw to first for the out on Utley. Rollins then got himself caught in a rundown while Ruiz came home. So the run counted, but the inning ended.

by dajafi on Sep 2, 2008 9:07 PM EDT up reply actions

thank you dajafi.
Frantzke doesn’t tell anything, Larry has become a bit of a codger lately.

by Bilzo on Sep 2, 2008 9:09 PM EDT reply actions

So, does Charlie go to the bullpen with this lead and let Cole pitch on Sunday after a relatively light workout tonight? Sounds like that might have been the scenario going into today’s game.

by phillyinportland on Sep 2, 2008 9:12 PM EDT reply actions

I think you keep Cole in as long as he’s under 110 pitches. he hasn’t shown any fatigue so far when pitching after a long outing on normal rest.

by Bilzo on Sep 2, 2008 9:15 PM EDT reply actions

Cole done after surrendering a walk and single with one out in the 8th. Around 105 pitches I think. Romero coming in.

by dajafi on Sep 2, 2008 9:25 PM EDT reply actions

announcers also failed to tell me bruntlett was in left…

by Bilzo on Sep 2, 2008 9:28 PM EDT reply actions

okay….he is reading this thread….he just mentioned it, and admitted he failed to say it at the start of the inning.

by Bilzo on Sep 2, 2008 9:29 PM EDT reply actions

J.C. – the adventure continues!

by phillyinportland on Sep 2, 2008 9:32 PM EDT reply actions

Charlie’s managed a really good game tonight.

by dajafi on Sep 2, 2008 9:36 PM EDT reply actions

still not a fan of taking burrell out.
I wouldn’t have been upset if he’d taken Hamels out before the 8th, but not so bad to try and get one inning more. it all worked out.

by Bilzo on Sep 2, 2008 9:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Can we leave Durbin out there for the ninth or does it have to be Lidge with a four-run lead?

by phillyinportland on Sep 2, 2008 9:39 PM EDT reply actions

Not only is it Lidge, it’s Non-Save-Situation Lidge.

by dajafi on Sep 2, 2008 9:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Gulp – that’s my least favorite Lidge.

by phillyinportland on Sep 2, 2008 9:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Somebody must have tricked him after that leadoff triple: 1-3, backwards K, 4-3, game over, shutout.

by dajafi on Sep 2, 2008 9:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Not that I’m complaining. Shutouts always make a nice gift.
