Hammin' it Up Part II: Braves at Phillies, 9/23/08
Atlanta Braves at Philadelphia Phillies, Sep 23, 2008 7:05 PM EDT
Last night was terrific, but there's still an awful lot that can happen. So just chill and watch some meaningful September baseball.
Cole Hamels and Mike Hampton face off in a rematch of last week's battle in Atlanta. Despite obvious signs of fatigue, Hamels gutted through 6 2/3 innings and managed to get the victory.
Let's go for a blowout and give the key pitchers a rest.

Looked good getting the last two out. Although the walk made me a bit queasy. Just trying to remind myself that he can still pitch after way over 200 innings.

Cubs Lineup
absent: ramirez, soto, theriot…
so much for keeping the heat on…..

Some of that might have been bad numbers against Santana, I guess. Even if not, can’t take too much of an issue with Lou giving some of his guys a night off after clinching everything there is to clinch.
(Just so long as everyone plays tomorrow, of course.)

while its still eary in both games….if both the phils and the mets lose, that’s still a good thing. as it reduces the games by one, and the phils don’t lose ground.
Hamels so far….45 pitches, 4 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 1 ER. That’s a typical 4th inning line for him, not 2nd inning.

Thank you, Pedro Feliz, for another clutch hit.
By the way, not that it’s relevant, but did anyone else think it interesting that Clay Condrey got his first hold of the season on Sunday. 156 games in and he has one hold (and one save). Better late than never, I always say.

the cubs have four hits in 3 innings against Santana.
All four hits are doubles.

Cole throws away a run—had Johnson easily thrown out at third, threw it away, run scores.

ACK
dang it burrell.
Can’t you get more than one clutch hit per series? :)

Hamels after 4
71 pitches 6 H (2 IF), 2 R, 1 ER, 5K, 1 BB.
That inning helped his pitch count out.
I’ve always tinkered with the notion that if the pitcher committed the error, the runs should be earned….
by Bilzo on Sep 23, 2008 8:19 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Santana has only thrown 70 pitches thru 5…

Mets tied it up…
Hamels since his error:
7 batters faced, 0 H, 0 BB, 4 K.

Well put. Jayson Stark had some astounding numbers about how poorly the Mets have done after leading through 6 or 8 innings. Not sure if I have the exact figure, but it was something like: Mets would be 11 games better than Phillies if games ended after 6 innings, and 8 games ahead if games ended after 8 innings. Instead the Mets trail by 2 and a half.

I read this article and commented about it on BBTF.
Somebody wiser than me pointed out that Lidge doesn’t pitch except in the 9th. (translation: if the phils only had to lead after 6, they’d use the bullpen differently, so that’s somewhat of an irrelevant stat)

Thank god baseball games are 9 innings long.

Werth’s tailspin continues. He and Burrell must be drinking out of the same watering hole.

Does Burrell get a bit of a reprieve for last night’s 3 run blast?

i’m still torn there. I’d like to see the mets miss out, but it’s more important that the phils get to the playoffs i guess before spite should take over.

Victorino @ 1b is about the same as burrell, so it ain’t all bad, unless happy pete goes GIDP.

Revising an earlier item
Jonk, it appears as if Burrell has steered clear of the poisonous watering hole for the past few days.

welll i guess we’ve run right out of this inning.

Cole’s last inning here too, provided he lasts it.

3 innings to score 2…assuming the bullpen keeps it in reach, that doesn’t seem like too much to ask for.

Hamels only gave up one unearned run and it was on his own error. Still, 3ER over 7IP doesn’t deserve criticism.

i feel like all the batters are trying to jack one.
I don’t think that’s a good approach.
by Bilzo on Sep 23, 2008 9:32 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Santana threw 125 pitches thru 8. Presumably he’s done.
I think that’s a career high.
by dajafi on Sep 23, 2008 9:32 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
if they don’t score here, we’re trusting the comeback to some very bad hitters.

That’s why that inning was so critical. They are definitely pressing tonight. This is the kind of game they would have played in June or July.

Problem is that Gonzalez is a lefty, and all our good PH options are lefties.
by dajafi on Sep 23, 2008 9:39 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
if the phils blow this….they’ll have no one to blame but themselves. Hamels boneheaded throw. Burrell’s baserunning gaffe.
Victorino-Feliz-Ruiz. I don’t like the chances.
Cubs need to put 4 on the board in one inning against the mets. If aramis ramirez and soto don’t get ABs, ill be pissed.

Sometimes you just play shitty. If they have a repeat performance tomorrow, though, I will be officially worried.
