Tropic Thunder: Phillies at Mets, 9/5/08
Philadelphia Phillies at New York Mets, Sep 5, 2008 7:10 PM EDT
Do or die? Almost certainly. After squandering an opportunity to stay close to the first place Mets by losing 2 of 3 to a ha-ha bad Washington Nationals team this week, the Phillies head into Shea for the Last Time Ever (barring an unlikely playoff arrangement) for a three game series, down by exactly three games. The series is likely to be abbreviated or somewhat jumbled, however, due to Tropical Storm Hanna, currently expected to soak the mid-Atlantic region all day and night on Saturday.
The Phillies are in a situation where they pretty much must win at least 2 of 3. A sweep would be lovely. Losing 2 or getting swept, and it's more or less time to hope C.C. Sabathia and/or Prince Fielder choke on the post-game buffet in Milwaukee, and the rest of their teammates break their arms trying to perform the Heimlich.
It'll be Brett Myers versus Mike Pelfrey. Both pitchers are doing quite well recently. With the state of the Phils' bullpen lately, we'd better hope Myers has about 8 innings in his arm tonight.

Just wondering, if there is a rainout tomorrow do you think they would re-schedule it or put it in the category of “play at the end of the season if needed.” That could be a big game to have looming if they don’t get it in Saturday. A day-night doubleheader on Sunday would be possible, but after that it looks like there’s just one common off day, Monday the 15th, a travel day for both clubs coming after home games.

Monumental effort from Myers tonight.
And yeah, Dobbs was due. Whatever extra mouthful of cereal he might have had this morning was the difference on that one…
WholeCamels asked for eight strong innings, and I doubt anyone could have hoped for more.

The GameCast pitch tracker showed all six pitches to Howard as outside and low – swung at four, took two. When pitchers can control their pitches like that it’s no wonder Howard’s hitting below .250, because he apparently can’t lay off the pitches outside the strike zone.

An out for a run. That’s fair. One more.

what happened to let Delgado get to 2nd? Gamecast says fielder’s indifference??? I think they mean interference… someone wanna help me out
Man, was that a scary scoreless inning. The last two outs especially: Bruntlett—WHO SHOULD NOT BE IN THE GAME WHEN GOLSON’S AVAILABLE!!!1—nearly dropped Beltran’s popup, and Church hit a bomb that Shane just managed to run down.
Tough to overstate the importance of this win.
So the Mets didn’t score? My report had Beltran htting a sacrifice fly before Delgado took second on fielder’s indifference.

Yeah, the Phillies site on MLB has it 3-0. I guess somebody jumped the gun putting in the run scoring on a shallow fly ball or something like that. Shutouts are always nice and Lidge managed to get through the inning unscored on, which might put a little more doubt in the Mets’ minds later this weekend.

Just for fun, GameCast put the runner back on third and posts the final as 3-0!
