Miami Blues: Marlins at Phillies, 9/9/08
Miami Marlins at Philadelphia Phillies, Sep 9, 2008 7:05 PM EDT
After what can only be described as a frustrating win (shoulda been a blowout, but they taxed the bullpen and barely held on at the end), the Phillies send the struggling Kyle Kendrick to the mound to face the talented Chris Volstad.
Nonetheless, the Phillies enter the game 1 1/2 games behind the Mets (2 in the loss column) in the NL East, and 3 games behind Milwaukee for the Wild Card, with a four-game series in Philadelphia looming later this week.
Rollins, Howard, and Werth, with some help from the strangely enigmatic Chase Utley, have been running this offense for the past couple of weeks. Imagine how it'd feel if everyone clicked at once. They might need an onslaught of runs; I can't see Kendrick pitching a gem tonight.

at this point I might be ready to have Eaton take his spot in the rotation. I’d rather Happ, but they won’t let him start for some reason.
I won’t go so far as want Eaton but by God it’s time for ‘KK the Klown’ to take a seat. He flat out sucks.
Oh and after 2 sucky games
2 weeks apart he said "I just have to throw the ball and stop trying to pin point my pitches’ or words to that effect. Well KK throw the effin ball then.
I was about to say “This is painful” before the homer. Now, it’s just numbingly crazy. I guess they didn’t have Plan B ready after the terrible first inning.

Hopefully Carrasco is able to win a rotation spot next spring. Like I said last night, pitchers that don’t strike anyone out, with poor command, and the inability to induce groundballs are not the model for success in the major leagues.
Assuming they re-sign Moyer, I like the top four of Hamels/Myers/Moyer/Blanton. Let Happ and Carrasco battle for the last spot.
(If they don’t re-sign Moyer, maybe they’ll go get Derek Lowe.)
Kendrick is cooked. We always knew his lack of good stuff would catch up with him; I’m mostly just pissed that this happened before a canny GM could deal him away. But that probably never would have happened anyway with the Phils, who always look on the illusory bright side of life.
As Bilzo said above, I honestly feel sorry for Kendrick. He seems like a good kid, and he knew he hadn’t been starting because he’d been struggling lately.
With that said, I blame Dubee and Manuel. It is absolutely inexcusable — I repeat, absolutely inexcusable — to put yourselves in this kind of a position in the midst of a nip-and-tuck pennant race. If Kendrick were going to start, it should have been against the Brewers, a predominantly RH team. Honestly, sticking him in the bullpen entirely was the better option all along.
In the long view, I can’t fault the Phils for trying to teach Kendrick a change up and make him an effective starter. His groundball tendencies were very good, and he should — in all fairness — be in Triple-A right now if he were following a normal development curve. That being said, I don’t think the Phils necessarily hesitated to deal him — he was rumored to be part of the Bedard offer last December.
Just thinking here fellas
Maybe the plan was once seen that KK was getting his ass handed to him again just accept the loss, let him be humiliated and lose what little confidence he has left and now Charlie/Dubee have a very good reason for both fans and team to replace him the rest of the way.
Ouch – I can’t see anyone with the team wanting to see Kendrick get humiliated. You can make the case to trade him or replace him in the rotation without going to this extreme.

Well tomorrows a new day
Might as well do some fall clean up work in the yard, it’s gotta be more pleasurable than this ass whipping. Nats and Mess tied at 5 in the 4th. Go Nats !!!
in all fairness, while it would be nice to win every game the rest of the year, that’s not realistic. If the Phils win tomorrow, this won’t be as painful.
I don't feel sorry for KK at all...
I don’t care if you’re an A pitcher or in the show, you have to be able to throw strikes when it counts…and Mets just tied it at 7 in the 4th.
Phillies should have sent Stairs there. If they’ve got even a 50/50 shot of scoring there, they should take it.

after stairs singled…is there a good reason they didn’t PR Greg Golson?
Guy at 1st, 0 outs.
Seriously?
That definitely would have been a smart move.

Lindstrom. He’s not very good, just like the rest of the Marlins bullpen.

What is it about the Houston Astros that I hate. Why does it seem like every year they should be dead and buried and there they are in September winning games. I just looked at their schedule compared to the Brewers and the Cardinals and it’s way easier – one series vs. Chicago and one vs. Florida and the rest against Pitt/Cin/Atl.

that year the they 6-0’d the phils and took our WC spot.
Wagner and David Bell gave them runs.
Hated them ever since.
Felt good to rob them of Lidge for Bourn and Geary.
Me too, although I see Geary’s in the game tonight and his numbers this year are actually pretty good – 2.48 ERA and WHIP of 1.16. But I much prefer having Lidge.
