BREAKING: Phillies sign OF Jayson Werth to Multiyear Deal
UPDATE: So it's 2 years, $10MM... $3MM in 2009, and $7MM in 2010.
Good news, on the whole, depending on the terms, of course.

I’ll wait for something a little firmer than “one source,” but if true it looks like a pretty good deal. I like the shorter years/longer dollars approach, usually.

I think they have it at two years, $10 million, the breakdown being $3m this year and $7m for 2010.
Fairly close to what I predicted back here. Werth might have dug in on the question of an option year for 2011, thinking (correctly) that if he can come close to his 2008 performance in the two years of the deal, he’ll really clean up when he hits the market at age 32. Or maybe the Phils weren’t interested in building in a contingency to extend the relationship.
Either way, I’m very happy with this.

The phillies have always been good at this though haven’t they? The arbitration players – and amaro supposedly was the key mover in this – so i’m not too impressed if amaro is doing well in what he’s always done well in.
He still crapped the bed on Ibanez and still waiting to see that starting pitcher thing – and while giving away draft picks i’m curios to see how they’ll do without arbuckle.
This I guess can bring him up to a C for the off season – but showing the strength in what he’s shown strength in in the past doesn’t impress me as much as the new things he’s handling…those are the things that will show us where he’s going as a GM in my opinion

I think this is about right. At the moment, his strengths are in focus. Earlier in the winter, his shortcomings were. It’s probably fair* to say that he could improve in things like gauging the market as he gains experience in the job, and his two little trades thus far were both okay to good.
*not that I’ve been much interested in being fair to Amaro, but still.

I don’t think we’ll see if arbitration is a strong suit until he deals with Howard. I was very disappointed not only with the result, but also the process used last year to combat Howard’s arb case, and want to see Amaro improve upon that. The 1 year deals and Madson/Werth/Hamels deals are really nice, but handling Howard is the big test.

He’s been the assistant GM how long? You’d hope he’d learned how to gauge the market already – which is why the ibanez contract just royally sucks – it means he’s not as ready as he should be after all those years ‘backing guys up’ which to me is just bad

Thinking about the 3/7 split for the two years. I wonder if that came from Werth rather than the Phils. Let’s say the Phils offered him 5/5 and Werth performed ok the next two years and then he can be offered arb or free agency. So, Werth, instead of having a 5mil number next to his name entering free agency now has a 7mil number, which either makes it less likethe Phils offer arb so he can become a free agent or if they do offer arb, he makes even more money.
For Who? My teammates.
For What? To Win.
How Much? Where do I sign?
