2B Marcus Giles signs minor league deal with Phillies
$600,000 minor league contract, sez the Denver Post.
Insurance for a long Chase Utley layoff, it seems.
Jason Donald must need some yellow discipline.

Not a stop-the-presses move, but maybe worth a try as Utley insurance.
Giles looked to be on track for stardom with three very good years for the Braves from 2003-2005. But his numbers fell sharply the following season, and Atlanta non-tendered him in a surprise move. He went west to join his brother Brian in San Diego for the 2007 campaign, but had an awful year and lost his job by season’s end. After losing out for the Rockies’ second-base job last spring, Giles nearly signed with the Dodgers but ultimately decided to sit out the season. He’ll be 31 in May, and has career averages of .277/.353/.429.
In other words, this is probably Ruben Amaro’s best move to date.

I just hope this isn’t a precursor to some Donald-for-LH Reliever trade.

… and that sentence made me cry just a little
But T.O. and his sideline histrionics wear on a quarterback. He's like the hot stripper you tried to clean up and convert into a real girlfriend. It's a lot of fun until the moment she has her second drink while out to eat with your parents. You unravel quicker than she does.

Ever linked with PEDs?
Has Giles ever been linked with PEDs? His drop-off was so drastic after 2005 that I’ve always had suspicions that he had to stop doing whatever he was doing because of increased testing and now he just can’t perform without whatever it was he was taking. Of course, this is all just speculation from his rapid decline, but I’ve always wondered with him.

Although there have never been any formal allegqaions against him his name is usually mentioned when talking about possible players who took PED’s.
I’m not too high on the move since I’ve been reading some old articles from his time with the Padres and he seemed to be a bit of a whiner. Oh well heres to hoping that Donald will also be given a chance.

i sell insurance for a living...
and if i was a baseball insurance salesman instead of an Allstate Agent… I would’ve sold Giles to the phillies the day after Utley’s announced surgery… Good thing the Phillies held out a bit for a lower premium but, either way you look at this move, it’s good. even if he turns out to be crap, it cost you essentially nothing! best case, he rebounds and is a great bench player.
