Zombie Baseball: Astros at Phillies Game Thread, October 1, 2009
Houston Astros at Philadelphia Phillies, Oct 1, 2009 7:05 PM EDT
Sure, that team on the field tonight in the white uniforms with red pinnies will look like the Phillies, but they won't be the Phillies. They'll be bench guys for the most part, and the regulars who take the field will probably be too hungover and exhausted to know their own names.
Cliff Lee makes his final tune-up before what appears to be a Game 1 NLDS start. He'll be opposed by Felipe Paulino.

I figured Cairo would in there, and maybe even Stairs. For Ibanez, he seems is on the end of a slump so maybe Charlie is wary of switching things up for him, and Werth is in a slump so it makes sense to keep him in

Forgot to mention, Andy Tracy is a 1st Base man, and Howard hasnt really had a night off? Maybe they just dont need it that much, which isnt all that far fetched.

Also, if anyone cares or hasnt heard, the Rockies clinched so the NL PLayoff teams are all set now.
by Whack8888 on Oct 1, 2009 7:10 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
true
but i’d prefer to start against the rockies over the other two teams.
by Bilzo on Oct 1, 2009 7:12 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think we set up alright against the Cardinals as well, in spite of Carpetner and Wainwright. I am not really worried about the Dodgers, but for some reason I would feel more comfortable playing the Cardinals

Bako
2nd CI in a week. I thought he was a ‘good defensive catcher’?
by Bilzo on Oct 1, 2009 7:14 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
yeah that is weird, if I remember right he has two pretty awesome plate blocking plays though recently
by Whack8888 on Oct 1, 2009 7:15 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Erm, no. He stinks on ice. Have you seen him throw a runner out?
by dajafi on Oct 1, 2009 7:15 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
He’s thrown out 6 of 21 (28.6%)
Ruiz has thrown out 23 out of 82 (28.1%)
Kinda surprising. I thought Ruiz would be ahead.

Yeah, he’s had his share of clunkers since the blazing start.
And he is yet another Phillies pitcher who seemingly can’t retire the Astros 2-5 hitters.
by FuquaManuel on Oct 1, 2009 7:16 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
yeah I wonder what is going on with him
by Whack8888 on Oct 1, 2009 7:17 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Fatigue. He’s racked up like 1000 innings. Or the NL could be catching up to him.
by FuquaManuel on Oct 1, 2009 7:19 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Could just be bad luck as well. I dont remember that well, but I think I watched one game where he gave up 5 runs and it was lots of bloops etc as well as good hits but on good pitches.
by Whack8888 on Oct 1, 2009 7:22 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
It’s definitely concerning. It looks like he’s lined up to be our Game 1 starter, and he hasn’t had back-to-back good starts since August.
by PhillyFriar on Oct 1, 2009 7:21 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
So as long as he pitches crappy tonight, we’re in good shape!
by taco pal on Oct 1, 2009 7:23 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Benny!!
It’s about time Bourn missed a ball.
I get playing the backups a bit…..but wtf with Bruntlett batting 2nd?
by Bilzo on Oct 1, 2009 7:22 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I thought more back up guys would be in tonight if for no other reason to let the regulars heal some of the bruises, scrapes etc. Then I thought Charlie probably had to keep some regs in to hopefully give Lee some run support. I am worried about him being our number 1…I just dunno.
by Steve-O- on Oct 1, 2009 7:41 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
announcers said Howard is in a fight with Cecil for the RBI crown for the NL for the year. If that’s the case, I’m fine with him playing. I don’t think he looks tired, nor does he play an exhausting position. leave him in there to take his hacks.

Re: the debate above over whether we’d like to play the Cards, Rockies or Dodgers…. we don’t get to decide. We play the Rockies regardless of our record (assuming the Card’s don’t catch us +1 game)
by Steve J on Oct 1, 2009 7:44 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
If Phils win tonight, they’re tied with LAD for best record in NL. Cards would be 2 behind. Also, LAD hosts COL last series so let’s hope Rockies win series 2-1…Cards host Brewers

Paulino pitches around Bako, to get to Lee. We’ll see.
by Ritty77 on Oct 1, 2009 7:47 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, if you can get Lee out, you can get Bako out, and lead off with the pitcher.

CHoP
Radio crew said he ‘felt something’ in his rehab start today and flew back to Philly to see staff Dr Cicotti.
Watching Bos vs Cle on MLBN. Jason Bay went into a homer trot on a ball that glanced off the Green Monster and got nailed at second (easily). Carrasco pitching for CLE, down 3-0 in 3rd.

Bruntlett batting 2nd?
Hey, I understand giving Chase Utley a rest, and giving Bruntlett a little playing time…but batting second? Doesn’t Cliff Lee have a better batting average?
by JWoody on Oct 1, 2009 8:08 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, that’s going to cost us this game. Oh well—if it gets Bruntlett off the playoff roster, that’s a great trade… though it likely won’t.
by dajafi on Oct 1, 2009 8:13 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Regarding that, who is likely to be left off? How many are allowed?
by Ritty77 on Oct 1, 2009 8:19 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
i think you get 24 just like the regular season. If someone get’s DL’ed mid-series, I think they can be replaced, AND you can reset your roster every new series.
by Bilzo on Oct 1, 2009 8:20 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
25, actually. One too many since Beardo will be the 25th.
by dpb132 on Oct 1, 2009 9:56 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
just struck out for the 3rd time...
Beardo 0-5, with 3 strikeouts.
However, applying the power of positive thinking…at least he made contact and got the ball out of the infield twice.

So far this game has played out true to form.

Tough to score runs when 3 of your 4 hits are all by the same guy!

by Bilzo on Oct 1, 2009 8:35 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
rollins couldn’t score from 2nd on a 2 out single? musta been cheap!
by Bilzo on Oct 1, 2009 8:41 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
It was an infield single to short—Raul just barely beat the tag.

I kind of don’t mind that Condrey hit a guy, but wish is had been someone who’s really killing us.

I really want to hit Pence, but it’s personal. He’s on my shit list.

Pence GIDP
Even better than hitting him to my way of thinking.
by JWoody on Oct 1, 2009 9:25 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
would you prefer to:
1) face guy who’s three for three on the night, slugging 1.667 or
2) face beardo.
You can get with this or you can get with that. I think you’ll go with Beardo, cause Beardo’s really crap.
by Bilzo on Oct 1, 2009 9:14 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah...exactly
the choice…
- pitch to the guy who is 3 for 3
- pitch to the guy who is now batting 0.160
kind-of a no-brainer.
What was Charlie Brown’s batting average in Peanuts?
by JWoody on Oct 1, 2009 9:18 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
ok…..i’ve been half heartedly paying attention to this, but now I see Bourn reaches on single and goes to second on WP. Good night phils. Thanks for last night.

Don't think the Phils are winning this one. Oh well.

Charlie mentioning on postgame that he isn’t counting on Romero being able to pitch in the postseason. Says he isn’t healthy yet and isn’t ready to go out there and compete.
