NLDS Game Three Discussion Thread, Phillies at Rockies, October 11, 2009
Philadelphia Phillies at Colorado Rockies, Oct 10, 2009 9:37 PM EDT
It's been a long layoff. How long? The Angels and Red Sox had had yet to play a single game in their ALDS matchup when the Phillies and Rockies completed their Game Two on Thursday afternoon. The Angels just eliminated the Red Sox, three games to none, earlier this afternoon.
J.A. Happ, Lefty #3, gets the ball tonight for the Phillies, versus Jason Hammel. It's a cold one in Denver. Coors Field just turned blue. Uh huhhuh huhuh.
Discuss the game below.

Doesn’t make any sense at all. I understand that both teams have to play in the weather, but that doesn’t mean it is fair to the fans or the players.
Not fair to the fans? I bet more than half of the people there tonight are also Broncos fans that sit through -5 degree weather in some cases. It sucks no question, but I don’t think that it’s unfair to the fans just because baseballs a warm weather game.

I mean, I guess there's no way around this.
Oh nevermind, there is — don’t schedule an October game in Colorado for 8 o’clock at night!
Yup, idiots.

Well, it looks like Phillies-Rockies might be the only game on tomorrow, so maybe they’ll come up with a better starting time, like 6:07 ET. Yankees leading 2-1 in the bottom of the 8th and former Phillie great Nick Punto gets thrown out at home trying to score from second on an infield single, with no outs. Ouch.

finally one good call by TBS.
Really, if I had missed even one pitch while I had to endure Yankees splooging all over one another with champagne and broadcaster adulation, it would have resulted in a very strongly worded e-mail to Mr. Selig in the morning!

Maybe three more
As to WholeCamels’ comment about the Angels playing the Red Sox three times since the Phillies ended game two, if the Yankees win and if the Phillies and Rockies go to game 5, they will play three games after the last division series game with any other team in it.

Something to monitor
For those who read and/or like Fangraphs, Jason Hammel’s best pitch (by pitch value) this year has been the curve ball, and the Phils have had the least success this year against (by pitch value)… yup, the curve ball.
Maybe advantage Phils, as the curve should be impaired if anything will be. (right?)
Happ’s almost all fastball approach hopefully won’t be adversely affected.

I know we’re all bitching a lot about the strike zone, but it’s magnified by the fact that Happ loves to throw low strikes, and he’s flat out not getting more than half of those calls. Hammel works higher up in the zone, but his curves that find the same spot as Happ’s fastball are being called strikes more often. It’s shitty umpiring, and it’s making Happ’s task tonight infinitely harder.
I wonder if the Rockies and Phillies will score more than the 9 points the Bills and Browns put up today.

If that's a Bourn reference
the guy’s OBP was around .370 – .380 this year, that definitely works. Not saying we should have waited for him to figure it out, but he could be a good player for a while

For when Giambi comes off the bench in the 13th.
Seriously, I think he sees Bastardo as a one-batter, lefty-only guy.
It’s not that I’m “saving” Bastardo — because that’s stupid bullpen use — but if you use him for only Helton here, Tracy has free reign to use Stewart, Hawpe, Giambi, Young, etc. for the rest of the game without fear of another LOOGY. Given that they’re probably going to score anyway, as you say, I think Madson’s the right move.
Madson before the 9th

This is the game you have to win. It’s very unlikely we fall short with two shots behind Lee and Hamels. Use Madson for as long as he’s viable.
I’d keep Madson in for the 8th.
Of course, assuming we get a lead and he holds it, this means that you’ll be seeing Lidge take the mound around 2AM.
Which is kind of good, as it makes for a seamless transition between nightmares.
Alright, dajafi, truth syrum time. Greater nightmare: Brad Lidge taking the mound for the 9th… or Chad Durbin?

i have absolutely no idea how the phillies are going to handle the bullpen from here out. i assume you can’t pitch kendrick or durbin in a close game under any circumstances, right? i don’t really think you want pedro and his slow starts out there in a one inning opportunity either. bastardo maybe for a lefty could work, but i guess it’s pretty much myers/lidge, and i’m not trusting either.
Pedro’s slow start is ridiculously overrated.

Yeah it’s ugly from here on out. Luckily Charlie did something smart for a change, and got his better reliever(s) in when the game was still in the balance. But cobbling together the rest of this game could be interesting, either way.

Just what you guys on the east coast needed – a four-hour game starting after 10pm.
Just heard Eckersley comment that he estimated about 50 bad calls by the home plate umpire. Out of about 335 pitches, that’s approximately 15% (or around one in seven) wrong on balls & strikes. They’ve got to be able to do better than that.
