NLDS Game Three Discussion Thread, Phillies at Rockies, October 11, 2009

Philadelphia Phillies at Colorado Rockies, Oct 10, 2009 9:37 PM EDT

It's been a long layoff.  How long?  The Angels and Red Sox had had yet to play a single game in their ALDS matchup when the Phillies and Rockies completed their Game Two on Thursday afternoon.  The Angels just eliminated the Red Sox, three games to none, earlier this afternoon.

J.A. Happ, Lefty #3, gets the ball tonight for the Phillies, versus Jason Hammel.  It's a cold one in Denver.  Coors Field just turned blue.  Uh huhhuh huhuh.

Discuss the game below.

Still too cold for baseball. Gonna be a messy one.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 11, 2009 9:33 PM EDT reply actions

28 degrees

And apparently dropping, as it was 31 just 45 minutes ago. MLB is run by fools.

by David S. Cohen on Oct 11, 2009 9:33 PM EDT reply actions

Doesn’t make any sense at all. I understand that both teams have to play in the weather, but that doesn’t mean it is fair to the fans or the players.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 11, 2009 9:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Not fair to the fans? I bet more than half of the people there tonight are also Broncos fans that sit through -5 degree weather in some cases. It sucks no question, but I don’t think that it’s unfair to the fans just because baseballs a warm weather game.

by philiafan14364 on Oct 11, 2009 9:41 PM EDT up reply actions

No. What I mean is that the fans get an inferior product. Who really wants to see bad pitching because the pitcher can’t grip the ball, bad fielding for the same reason, and bad hitting because the batters are swinging icicles?

by FuquaManuel on Oct 11, 2009 9:46 PM EDT up reply actions

I mean, I guess there's no way around this.

Oh nevermind, there is — don’t schedule an October game in Colorado for 8 o’clock at night!

Yup, idiots.

it’s all about ratings. Denver – New England game ended at 6 pm mountain west. Don’t wanna have conflicting priorities

all about the cash

by CoburnsCuddleBuddy on Oct 11, 2009 9:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, it looks like Phillies-Rockies might be the only game on tomorrow, so maybe they’ll come up with a better starting time, like 6:07 ET. Yankees leading 2-1 in the bottom of the 8th and former Phillie great Nick Punto gets thrown out at home trying to score from second on an infield single, with no outs. Ouch.

by phillyinportland on Oct 11, 2009 9:48 PM EDT reply actions

Always was, although Punto sure is a gritty player who can make some great plays in the field.

finally one good call by TBS.

Really, if I had missed even one pitch while I had to endure Yankees splooging all over one another with champagne and broadcaster adulation, it would have resulted in a very strongly worded e-mail to Mr. Selig in the morning!

by Wet Luzinski on Oct 11, 2009 9:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe three more

As to WholeCamels’ comment about the Angels playing the Red Sox three times since the Phillies ended game two, if the Yankees win and if the Phillies and Rockies go to game 5, they will play three games after the last division series game with any other team in it.

by phillyinportland on Oct 11, 2009 9:57 PM EDT reply actions

I’m scared.

by besam32 on Oct 11, 2009 10:02 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

Something to monitor

For those who read and/or like Fangraphs, Jason Hammel’s best pitch (by pitch value) this year has been the curve ball, and the Phils have had the least success this year against (by pitch value)… yup, the curve ball.

by PhillyFriar on Oct 11, 2009 10:02 PM EDT reply actions

Maybe advantage Phils, as the curve should be impaired if anything will be. (right?)

Happ’s almost all fastball approach hopefully won’t be adversely affected.

would go broke using stubhub. what bothers me though is the angels use if you are on their mailing list you get a code to buy playoff tickets, but phillies use a drawing system.

would hate to see it but

the LAA-LAD would be as good a consolation prize as any. Splits only the 2nd biggest market, would piss off the fans b/c of start times.

crys of glee here

and i hope ANA knocks out the yankees, and if the phils don’t make it, I’ll pull for the rockies or LAD.

I know we’re all bitching a lot about the strike zone, but it’s magnified by the fact that Happ loves to throw low strikes, and he’s flat out not getting more than half of those calls. Hammel works higher up in the zone, but his curves that find the same spot as Happ’s fastball are being called strikes more often. It’s shitty umpiring, and it’s making Happ’s task tonight infinitely harder.

It’s not that I’m “saving” Bastardo — because that’s stupid bullpen use — but if you use him for only Helton here, Tracy has free reign to use Stewart, Hawpe, Giambi, Young, etc. for the rest of the game without fear of another LOOGY. Given that they’re probably going to score anyway, as you say, I think Madson’s the right move.

i have absolutely no idea how the phillies are going to handle the bullpen from here out. i assume you can’t pitch kendrick or durbin in a close game under any circumstances, right? i don’t really think you want pedro and his slow starts out there in a one inning opportunity either. bastardo maybe for a lefty could work, but i guess it’s pretty much myers/lidge, and i’m not trusting either.

by ajay on Oct 12, 2009 2:18 AM EDT up reply actions

And a win in game three in a series that was tied 1-1 is more just a win. It puts all the pressure on the Rockies tomorrow.

by phillyinportland on Oct 12, 2009 2:22 AM EDT up reply actions

true true. Historically the 3rd game in these series is a huge-onic drivers’ seat.

by Wet Luzinski on Oct 12, 2009 2:23 AM EDT up reply actions

quoting Fri links/ Scott Lauber

Consider this: Since wild-card play started in 1995, 11 best-of-five NL Division Series have been tied after two games. The winner of Game 3 has won nine of those series. Only the 2002 Giants and the 2004 Astros lost a tie-breaking Game 3 in an NL divisional series and still advanced, both times by beating the Braves.

Just what you guys on the east coast needed – a four-hour game starting after 10pm.
Just heard Eckersley comment that he estimated about 50 bad calls by the home plate umpire. Out of about 335 pitches, that’s approximately 15% (or around one in seven) wrong on balls & strikes. They’ve got to be able to do better than that.

What a fucking game. I’m a little bit bent right now…free shots all around at the local sports bar.
