My 5 highlights from inside the stadium - What you may not have seen on TV...
I'm not sure what TBS showed on TV and what they didn't, but I was in section 109 last night, and these are my "from the stadium" highlights (in reverse order)...
5 - Werth in RF after his 3 run shot - He gave a little point to the left field fans, then the right field fans, then the first base line fans... And then he watched the replay of his homerun on the jumbotron. The females in our section went nuts. I'd like to trade lives with Werth for one day (like in the movie Vice Versa with Fred Savage and Judge Reinhold), bang everything that moves, and hopefully only leave him with crabs.
4 - "Hit-the-show-ers!!!" (clap clap... clap clap clap) - During the course of the game there were chants of "Take a show-er," but in the bottom of the 8th with the game out of reach and Manny in left, the left field crowd switched it up to "HIT the show-ers!" It was loud, and we heard it pretty clearly on the opposite side of the field. Manny certainly heard it loud and clear.
3 - The girl with the sanitary toilet seat sheet cover hanging out of her pants - There was some girl in our section that had one of those paper sanitary toilet seat covers hanging from the back of her pants all the way down to the back of her knees. My friends and I were thinking that (and I hope this is PG enough) the sanitary sheet must have stuck to her ass when she stood up from the can, and she basically trapped it there when she pulled up her pants. What made it better was that she was posing for pictures and trying to dance around all seductively, having no idea what was going on in her pants. Finally, some guy told the girl's boyfriend about the sanitary sheet. He looked like he just wanted her to just go away, and she looked about as embarrassed as a human can possibly look. But for the rest of us in section 109, good times were had by all!
2 - The walk of shame - After the final out, obviously I'm sure they showed the celebratory pileup on the pitchers mound... You've seen one, you've seen them all. But what I witnessed for the first time ever was the mopey, sad, slow walk of shame by the Dodgers bullpen from center field back to the dugout amid the fireworks, screaming fans, and the opposition celebrating.
1 - Booing TBS - This one I'm guessing was on TV, and was well deserved... When Ernie Johnson (of TBS) took the microphone, the fans booed him loudly (well, not him so much as TBS in general) for the garbage scheduling they gave the Phillies in Round 1 vs. Colorado (the first 2 games on weekdays at 2:37pm - I mean seriously... Are you kidding me?). EJ seemed confused and totally off guard as to why they were booing him (I think he said "O..K...?"). He was pretty much off his game for the rest of his presentation. I think we actually rattled him a little. Well done.
If you were there (or not there), do you have any highlights of your own?

#s 5, 4, and 1 were on the broadcast. And they were all great to see.

I wish 3 was on the broadcast. I specifically saw #5 … shit, I’d like to be Werth for a day.

#1 was hilarious
They boo EJ, and he thanks the crowd.
There was also a sign mocking the “bad Philadelphia crowds” stories. It went something like:
“Philadelphia hates:
1 – EJ
2 – Santa Claus”
"When you make your final stand
I'll be right there
I'll never leave
And all I ask of you is
Believe"

I actually like EJ. The real bad guys were the three nitwits in the booth, not him. But we had to boo EJ just because he’s an agent of his crappy employer.

I loved the ovation Werth got after both of his homers. One thing I noticed about the crowd last night (from way up in section 428) was that you could feel the tension the whole time, even with a 4 or 5 run lead — I figured they’d be a little more raucous the whole game but there were definitely points where it got pretty silent as everyone was holding their breath waiting for something horrible to happen.
I also wish they’d played “High Hopes” sooner after the game ended, as I was really looking forward to singing it with everybody — they showed a lot of the celebration stuff, did some interviews, went to the obligatory locker room champagne scenes (we left after the Jimmy/Chooch interview on the Jumbotron) and at some point while we were on 95 I think they played it. I know during the regular season it generally came on right after the end of the game. But hey, who can complain?

Agreed on "High Hopes"
Should have been played right away. I forever will hold a grudge against TBS, so let’s go ahead and blame them (whether it’s warranted or not).

Also, I really want to know if the dudes holding up the “THIS GUY STINKS” and “MANNY IS A KENZO” and “TURTLE?” signs behind various right-handed hitters showed up on TV.
*sigh*

It refers to people from the Kensington section of NE Philly, which is known as a trashy neighborhood. People from outside Kensington use it as a derogatory term, whereas some people from the area refer to themselves proudly as a Kenzo.
And I didn’t know what it meant either last night. It had to be explained to me too. Inside jokes on the jumbotron are kinda weak. I prefer my background signs to be dumbed down for a mass audience.

Interesting. A little disturbing too – Kensington is a heavily Puerto Rican neighborhood, right? I hope they weren’t thinking along those lines.
by taco pal on Oct 22, 2009 11:43 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
It is, evidently. Maybe they were – I hadn’t thought of that. Perhaps they got away with a pretty bad racial slur.

Man, would that be embarrassing. That was on national TV! I’m sure the Phillies would have confiscated the sign except they were probably thinking “What the hell does that mean?” just like most everyone else.

Some parts are, but I think the people most commonly referred to as Kenzos are more the old-timers there, lower-income white folks (and I say this as someone who lives in Fishtown, which is technically in Kensington). Some people proudly call themselves Kenzos, some people use it as a term of derision (like the dude with the sign), but I don’t think there’s any racial connotations implied.
*sigh*

Yeah...
If they wanted to be racist about it, they’d have said something like “Manny is from Fairhill” or “Manny Lives at 3rd and Indiana” or something. The “Kenzo” reference was probably just good fun, an inside joke to Philadelphians.
And as you say, Kensington is pretty huge. Port Richmond is technically a part of Kensington too, isn’t it? One of my friends lives near the Memphis Taproom on Memphis and Cumberland, and his neighborhood is sandwiched between Fishtown and Port Richmond while not being a part of either.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
by mikefive on Oct 22, 2009 3:17 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yup, I think so. There’s always debates about what neighborhood is what, and while Fishtown is IN Kensington, don’t tell anyone from Fishtown that they live in Kensington or they’ll start arguing with you about it. People make jokes about the area being “Port Fishington” or something to that effect.

Haha, yeah...
The “Turtle?” one was the best, but only because it had a question mark with it as if to say “Do you guys agree that he looks like Turtle?”
I liked the one they had behind Werth too, that said “Cut ur hair, u hippy”

I was lucky enough to hear HK's last "High Hopes"
I was one of the many fans that bum-rushed the gates to get in the stadium last year in game 5. I ran down to the corner of our dugout where i guess Pedro Feliz’s girlfriend or wife was sitting and he came and signed autographes. Victorino also came over and gave her a hug but no autograph. As soon as he went back to the dugout i noticed Harry come onto the field and start singing…one of those moments in my young (21) life i will never forget. I got to rub my Howard jersey and towel into the dirt by the dugout and now they are in a nice glass case in my office. I may have to break the “dirty” jersey out for some luck. Sorry about the rambling

At least they don’t have the dancing robot on FOX for their MLB games. I’m not the only one here that hates that thing, am I?

Cant buy me love would be hilarious
I’m a big fan of nursery rhyme type songs being played. Like the theme to sesame street would be hilarious… plus isnt that staged in NY?

I think when A Rod is up...
They need to play a clip from Almost Famous where the kid thinks he’s about to bang Penny Lane (Kate Hudson’s character) and he says…
“I love you. And I’m about to boldly go where… many men have gone before.”

"You're So Vain" by Carly Simon?
Personally, I like “New York City Don’t Mean Nothing” by Savatage, but it’s too obscure a reference.

Quick question..
On your #4 with Manny, are they pulling him back from someone? i didnt think he went after anyone

That’s an old picture (you can see Nomar in the background). I looked for a picture of Manny in left field with the Phillies fans behind him, but couldn’t find one, so I just grabbed this one, where he looks frustrated.
