Shades of 1950 - Phillies Arrive in New York by Train
When the first members of the team emerged from Penn Station on the corner of 32nd Street and Eighth Avenue, they were greeted by a couple of Phillies fans. Their voices were soon overtaken by more lusty locals chanting, "Let’s go, Yankees." Perhaps that explains outfielder Jayson Werth’s terse "no" when asked if he could give his assessment of the short ride.

THAT Hinske? Eric Hinske? Yes please.
Homegrown talent has Phillies on verge of dynasty
It'd be unfair to cite this as a strength for the Phillies (what with Jeter, Posada, Rivera, Cano, Pettitte), but it is pretty cool that so many Phillies are farm products.

Not much story-wise on Domonic Brown in the Arizona Fall League, but he's doing really well -- 1.011 OPS, six walks and eight strikeouts. So far, so good...

Didn't Hinske hit a HR vs the Phils
in the WS last year? He was pretty bad for the Pirates but put up a respectable .828 ops off the bench for the Yanks. He also owned the base paths with a 100% SB rate (1/1, heh).
If I were you I’d be rooting for Bruney, when he’s off, which is quite often he’s batting practice.
Strikeouts are boring- Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.

maybe that’s why his slider’s been elevated all year. The Hinske Curse?

So then all he has to do is strike him out to end the series again, and it will be reversed.

What would have been worse for her? Getting arrested or not getting those Series tickets.
By the way, do the police in Bensalem have nothing better to do than send someone out on an undercover sting about baseball tickets?
by phillyinportland on Oct 27, 2009 3:52 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well, doing the deed and getting hustled with counterfeits, for one, wholly independent of the attentiveness of her well-enducated paramour.
But to your second question: doesn’t take a genius to guess who was out looking for tickets on Craigslist in the first place! For the last week of the month, it’s a good week to speed through Bensalem.

winter leagues
Check out Sebastian Valle’s numbers from the Mexican League. I know the Mexican League is easier than the Arizona league, but still.
by taco pal on Oct 27, 2009 10:57 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
We were talking about this over at Phuture Phillies: surprisingly, it’s not all that much easier to hit in the Mexican Winter League. It’s usually filled with Mexican professionals and Triple-A players, and Valle’s probably only playing there because he’s a special case, playing for his hometown team. He’s certainly doing the hometown proud, too: he could be playing in Legion Ball, and his .455/.480/1.318 line with 5 HRs in 6 games would still be impressive.

Kryptonite...?
Really? That guy is either trying to stir up the Yankee hate pot or he really believes that the only players the Phils have are Lee and Howard. Even then, Lee seems to already have been neutralized by their talent and Howard by an outside slider.
Either way, love it!

Anyone see Jimmy giving the yankees ‘bulletin board’ material on leno last night.

I know – hence the smiley – sad thing is i didn’t recognize him (i don’t normally watch leno – i find him very unfunny and hope this move to 10 PM bombs for a variety of reasons) and was just surfing and my gf said ’that’s jimmy’.
I’m sure there’s a clip of it up somewhere

Leno has moments
His man on the street and headline/want ads bits are almost always funny, but that has more to do with the fact that people are idiots, as oppossed to Leno being a comedy genius. For a guy who does stand-up habitually, his timing is awkward.
But, I digress. Back to Phillies talk.
by Cormican on Oct 27, 2009 2:07 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
In his prime, Leno was actually a really good stand-up comic. But that was a long, long time ago.

Mercer county
I thought yesterday we established that the dividing line was the State Barber Shop in Trenton!
Anyways, I loved this quote:
“I’m sure I’ll get guys coming in here trying to give me the razz,” Beetel said,
as I think we should all use 1950-era phrases in pregame chats. It’d be swell.

Samuel Alito is from Trenton and roots for the Phillies, for what it’s worth. Not sure where he lived in relationship to the barbershop though.

Baseball Prospectus
I just lost a little respect for the Post-Season Simulator, but in the corporate speak world, the Yankees achieved synergy.
When it was Yanks up 3-2 vs Angels and Phils Waiting:
(odds to Win WS):
Yanks=50.8%
Angels=3.7%
Phillies=45.4%
Now that the Yanks have finished off the Halos, not only did they absorb the 3.7% chance the Angels had, they even took some more from the Phillies!
Yanks = 59.9%, Phils = 40.1%
i guess pitching matchups had something to do with this, maybe, but still, that doens’t make a whole lot of sense.
by Bilzo on Oct 27, 2009 4:10 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I think you’re right: it’s the pitching matchups. I’m sure that a large chunk of the 4.3% we lost was because there was no ALCS Game 7, which would have meant no Sabathia/Lackey in Game 1 of the World Series. And I’m guessing the rest of it was lost due to the fact that we now don’t get a chance to play the Angels, who are obviously an inferior team to the Yanks.
