Philadelphia Phillies at New York Yankees, Oct 28, 2009 7:57 PM EDT
Ho-hum, another World Series.
Just kidding, how incredibly GEEKED OUT are you guys for this?! The championship defense begins now!
In a matchup of the last two American League Cy Young Award winners, the Phillies' Cliff Lee and CC Sabathia look to continue their red-hot postseason streaks.

That, and there’s so many outsiders here that even this Florida kid with a low powered Mazda 3 is one of the better drivers around…

ROFL
Gotta love that “You still have LeBron” tag while comparing Lee and Sabathia.
The situation is not remotely comparable. The Cavs can offer LeBron as much money as any other team if not more. If baseball had any kind of salary controls, Sabathia and Lee would still be in Cleveland.
Flinging dung would be about par for the course for Clevelanders. Cleveland. Steamer.

Hey, credit where it’s due: they got it right. I don’t mind if they have to huddle up to figure it out.
finally they huddle
took them the whole postseason….now if umps do that more often, i will say no to expanding replay. it is the umps refusing to confer that wants me to expand replay
Conferring has generally been the SOP for several years now, ever since they busted up the old umpires’ union and league offices, reorganizing ump supervision under Sandy Alderson.
but not in these playoffs
the alcs at least three brutal errors (Swisher didn’t leave bag early, pickoff at 2nd, two men out at third), the twins/yankees game (double)
the bases loaded HBP the Tigers didn't get

yup
but it STILL took more time than it would have if they’d just used instant replay. So much for the whole “instant replay will slow the game down” argument…
as a Phillies fan, it seems to happen about every playoff series. There was one very similar to this in 1980 vs. the Astros.

What on earth is there to freak out about? It was a clear and obvious double play whether it was a flyout or groundout to begin with.
It takes a whole bunch of homerism and willful ignorance to think otherwise.
some umps say if a fielder drops an infield fly on purpose they call the batter out
to cut out cheap double plays.
I have to admit, Jay’s legit in that and many other respects.

When two players appear to be about equal in all-around value, run scoring and run prevention, you have to go with the better defender. A run saved is more valuable than a run scored.
There are diminishing returns with runs scored.
There’s also a cumulative effect to poor defense and pitching that doesn’t apply to poor hitting.
It’s complicated.
I figured that with infielders they have way more defensive chances than ABs.

At this point, this inning is going to be long enough that they’d better score, because Lee will be stiff when it’s over.
i think you still have to trot him out there tho for the 8th

If you could pitch like that again, that would be great.

I’m torn on this. If you’re thinking about using him in Game 4, it would be great to get him out now. But it IS the top of the lineup. Then again, it IS a 4-run lead.

Maybe not to start
But it may be necessary if Lee gets into trouble. If the Phillies get some more runs, they might not want Lee to pitch the 9th.
