Phillies Breakfast Links, October 6, 2009: Playoff-palooza!, Hamels or Lee?
Phillies not giving up on Lidge
Lidge has thrown the ball better in his last two appearances. He threw a cut fastball for the first time this season Saturday against the Marlins, which he hopes could help him against left-handed hitters.
wait what?

I prefer Lee, but I'm not going to get too worked up about it.

ESPN's website says Hamels in Game 1, Lee in Game 2.
BTW… who is responsible for the scheduling f-job that we got handed? Can I direct all my venom and hatred at Selig— as is my want— or is he somehow not making the call?

My guess is Ted Turner had a significant part in it with TBS. Which actually works out well – Selig is a buffoon, not worthy of anyones hatred. Turner on the other hand, eats children.

I don’t think Turner’s actually involved with programming anymore. The faceless corporate suits at Time Warner are the real culprits.

it's really simple
The Phillies are, at best, the fourth best draw out of the eight teams left standing (definitely behind NYY, BOS, LAD… maybe ahead of STL and LAA). The Rockies are probably the worst of the eight (not a slight to them, necessarily, but that’s how it is). Of course we got hosed.

Isn’t the image of Ted Turner as the devil more entertaining than the actual reason?
by Steve J on Oct 6, 2009 9:01 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Definitely
Plus I hear he enjoys sex with canines.
(Everything I know I learned from Family Guy. If it was on that show, it’s gotta be true!)

so ratings alone are the only consideration. How refreshing. Anyone know of a way to stream the game (for free) to a computer?
by Boundforbeach on Oct 6, 2009 10:51 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
It’s understandable. Though galling since the Yankees are going to get Game 2 of their series in prime time anyway. So it’s not like it was an either/or choice, as we could have split the prime time slots.
Anyway, Rich Hoffman’s argument is the best one I’ve heard. If you really think the entire country only wants to watch the Yankees and Red Sox, the fine, put them in prime time. But in that case, why not just double-book the games? All you accomplish by putting the Phillies game in the afternoon is ensure that no one watches it at all.

Yes…ratings alone are the only consideration.
And I’m not sure why this is a shock to ANYONE – it’s the only consideration EVERY YEAR
The networks don’t air these games for their health – they air them to make money

I said keep asking.
Everytime someone asks, they’re told to stop asking – if one ignores the request by the folk who run this place – why not ban them – i bet the number of repeat requesters would go down precipitously. This isn’t a free speech kind of place – it’s their sand box – it’s nice to follow their rules.

FU jackass. Forgive me for wanting to watch a playoff game while I’m stuck at work. I didn’t know it was taboo to ask. I won’t do it again.

Pay 9.99 for the MLB package that’s being offered.
And also learn to read before you have to call me names – I said folk who KEEP asking – if you only asked once how is it that you ‘kept asking’ – if you ask more than once – then you should be banned in my opinion – hence the use of the word Keep.
Though I’m not sure what the former first union bank (for fairfield or fordham universities) have to do with a donkey

Lidge? Really?
Is Manuel really thinking he can use Lidge in a close game? That’s fucking insane. And not the good kind of “fucking insane.”

this should be an interesting ride…

I’d even be scared if the, ahem, “good” Lidge who threw three scoreless outings to end the year (2.1 IP, 1 H, 1 K) comes in with a 1-run lead. Even if he comes out hitting his spots, just one single means Eric Young Jr., Dexter Fowler, or Carlos Gonzalez comes on as a pinch runner and immediately swipes second and third.
It’s systemic failure, and I just hope it doesn’t bite us in the ass.

It will. It seems he has developed a “cutter” just in time to buttfuck us in the playoffs. But like I said before, if we were knocked out of the playoffs for any reason BUT our inability to close games, I would fell kinda cheated.

I’d be curios to see the numbers on those ‘cut fastballs’ lidge threw and if it really was the first ones he threw all season – maybe if i have some time tonight

Looking at the “10 Numbers” article, it brought to mind some ESPN yutz last night (Winfield? Phillips? dunno) saying the key for the Rockies was to make it a “bullpen game.” But it looks like the Rockies’ pen ain’t all that great either. If we’re into pens by innings 5-6, these could be mash-fests.

I think that was Winfield. I’m watching BBTN closely these days for the nuttiest comments of this postseason. It’s not pretty when moron commentators are forced to focus their attention on teams they’ve barely followed at all for the whole year and are expected to say insightful things about them.
My favorites from last year were:
1. Eduardo Perez saying the Dodgers would beat the Phillies because the Phillies lineup card wasn’t as predictable and Pedro Feliz didn’t know where he would be batting before he got to the ballpark.
2. John Kruk saying the Phillies’ main disadvantage in one series was their weak defense on the right side of their infield (not just Howard but Utley too).

Rockies this year remind me of the 2007 Phillies—their MO was always to get to the opposing team’s BP. Problem is, in the playoffs, you have to be able to hit the staters at some point. The Rox record vs. LHP is .500 overall and 8-16 on the road. I don’t see how any Rox fan can be overconfident looking at those numbers, unless they just keep thinking of 2007, which has absolutely no bearing on this series. I actually think these two teams are pretty evenly matched.
