Uncle Charlie does the right thing in splitting up the lefties. And Jim Tracy bats Atkins and Torrealba 5th and 6th. Good news so far.

So who’s batting between utley and howard?

Bruntlett.

Damnit, you know what I meant. And since Utley doesn’t show a huge platoon split, him and Howard back-to-back isn’t the worst thing in the world.

As long as the rockies haven’t noticed that in the second half of the year Utley isn’t as good on outside pitches as he was the first half of the year :)

Another day to be glad I work from home, though I don’t think the productivity is going to be so great this afternoon. Any guesses as to how out of sync 1210 and TBS are going to be? I can’t listen to 3 hours of whatever schmoes TBS has decided to saddle us with today.

Jesus, can we make Jimenez throw more than 5 pitches in the first inning? Is that so much to ask?

I hope they score before those horrible shadows start creeping.

by WanderingMoses on Oct 7, 2009 2:51 PM EDT reply actions

Man. No one has looked more lost than Utley over the last month.

Could he be injured?

by FuquaManuel on Oct 7, 2009 2:53 PM EDT reply actions

Jimenez doesn’t throw a first pitch strike and gets through the inning in 10 pitches. Those are some pretty poor at bats, boys.

Hey was so safe. We got 1one there.

by Ritty77 on Oct 7, 2009 3:00 PM EDT reply actions

Right? I mean, do they think Lee’s going to uncork a wild pitch with the pitcher up?

by PhillyFriar on Oct 7, 2009 3:01 PM EDT up reply actions

He was definitely safe. Not that I’ll complain. Torrealba’s retarded for trying to get to third with 2 outs anyway.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 7, 2009 3:15 PM EDT reply actions

Because the 8-hole hitter needs to have the patience to take a walk if the pitcher’s going to pitch around him. And Feliz could n ever do that.

It wasn’t an egregious call though. The throw beat him by a mile, but the front leg tag was barely noticeable even on replay, and the crotch tag was late. Oh well, no harm no foul for Rockies fans anyway.

Fuck. Why do they keep taking this pitch! Adjust! They are all coming in in the same spot.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 7, 2009 3:35 PM EDT reply actions

Can’t blame Utley there, that’s a pretty good at bat. You can’t ever expect Ubaldo to spot a 3-2 curve for a strike.

by PhillyFriar on Oct 7, 2009 3:35 PM EDT reply actions

Utley

Didn’t this exact same thing happen to him in Game 1 vs. Jeff Francis two years ago?

by taco pal on Oct 7, 2009 3:35 PM EDT reply actions

Yup. But at least Ubaldo’s got good stuff.

by PhillyFriar on Oct 7, 2009 3:36 PM EDT up reply actions

by WanderingMoses on Oct 7, 2009 3:37 PM EDT reply actions

You guys need to give a little credit to Jimenez. He’s making some really superb pitches.

(Which isn’t to say that Utley isn’t a mess right now.)

Dammit—Howard caught stealing. Not a good enough jump to go there.

Hubris. Someone needs to whisper in his ear “You still weigh 250 pounds!”

by taco pal on Oct 7, 2009 3:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, Ubaldo’s dealing. Not sure when he found his pristine command, but it’s bad news for us.

I don’t think Howard going there is a bad idea as long as he gets a good jump. You can’t stutter step and then go.

by PhillyFriar on Oct 7, 2009 3:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I agree. With the stutter step he should have just lumbered back… Werth might gap or park one.

by dajafi on Oct 7, 2009 3:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Is there something about this guy’s delivery that they think they can steal on him?

Howard got an absolutely terrible jump.

I think Ubaldo just isn’t paying attention to the baserunners. Lee literally took off before Ubaldo went into his delivery.

Actually, see above — Helton definitely would have gotten that for a putout.

Not that it makes Chooch’s baserunning blunder any better. But it is ironic.

by PhillyFriar on Oct 7, 2009 4:04 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s all moot anyway. Who knows if the same pitch would have even been thrown with a runner on second?

Rollins with the first pitch single. 2 on, 2 out.

by Ritty77 on Oct 7, 2009 4:03 PM EDT reply actions

Marquis in to relieve Morales for the bottom of the 8th.

*sigh*

by zempf on Oct 7, 2009 5:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Werth with a little chopper to the mound, 1-3 for the out. 1 down in the 8th.

*sigh*

Ibanez with a long at-bat, chops one to second on a full count, 4-3. 2 down.

*sigh*

by zempf on Oct 7, 2009 5:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Feliz hit one DEEP into the hole in SS and Tulowitzki got it but couldn’t get it over in time. Now everyone has a base hit, oh boy.

Ruiz hits the first pitch to Tulo on a short hop, easy 6-4 putout.. on to the ninth.

by zempf on Oct 7, 2009 5:16 PM EDT up reply actions

I mean, this Cliff Lee guy is alright, but I’m still with those who think we should have traded Taylor, Drabek, Brown, d’Arnaud, Utley and Hamels for Halladay.

by PhillyFriar on Oct 7, 2009 5:07 PM EDT reply actions

Hmm… I think Ida thrown in the left field seats into that deal, just to make it fair for them.

by philiafan14364 on Oct 7, 2009 5:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Hold up, isn’t Marquis scheduled to start at some point in this series?

by FuquaManuel on Oct 7, 2009 5:08 PM EDT reply actions

He’s not scheduled, and I doubt he will at this point. He’s one of the options for Game 4 (along with Contreras), but it’s looking more and more likely that he would go to Ubaldo.

by PhillyFriar on Oct 7, 2009 5:10 PM EDT up reply actions

They’ve got 1-2-3 up in the 9th. Lee is at 96 pitches. Who’s more comfortable with any of our relievers?

Thought not.

by dajafi on Oct 7, 2009 5:08 PM EDT reply actions

I pretty much guarantee that no matter what happens, Lee comes out for the bottom of the 9th. Maybe not if we put up a 10-spot this inning or something.

*sigh*

by zempf on Oct 7, 2009 5:09 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Lidge could blow a 15 run lead personally

by philiafan14364 on Oct 7, 2009 5:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Well they haven’t shown anyone warming up from what I’ve seen.

by JasonB on Oct 7, 2009 5:11 PM EDT up reply actions

They haven’t shown anyone warming up, so it looks that way.

by JasonB on Oct 7, 2009 5:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Bring in Lidge!

Totally serious. The town feels loyalty to him and it’ll be expected that he’ll get to pitch in the postseason – here’s a chance to do it and even if he walks the bases loaded the tying run still won’t be at the plate. Get Lidge’s appearance out of the way, in other words. Maybe only after Lee gets the first out or two.

WIth a lead of seven or eight runs, maybe. Lead of five? No.

by dajafi on Oct 7, 2009 5:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, when I wrote that I didn’t realize 1-2-3 were due up. In my defense, I did qualify it with Lee spotting him two of his three outs.

by The Navigator on Oct 7, 2009 5:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Even then there’s no point. It’s the playoffs, the time to make Brad Lidge better about himself is passed.

by JasonB on Oct 7, 2009 5:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Plus his last tw ooutings against the marlins were fine weren’t they?

Maybe with two outs and no one on.

by mattjg on Oct 7, 2009 5:13 PM EDT up reply actions

That makes utterly no sense on any level

Don't frack with me or you'll get a punch in the kidneys...you've been warned

by jemagee on Oct 7, 2009 5:13 PM EDT up reply actions

I see what he means: Lidge is probably going to pitch at some point, so probably better he do it with a 5-run lead than with a 1-run lead.

Still, I don’t think Charlie necessarily thinks that way, and with Lee dealing, it makes the most sense to just stick with him.

by PhillyFriar on Oct 7, 2009 5:15 PM EDT up reply actions

He got his ‘confidence back’ in those last two marlin appearances – right now he’s feeling good – and th phils are going to take a 1-0 lead – the risk of the game somehow getting out of hand isn’t worth it – lidge will either have it or not – i’d rather have a game (or two) in hand before finding out.

Don't frack with me or you'll get a punch in the kidneys...you've been warned

by jemagee on Oct 7, 2009 5:17 PM EDT up reply actions

on second thought, never mind

If he pitched well it might contribute to a sense that he was all the way back and ready to close again, and I definitely don’t think that’s true, so, best to avoid anything that might lead to Lidge being brought into a tight spot.
