Mother Sues Phillies for Howards 200th
So - I guess the 12 year old girl who caught Ryan Howards 200th Homerun in Florida didn't get enough swag. According to the article when she caught it - they did the traditional exchange of stuff for the ball - girls momma not happy - files suit - she gest ball back
I wonder - did the cash hungry (My assumption) mother ask for the ball back first or just sue assuming they'd pay her off cause they wanted the ball?

I don’t really like this precedent. Whatever happened to the time when kids/parents would be happy to get something signed from a ballplayer in exchange for the original ball? Seems like this family isn’t really all that into baseball. The few hundred dollars you can get for this ball in eBay is nothing compared to the pricelessness of getting a signed bat or actually meeting Ryan Howard.
You could be right in that the mother was hoping they’d get some sort of settlement.
The average 12 year old girl – do you think she really cares either way which ball she has?

What about....
… an autographed Ricky Bo hat? I’ve got one. It’s yours if you want it.
I’ve also got an autographed Madson ball, but that’s not going anywhere.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
I’ve got an autographed Shane Victorino ball from Spring Training this past Feb. It’s the only autograph I’ve ever gotten from a ballplayer. I also have a signed Phils ticket stub with Andre Iguodala’s signature. He happened to be sitting a few rows up from me in the at a Mets-Phils game last year. I am awful at getting autographs because I don’t like bothering people and once you reach a certain age, you don’t want to be confused for those “professional” autograph seekers.
I actually never really ask – though I have had conversations with folk.
Living in an area where rich folk do live (Monteicto) you run into folk in the weirdest places…i was at the deli counter with peter noone once, jay thomas (he played eddie lebeq on cheers) and i debated the ‘film quality’ of santa barbara proper (via steal big steal little, a movie I love) saw jack scalia (is he really a star or do i watch too much tv) at a starbucks once – girlfriend almost ran over jennifer anniston crossing against a red lite and saw the ‘dude’, very scraggly and unkempt at office max getting paper – my coworker was like ‘we should go ask for an uatograph’ and i was totally against it – dudes just getting paper – dressed like a shl\ub – leave him be

That’s cool. We don’t run into too many celebs here, although if I wanted to hang out at Parc in the city I guess I’d run into Reese Witherspoon and the like that are now in Philly all the time filming.
And I totally know who Jack Scalia is, but then again I watch too much TV, so…
What the hell is reese witherspoon doing in Philadelphia?
I thought everyone filmed in Vacouver these days (Vancouver doesn’t even look like Vancouver any more)

She was filming some as yet untitled James L. Brooks film also starring Paul Rudd and Owen Wilson. Philly had been giving huge tax credits to lure filmmakers to the city, but I believe it’s now up for renewal and I’m not sure of the status. There have been quite a few movies being made here the past 5 years or so (and even ones that aren’t directed by M. Night). “The Lovely Bones” was filmed in Valley Forge and Philly (of course, it helps that it’s set in the same locales in the book) and comes out January 2010. It’s cool but at the same time inconvenient, considering Philly is already a fairly inconvenient city in terms of transportation/getting around.
Wasn’t the lovely bones set in wynnewood?
I read the book when it first came out – it’s a shame that the movie really won’t do justice to what the book is :)

Yeah, I think it was Wynnewood, but they do go to the park in it as well. It is such a good book and I don’t know how they are going to capture it, but Peter Jackson’s a decent director so I’ll see it. I don’t like that Mark Wahlberg is the father, though. They originally cast Ryan Gosling, who is a good actor, but he was fired for “creative differences”.
Ryan Gosling isn’t old enough to be the father – plus with all the roles he’s played in the past he really has ‘crrepy vibe’ down pat…mark wahlberg isn’t even the best actor in his family.

Two-sport stars!
Here we have Sixers at Phillies games, Phillies at Flyers games, Flyers at Sixers games, and everyone at Eagles games.
Can’t wait to see who goes to Union games. Center… passes to wing! Back to center! Back to wing! Back to center! Center holds it… Holds It… HOLDS IT!!!
(Always got a kick out of that, even though I genuinely enjoy Futbol.)

Wait – the MLS is expanding?
That seems a sound financial decision.

saw dikembe mutombo (sp) on my plane once
asked the pilot was him, and he got me his autograph, got a photo with mutombo after the flight (while he was on the phone). i looked like a little kid standing next to mickey mouse.
Yeah
Def. Would have just have had all the phillies sign it, probably worth more & a lot less sentimental value for the phills.
Gold-digging wench
"Leave Michael Alone!" - said like that Brittany Spears fan on youtube
Sounds like the girl was misled and/or bullied by the clubhouse staff into turning the ball over.
She was told she would get to meet Howard and he left before she could.
exactly...
while i am against the law suit i could see a few things…
1.it was her and her 15 yo brother that were sent down to the clubhouse
2. plus it was her first game.
3. fugamanuel’s comment
4. you catch a foul ball, won’t you don’t want to keep it (even as an 12 yo)
5. howard could be the new home run king (fastest to 200), greatly inflating the ball’s value
6. don’t fans usually get a whole lot more when making these deals, a bunch of balls, jerseys etc?
Here’s a question I have:
Did the mother ASK for the ball back – or just jump to lawsuit…since the phils were so ready to give it back, it makes me think if they asked they’d give it back as well.
That’s why I think it’s a money grab – not about the ball – about the suit.
Is FuquaManuel very digital?

I thought that was a familiar picture.
No class is boring enough these days to jump out a window – i mean crap – i take classes now with kids who have lap tops open ignoring the prof reading comic books on cdisplay.

You’ve never been to my honors thesis seminar then. It’s a small class, so using my laptop would be a no no.
