NLDS Game Two Discussion Thread, Rockies at Phillies, October 8, 2009

Colorado Rockies at Philadelphia Phillies, Oct 8, 2009 2:37 PM EDT

One down, 10 to go.

The Phillies send 2008 Postseason Hero Cole Hamels to the mound today in Philadelphia in an attempt to gain a commanding 2 games to 0 lead in this Division Series.  The Rockies counter with Aaron Cook.

If nothing else, the Phillies have done better than they did against the Rockies in 2007.  Which I guess is something.

Discuss the game below.

I like our chances against Cook.

I’m generally terrified of sinkerballers, and Cook’s a really solid pitcher, but a couple of things work in our factor: (1) he’s never pitched particularly well against us; (2) he struggles against left-handed hitters, walking more than he’s struck out over the course of his career; and (3) his arsenal of pitches haven’t moved very differently since he’s come back from injury.

Now watch him go out and dominate. That’s why they play the games, right?

the crowd is going bonkers! i dont see how the shlockies could be anything but intimidated right now.

They’re professional athletes and fans don’t have as much impact in a game like baseball as they think…in football there’s a volume to the QB and such – baseball you don’t really need to hear much to play…

Focus, Cole. This is you, right here.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 8, 2009 2:37 PM EDT reply actions

Leadoff basehit. Blargh.

Cole got squeezed on 1-2.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 8, 2009 2:39 PM EDT reply actions

Yup. Hey, as long as Cook doesn’t get that low strike — he lives on that — then fine..

The Bourn Identity.

I fucking hate that.

Michael, not Jason. Bourn did that to Cole three times in September.

I knew yo uwere referring to michael – i just thought you hated the nickname – i didn’t know he did something – at work – no audio or video – no 90 minute lunch :)

Remember all that stuff about Howard working on his throwing in the offseason? Well, he’s totally regressed as the season’s gone on.

by PhillyFriar on Oct 8, 2009 2:41 PM EDT reply actions

Howards fail % on the throw down to 2nd base after a pickoff must be astronomical. Jeez.

Awful start.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 8, 2009 2:41 PM EDT reply actions

At some point, you wonder if he could just throw it to second…

by dajafi on Oct 8, 2009 2:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Hamels, not Howard.

by dajafi on Oct 8, 2009 2:42 PM EDT up reply actions

ESPN radio commented on that yesterday (Berman and some other guy that isn’t steve phillips) and they were saying it’s a harder thing than it looks and that Howard knows even with his improvement he needs to work on that

Don't frack with me or you'll get a punch in the kidneys...you've been warned

by jemagee on Oct 8, 2009 2:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Yup. For someone who has played baseball for the better part of their natural life, mostly at the same position, and is currently a major leaguer, it must be incredibly difficult to throw the baseball 90 feet to second base. If he needs work on it, why hasn’t he done it already?

by FuquaManuel on Oct 8, 2009 2:46 PM EDT up reply actions

if none of his defense had gotten better this season i might say you had a point – however, he’s vastly improved in almost all other aspects of defense

Missed it

What happened on the Helton “sacrifice” that he got on base?

by David S. Cohen on Oct 8, 2009 2:46 PM EDT reply actions

Swinging bunt from Helton, CarGo went on contact. Cole threw home instead of going to first, so safe all around.

by PhillyFriar on Oct 8, 2009 2:46 PM EDT up reply actions

I'll take it for now

…just hope Cole lets that roll off his back and that the O can make some noise.

Too busy “keeping it light” on the bench. ie Not paying attention.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 8, 2009 2:51 PM EDT up reply actions

The more attention Cook pays to Victorino, the more likely Chase gets a pitch to hit.

by PhillyFriar on Oct 8, 2009 2:51 PM EDT reply actions

Excellent. Go ahead and pitch out with Utley at the plate. Give your pitcher less balls to play with.

Given Torrealba’s crappy arm and Cook’s GIDP proclivities, I would put the over/under of “total times Cook throws to first” today well into the double digits.

by dajafi on Oct 8, 2009 2:51 PM EDT reply actions

He’s going to get halfway there this at bat.

by PhillyFriar on Oct 8, 2009 2:51 PM EDT up reply actions

He didn’t even come CLOSE to tagging the bag at 2nd. I mean, I understand the umps give a lot of leeway on that play, but he was 3 feet away from the bag by the time the ball hit his glove.

That’s BS.

Causing Howard to swing and miss at what should have been ball four.

That chaps my hide.

by dajafi on Oct 8, 2009 2:55 PM EDT up reply actions

The strikezone is awful today as well. The 2-0 to Howard was in the same spot as Cole’s 1-2 to Gonzalez.

Another seeing eye hit against Hamels.

Unreal. He’s either going to win the Cy Young with a 25-0 record next year, or blow out his arm trying to do way too much.

Bit of both. First one, then the other.

As FM notes, pitch selection has been bad too. Gonzalez is a talented guy, but with a better approach he’s 0-3 or 1-3, not 3-3. And anytime Norbit homers off you, you’ve done something really dumb.

When my daughter was born in April my wife’s labor was 3 hours long from when she started feeling pain until the baby was born. My daughter was born an hour after we got to the hospital. So… it could’ve come up real quick.

That was a great inning from Mad Dog, even with that ridiculous cutter of his.

Black Taco huh? Wonder what they mean by that…

haha yeah I saw that earlier. Might as well just call it the BBC

by philiafan14364 on Oct 8, 2009 6:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Wow, Tracy did a smart thing there. Damn it.

by PhillyFriar on Oct 8, 2009 6:01 PM EDT reply actions

I say let Francisco hit. Neither Ruiz nor Cairo is notching an extra base hit off Street, and that’s what it would take to score Stairs from first.

by PhillyFriar on Oct 8, 2009 6:02 PM EDT up reply actions

I still let Benny Lava hit here.

by WanderingMoses on Oct 8, 2009 6:01 PM EDT reply actions

Yup. He doesn’t have much of a platoon split, so it makes a ton of sense.

by PhillyFriar on Oct 8, 2009 6:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Let’s get some good ABs here.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 8, 2009 6:04 PM EDT reply actions

Stairs right here.

by dajafi on Oct 8, 2009 6:06 PM EDT reply actions

Come on, Fatso.

Popup in a 3-1 count?

by FuquaManuel on Oct 8, 2009 6:06 PM EDT reply actions

Probably.

Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?

by mikefive on Oct 8, 2009 6:06 PM EDT up reply actions

He’ll hit a homer. I have faith.

That ball hit deep! Way back! You can put it on the boooaaaard...YES!

Long drive into deep right center field! This ball is OUTTA HEEERRRREE!

Shift seems unnecessary.

by dajafi on Oct 8, 2009 6:07 PM EDT reply actions

He can’t hit straight fastballs right down the middle. He’s toast.

by FuquaManuel on Oct 8, 2009 6:08 PM EDT reply actions

Matt, those are the pitches to hit!

I can’t believe Street keeps coming back inside on Stairs. That’s the ONLY place he likes the ball.

by PhillyFriar on Oct 8, 2009 6:09 PM EDT reply actions

Pinch run Cliff Lee?

Not with the way these vapid dunces are calling the game.

He’s right though. Losing Game 2 isn’t the issue — I can live with that. Losing both of your best options to start Game 3 — that’s a big, big problem.

Thank you. It is basically a kneejerk reaction for Jon to disagree with everything I say at this point…so I can live with it.

Not everything, just the off the wall stuff.

by jonk on Oct 8, 2009 6:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Given our up-and-down play down the stretch, and given that God only knows who is going to pitch for us, it’s not that off the wall to say we could be in trouble.

I have faith in our ability as a road team, though. We can get one there and win in five. But I think this series is going the distance.

Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?

by mikefive on Oct 8, 2009 6:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah. But that wasn’t off the wall.

Our best option to pitch game three was wasted, and possibly injured. Our second best option threw 18 pitches.

I’m not feeling as confident about Pedro as you.

by dajafi on Oct 8, 2009 6:20 PM EDT reply actions
