NLDS Game Two Discussion Thread, Rockies at Phillies, October 8, 2009
Colorado Rockies at Philadelphia Phillies, Oct 8, 2009 2:37 PM EDT
One down, 10 to go.
The Phillies send 2008 Postseason Hero Cole Hamels to the mound today in Philadelphia in an attempt to gain a commanding 2 games to 0 lead in this Division Series. The Rockies counter with Aaron Cook.
If nothing else, the Phillies have done better than they did against the Rockies in 2007. Which I guess is something.
Discuss the game below.

I like our chances against Cook.
I’m generally terrified of sinkerballers, and Cook’s a really solid pitcher, but a couple of things work in our factor: (1) he’s never pitched particularly well against us; (2) he struggles against left-handed hitters, walking more than he’s struck out over the course of his career; and (3) his arsenal of pitches haven’t moved very differently since he’s come back from injury.
Now watch him go out and dominate. That’s why they play the games, right?

They’re professional athletes and fans don’t have as much impact in a game like baseball as they think…in football there’s a volume to the QB and such – baseball you don’t really need to hear much to play…

Remember all that stuff about Howard working on his throwing in the offseason? Well, he’s totally regressed as the season’s gone on.
by PhillyFriar on Oct 8, 2009 2:41 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Howards fail % on the throw down to 2nd base after a pickoff must be astronomical. Jeez.
Awful start.

At some point, you wonder if he could just throw it to second…

ESPN radio commented on that yesterday (Berman and some other guy that isn’t steve phillips) and they were saying it’s a harder thing than it looks and that Howard knows even with his improvement he needs to work on that

Yup. For someone who has played baseball for the better part of their natural life, mostly at the same position, and is currently a major leaguer, it must be incredibly difficult to throw the baseball 90 feet to second base. If he needs work on it, why hasn’t he done it already?

if none of his defense had gotten better this season i might say you had a point – however, he’s vastly improved in almost all other aspects of defense

Swinging bunt from Helton, CarGo went on contact. Cole threw home instead of going to first, so safe all around.

I know we’re only through 3 innings, but this is starting to smell like Game 1 of the 2007 NLDS: a pitcher who the Phils have owned throughout his career comes in and twirls a gem.

Bit of both. First one, then the other.
As FM notes, pitch selection has been bad too. Gonzalez is a talented guy, but with a better approach he’s 0-3 or 1-3, not 3-3. And anytime Norbit homers off you, you’ve done something really dumb.
