Around SBN: Nevin Shapiro Vows To Bring Down Miami

Here's a link to my favorite weather site. Current forecast for Saturday night after predicted highs in the lower 30s during the day: "Mostly cloudy with a 20 percent chance of light freezing drizzle and snow. Areas of fog. Lows around 19."

Yes, and looking at what NWS has posted, I’d imagine they will more than likely get the game in. No question it will be miserable baseball weather, though. I wouldn’t look forward to a night of on and off precipitation and 19 degree lows. Brings back memories of a certain game last October…

Oddly, looks like it will be 65 and sunny by Tuesday in Denver. Go figure… is there any way we can blame Bud? Not making the appropriate sacrifices to the weather gods?

Weather in the 20s and precipitation

That makes for a horrible combination. I can’t imagine having to hit in that weather. At least the bats aren’t aluminum!

This is ridiculous. It’s baseball, not football. There is no way a baseball game should be played in temperatures below 45 degrees unless it is in a dome. It’s unfair to the fans who get to watch a crappy product and its unfair to the players who put themselves at increased risk of injury.

ill be there and im excited

And under 45 degree weather in a dome would be even dumber

How excited would you be to watch the game in torrential downpour like we did last year? The WBC screwed up this entire season and playing into November is ridiculous. Either shorten the season or shorten Spring Training.

by doubleh on Oct 9, 2009 3:11 PM EDT up reply actions

+1. This is just not a game designed to play or sit and watch sub-50 degrees. 154 game seasons. Doubleheaders. But fix it.

by Wet Luzinski on Oct 9, 2009 4:05 PM EDT up reply actions

And all the owners have already told Selig they won’t shorten the season because of revenues. So that leaves doubleheaders—do you think the players or owners would agree to more of these? Does it equal less revenue in the long run?

Penalize cold weather teams for not having domes – no playoff games for them – pick neutral site warm weather places of teams with no chance to make the playoffs (you know, like ever team in the NL East but the phillies)

+1, but Selig would never do it.

by doubleh on Oct 9, 2009 4:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Of course not – because it’s a swfitian type proposition.

The only realistic solution is to require domes everywhere (cause the season is getting longer plus the cold weather games early in the season) – or move teams so they are all in temperate weather climates so weather is never an issue.

then we’ve gone through the looking glass, when we require domes to play an outdoor game.

A required retractable roof, maybe. But like that will ever happen at Fenway or Wrigley?

by Wet Luzinski on Oct 9, 2009 5:26 PM EDT up reply actions

REtractable roof is fine – but there are stadiums where it doesn’t get cold that a retractable roof would come in handy due to heat – like in texas.

I just meant some sort of ‘covering’ to account for bad weather…seriously, you’d have no rain outs, no make up games, all the games would get played and no one could bitch about weather

Roofs are expensive.

by taco pal on Oct 10, 2009 6:23 PM EDT up reply actions

In the long term you

A. attract more fans year round because you don’t have to worry about outside temps – bad weather – put up roof
B. Momentum (if you believe such a thing) isn’t delayed thus allowing your oponent to shuffle their rotation due to a snow storm.
C. don’t have to worry about fitting in make up games on off days which inconveniences everyone

Yes I understand that. But the point is not that the benefits can never outweigh the costs, the point is that this particular cost is very high and very substantial and so you need to take it into account. In fact, the cost is so high that it can only really be justified in a few cities where the weather poses a challenge all year round, like Miami or Houston. In cities that just have chilly autumns, it isn’t justifiable. You don’t spend over $100 million just because you might get a rainout or two (or snowout, as the case may be) in October.

by taco pal on Oct 11, 2009 3:52 PM EDT up reply actions

i agree something should be done

As the logic of the playoffs are infreed fundamentally flawed if the league champion is decided under conditions opposite of how the game was meant to be played or how it was played in the regular season. That said, I would be excited if I were somehow watching this game in a snowstorm, as I have yet to have the pleasure of watching a playoff game

I understand

Watching my Phils in the WS for the first time in forever last year far outweighed the inconvenience of possibly contracting pneumonia while waiting out a 3 hour rain delay and having the game end at 1:47am. However, I am insane for my teams.

Not everyone shares our passionate loyalty. MLB needs to be thinking more about the casual fan and how they can build more fans. The NFL knows how to do it.

by doubleh on Oct 9, 2009 4:22 PM EDT up reply actions

you think so?

I have long been confused about the nfls system. Play half the season in nice weather, half in bad. Then the playoffs can he completely manipulated by blizzards up to the super bowl, which then suddenly becomes too important for weather to be a factor.

No

I meant in terms of building a fanbase, not of where/how the game is played.

ah - i missed the transition in your thought

There would be no wind chill, at least.

by taco pal on Oct 9, 2009 3:18 PM EDT up reply actions

If I’m not mistaken, they can turn the heat on in domes to a comfortable temperature. So it doesn’t really matter what temperature it is outside. Hence, “There is no way a baseball game should be played in temperatures below 45 degrees unless it is in a dome”.

I honestly wasn’t making fun of you. That’s what your statement seemed to suggest. Sorry for the misunderstanding

Weather protection

What kind of weather protection is allowed/available for baseball players? Football players have special gloves they can wear to catch and even throw when it’s very cold. Can baseball players have a glove on their throwing hand? Does such a thing exist? (I find it hard to believe it would be helpful, but is it allowed?) Is there a cold weather batting glove? A regular fielding glove with some kind of lining meant for cold weather?

by David S. Cohen on Oct 9, 2009 3:52 PM EDT reply actions

if they can turn the heat on in the dome then why would it be below 45 degrees?

by PhDave on Oct 9, 2009 3:53 PM EDT reply actions

Goddamn!

Unless the game is being played in a dome, baseball should not be played if it is below 45 degrees OUTSIDE.

Fuckers.

Deep breaths. Serenity now.

by taco pal on Oct 9, 2009 4:10 PM EDT up reply actions

If they have a dome why would they play outside?

by PhDave on Oct 10, 2009 1:14 AM EDT up reply actions

Maybe itll get snowed out. Personally, I think thats the best case scenerio for us. Get out of the cold (for a day) and give Blanton another day of rest so he can maybe start.

I don’t have an opinion on him staying behind, actually. It’s not as if he’ll pitch out there, so why go?

Forecast looking even better!

Saturday
Cloudy. Areas of fog with a chance of light freezing drizzle and snow in the morning…then a slight chance of snow in the afternoon. Highs in the lower to mid 30s. Chance of precipitation 40 percent.

Saturday Night
Mostly cloudy. A 10 percent chance of snow in the evening. Lows around 18.

Weather at 9pm EDT

About half hour before would-have-been game time, it’s now 25 degrees in Denver. But at least there’s no wind or precipitation.

So what’s youre saying is they could have played the game?:)
