Rollins, Victorino win Gold Gloves
It's a joke of an award, and I pretty much hate it, but here we go anyway.
Jimmy Rollins and Shane Victorino were named National League Gold Glove Award winners today. It's Rollins' third straight, and Victorino's second.

Talk about trading Victorino
The talk of trading victorino because of the pharm prospects is stupid, I dont think you should give up Victorino for reasons like this. (gold Glove)
by MalibuLSV23 on Nov 11, 2009 9:19 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Bobby Abreu won a gold glove – probably shouldn’t have traded him either.
Not trading a guy cause he won an award is one of the more asinine things one can use as an argument.
Guess we shouldn’t have traded Michael Bourn huh – he won too
Do they release voting results for this – curious if ryan got any?

I can’t find any official vote tallies. The link below from a Dodger’s fan claims he has a source that Hudson won in a landslide, receiving 50 votes to only 17 for Utley and Phillips, although he admits that “Hudson really doesn’t deserve the Gold Glove over Utley.”

Especially when Chase posted a UZR/150 of 11.3 and Hudson came in at -3.7.

I mean the awards always had ‘slim’ credibility but even Phillies fans just had to give up on the award when they gave one to Bobby Abreu right?
by jemagee on Nov 12, 2009 11:35 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
You’d certainly hope so. Although the Phillies themselves don’t appear to overvalue Gold Gloves, i.e. Aaron Rowand.
by Walcott on Nov 12, 2009 11:41 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I was really just curios if maybe Ryan Howard got a pity 3rd place vote or something just because of his improved defense this year.
by jemagee on Nov 12, 2009 11:35 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
There seems to be some sort of internet consensus that Chase Utley was robbed, as elucidated here
I think they’re just jealous.

Victorino is a leader and we are built to win now, why trade him away for a toss up prospect makes no sense
by MalibuLSV23 on Nov 12, 2009 1:25 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Because A. I think you vastly over rate him, B. Taylor is ready, C. the phillies have some major holes to fill now and in a couple years that trading Shane now before he’s exposed could fill
by jemagee on Nov 12, 2009 9:42 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Can Taylor play CF?
Hes pretty big right… or would we move Werth to Center
by Tron79 on Nov 12, 2009 9:58 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
No, he can’t. Yes he’s big. Yes we would.
Trade Ibanez.
by taco pal on Nov 12, 2009 10:27 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Could we even trade Ibanez, we just signed him last year and the market for corner OFs hasnt exactly changed.
by Clyde Simmons on Nov 12, 2009 12:00 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Hasn’t it? Last year Bobby Abreu signed a 1-year deal for $5 million. This year, Abreu signed a 2-year deal for $19 million.
Of course, we wouldn’t get an enormous return for Ibanez in a trade because the package of Ibanez + Ibanez’s contract, while it has some value, is not that valuable. But that necessarily suggests that it isn’t that valuable to us either, so that would be a perfectly fair trade and potentially even an advantageous trade.
by taco pal on Nov 12, 2009 12:13 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Are we even sure Taylor is ready?
Shouldn’t we hold out this season and let Taylor have another year in the minors…
Then we could bring him up if there is an injury, or if he is tearing it up in Lehigh Valley we can find someone in season looking for an outfielder.
by Tron79 on Nov 12, 2009 12:41 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
That’s doable too – my basic tenet is that Victorino has ‘more’ trade value than Ibanez right now – and I think it can’t get any higher due to the visible hype around him.
The return on an Ibanez deal most likely won’t be as good for the long term success of the phillies than Victorino.
by jemagee on Nov 12, 2009 12:50 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I actually agree that trading Victorino would be a good move for us right now. I hate to say it though, cause I love Victorino.
I wish Taylor or Ben Fransico was a lefty so we could do a Platoon.
by Clyde Simmons on Nov 12, 2009 1:17 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I would think it’s easier to find a ‘platoon’ guy in the off season for not too much money than a full time guy?
by jemagee on Nov 12, 2009 1:19 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, thats probably very true…I guess my idea was just to get taylor involved in the big league club the same way we got Werth involved.
I dunno trading Victorino looks very attractive when you consider the depth at the position. But who would you trade him for? Prospects?
by Clyde Simmons on Nov 12, 2009 1:23 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Well i wouldn’t mind some solid prospects, specifically at short and third to start with as I feel BOTH are now or soon to be desperate needs and the phils aren’t exactly deep at either position in the minors.
I don’t know the minors well enough – plus baseball trades are always so weird sometimes
by jemagee on Nov 12, 2009 1:26 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
maybe Victorino for Cain is possible :)
by Clyde Simmons on Nov 12, 2009 7:38 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
Fans in SF wouldn’t be too feliz about that trade… Ever since Bran Torino won the last all-star spot, Victorino has been as popular in San Francisco as he is in LA.
Cain definitely worth more than Shane, and it’s not even close.

See that smile there :) – it means he was kidding.
by jemagee on Nov 12, 2009 10:04 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Despite the smiley, it’s worth pointing out the dispositions of fans around the league every once in a while.
by Phils 2036 World CH on Nov 12, 2009 10:35 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
If a GM does or doesn’t make a trade based on hurt feelings of fans for a meaningless all star voting thing, the GM should be fired…the fans opinions on a player that has nothing to do with how they play is kind of an asinine consideration for making a trade
by jemagee on Nov 12, 2009 10:43 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
That is, of course, an overstatement. It is perfectly legitimate to look at fan opinion to resolve close calls or break ties. The entertainment industry is a service industry. If a team has the opportunity to acquire two roughly equal players for roughly equal prices and one would be more popular with your patrons, then it would be foolish to acquire the less popular one. Of course, the team should acquire the less popular player if he is clearly better on the field or if he could be acquired at a much better value, but everyone knows that.
by taco pal on Nov 12, 2009 10:57 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
The entertainment industry and the sports entertainment industry are two entirely different forms of animal.
If you cast a popular talentless actress in a crap movie – that movie probably will make enough money to make the stuiod happy than if you had cast a more talented but less popular actress in said crap movie.
In sports, you’re less likely to get fans for a crappy team no matter how popular the players are when obtained, and less popular players on a team that are contending for a title will tend to have less impact on attendance.
And in this situation, if all star voting impacts a GM’s decision to make a trade, it’s asinine…
by jemagee on Nov 12, 2009 11:13 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
You’re the one who felt the need to bring in the entertainment indstury as a whole, I thought I’d help you understand the difference…I understand you feel i have nothing useful to add….
by jemagee on Nov 12, 2009 11:22 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
No, you occasionally make worthwhile points around here, although not as frequently as you might think. That said, your last comment above was not logically responsive to my point. Do I need to spell out for you why that’s the case, or are you just going to concede the point?

like Natalie Portman in V for Vendetta?
Sorry I had too
by Clyde Simmons on Nov 12, 2009 12:02 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Well, I personally liked that movie…i was kind of more thinking of casting Jessica Alba in anything…Portman has talent (at least I think she does)…Alba peaked on Dark Angel
by jemagee on Nov 12, 2009 12:05 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Alba is indeed a horrendous actress. Hot though.
by taco pal on Nov 12, 2009 12:14 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Portman is talented. The Star Wars trilogy was a mistake (on many levels), but she has been quite good in a number of other films.

I refuse to acknowledge that Star Wars Episodes I through III ever happened.
by PhillyFriar on Nov 12, 2009 12:24 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I refuse to acknowledge that han didn’t shoot first…only thing worse was what spielberg did in ET making all the guns into walkie talkies, doesn’t work, and looks stupid
by jemagee on Nov 12, 2009 12:26 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
eh, III wasn’t that bad. And I didn’t find Jar-Jar Binks any more annoying that the planet inhabited by cute little teddy bears in Jedi.
Come to think of it, they should have stopped after Empire Strikes Back. That was the pinnacle everything since then has been sub par, comparatively.
by Cormican on Nov 12, 2009 12:36 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Except that it was incomplete – return completes the series and seriously zahns ‘7-9’ series of books is much better than the crap lucas foisted on us in the first three.
Jar Jar was useless in the first one, next couple not so bad cause lucas learned, but again (much like with avatar) it seemed effects were more important than story.
by jemagee on Nov 12, 2009 12:48 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I think Avatar looks terrible (as in ‘bad movie’, not its actual look).
I still hate Return. In part due to the planet of Teddy Ruxpins, but also the weird incest slant still feels kinda icky.
by Cormican on Nov 12, 2009 12:53 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
The weird incst thing yes – kind of creepy except that they didn’t know – so ‘sort’ of ok
and i kind of like the ewoks, cute and cuddly whereas jar jar just made you want to hit things
by jemagee on Nov 12, 2009 12:59 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
thats because Ewoks didn’t talk.
by Clyde Simmons on Nov 12, 2009 1:10 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
And didn’t sound like racist archetypes either when they made their little noises.
Chewy didn’t talk either
You’d think Lucas would have learned a lesson there….

“Chewy didn’t talk either

I personally loved that movie too, and I think Portman is actually a good actress, I just had to say it because of your old photo.

Yeah, that will be back soon, I kind of lost a bet on Sunday night
The cowboy fan would have had strawberry shortcake with the banner cowboys suck it all night long, sadly i loset

yeah I figured that is what it was.

I think Alba peaked on Flipper, actually.

Elija Wood did a dolphin movie too didn’t he?

That kid from free willy peaked in that movie too

“Jump, Free Willy, jump with all your might!”
“Oh no, Free Willy didn’t make it! And he crushed our boy!”
“Aww… I don’t like this new director’s cut.”

why hasn't anyone mentioned trading werth
I much rather trade Werth than Victorino, we could get really good value in return for Werth and his contract is up at the end of the year. If we sign Figgins this off season, we might not have enough money to resign him after 2010
by packimop on Nov 12, 2009 9:29 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Because a lot of people don’t think trading our only consistent right-handed hitter is a good idea. And I’m inclined to agree with those people.
