Yankee win might have to tide us over

It may be awhile before we see another athlete come this way like Jeter, who showed up at spring 15 years ago acting the way every parent would want his or her kid to act on the big stage, and hasn’t changed. The two-strike bunt he tried in Game 2 against the Phillies might’ve been the first dumb thing he’s done, or said, in 15 seasons.

Wipe off your chin, dude.

Jeter

For my money, that bunt attempt pales in stupidity compared to his famous face plant into the stands behind third base in 2004.

At least when Rowand broke his face against the centerfield fence the ball would have been a double or triple had he not caught it.

But in all fairness, Jeter’s “face plant” was not quite as stupid as the face plant by Gus Frerotte.

busted up

Good point about Rowand. I remember the circumstances very clearly because there was a lot of debate as to whether to catch was worth the subsequent injury; if ever there were a circumstance, that would have been it — two outs, bases loaded, a game that appeared by all accounts as if it was going to be shortened by rain. He doesn’t make that catch, they lose the game.

Remember how Rowand’s catch was supposed to save Floyd’s season and inspire the team? They went 5-8 while Rowand was on the DL and Floyd gave up 5, 5 and 6 ER in his next three starts and then was optioned to AAA.

But Rowand was a hero to one and all in Philadlephia for his grititude and rightwayability. He showed both Bobby Abreu and Pat Burrell how baseball REALLY should be played.

I thought that debate was mostly silly. It’s not as if Rowand knew he was going to get hurt in advance. In Jeter’s case, diving into the stands presents an inherent, uncontrollable risk of injury. With a play like Rowand’s, it’s possible to control the level of risk to a degree. He was probably overconfident in his ability to do that successfully, but I don’t think he was doing a rigorous calculation of the costs and benefits.

I’ve come to really dislike the way Rowand has become such a symbol in the war between the dinosaurs and the sabermetric school. I understand that the dinosaurs started it by overrating him, but too many otherwise fair-minded people feel a need to crap on Rowand to “make up for it” instead of just calling it down the middle. The fact is, he was a flawed yet decent player, and the play where he crashed into the wall was neither an act of great virtue nor something to be scorned. It just was what it was.

That play, considered in a vacuum, was OK. But it was symptomatic of Rowand’s defensive style wherein he went balls-out at all times, frequently making the play, but occasionally playing a single into a double or triple. He also had a tendency to cut off the other outfielders even when they might have a better angle for making a throw. I particularly saw him cut in front of Victorino in RF a few times and make a rag-armed throw to 2B or 3B that Victorino could have made much more easily.

Bye Bye Beardo

          Bye Bye Beardo
          Free Agency’s taken you now
          I’ll try Beardo
          To forget some how
          No more sighing
Each time you came to bat
          No more crying
When back on the bench you sat
          Your whiff and your sway
          You super trooper
          There’s nothing left to say
          But Eric you’re a jet
          Bye Bye Beardo

I wish I could say yes, but this caught me off guard – I thought Bruntlett had secured the blackmail material for the off-season.

In that article, it says Walker was removed from the 40 man roster too. Anyone know if hes out the door too?

Lidge.

Bothersome. His manager and team showed him just an obscene, damn-the-torpedoes-obstinant level of loyalty despite the results that any other guy might have been DFA’d for. And that gets rewarded with not a peep about the elbow? I’m sure he had multiple opportunities to say something. Had it been repaired in May he might have been back for the postseason, and the Phils might have won more games too. Like maybe game 4 of the WS.

It is annoying. On the other hand, situations like this can present genuinely difficult dilemmas for players.

True, if he said something, he could have easily lost his job to Madsen or Myers.
