World Series Game Five Discussion Thread, Yankees at Phillies, November 2, 2009
New York Yankees at Philadelphia Phillies, Nov 2, 2009 7:57 PM EST
One thing is for certain: This is the last baseball game in Philadelphia this year.
The Phillies, down 3 games to 1, look to stay alive in the 2009 World Series behind their ace Cliff Lee, who has been virtually unhittable the entire postseason. He'll be opposed by A.J. Burnett, who was virtually unhittable in Game Two.
Keep that glimmer of hope alive.

Cue token “Derek Jeter plays the game the right way” montage.
Would this guy be anything more than “an above average shortstop” if he spent his whole career in some place like, say, Kansas City?

Per radio, “baseball is gonna take a look at all the mound meetings as a result of this WS.”
What rule do you propose? One per PA?
I think one player on the field is elected to get tazered for every visit to the mound lasting longer than six seconds
like the Button, or whatever that movie is. An element of fan choice would be fun too, although it would suck for the gritty subclub of guys like Victorino.

Not on 2 days rest.
But, as has been pointed out, he can go a couple of innings in the pen.
But it’s worthless to talk about this now. Still need to finish this one out and then go for Game 6.
Unless our bats reawaken, no way I take Lee out until he finishes 8 or obviously is losing his stuff. Maybe not even then.
honestly. What’s the hit chart look like for Chooch. Does he ever send hard-hit liners to right?

I just sat here and said to myself, “Of course Hamels is frustrated. He’s had an awful BABIP year that has submarined what would otherwise be a successful season. If you guys, Rosenthal and McCarver, understood what BABIP was, you would know why he was frustrated. But alas, we’re in the pre-Bill James era, so let’s question Hamels’ mental readiness to play baseball.”
I’m a huge Happ fan, but he hasn’t exactly been gangbusters in the postseason, and in the big picture, he’s simply an inferior pitcher to Hamels. I don’t see it as much of a decision, honestly.
It seems kind of ridiculous to use “postseason performance” as an argument in favor of starting Hamels over Happ.
You’re right, and that’s not what I’m advocating. I’m saying that Hamels is a better pitcher than Happ, and Happ doesn’t have anything (i.e. recent awesome performance, facing a lefty-dominated lineup) that would cause me to start an inferior pitcher.
Agree. In 1980 the Phils started a September callup in game 1 of the WS and got a win. Why not a strong candidate for ROY?

Yours? Mine was operated on two months and a day ago. I started regressing symptoms-wise last week—same things going on that I had in my first two weeks of recovery.
you might want to call in tomorrow about that. srsly

I think it's a good time for a day off
get everyone settled down a little, come back ready for Game 6
besides, I could use one from this series
My exam ends just in time to get into the car and find a station that is broadcasting the world series that i can receive (KTAR out of arizona thank you for having a strong night time signal to reach California) and I get to hear the 9th inning and just hope my earlier comment before the game started didn’t come true.
I guess Madson was a better choice than Lidge – but my only ‘confidence’ in winning tonight hinged on Cliff Lee going 9 – I just got home – why didn’t he go nine?

He started to let them get hits and runs were coming in, he lost some of his command and they made him pay for it
Thanks, seeing 6-2 when the first portion of the exam broke was awesome – then coming out after the ‘hands on extra credit’ (lousy reception on campus) and seeing 8-5 i got a queasy feeling

how much time do you have?
It starts with the Victorino soap opera—Charlie lifts him to start T8, sends Lee in to pitch with an 8-2 lead. Lee immediately gets ground ball that Rollins can’t get out of his glove.
Then a bunch of other stuff happened. And we won game 5.

I was wondering why he wasn’t in center, thought maybe the HBP hurt him earlier in the game.
Why pull him if not hurt – and not pulling double switch?

per Manuel postgame press conference, he was unable to grip a bat or a ball. But Vic protested pretty vigorously not to come out.

with Cabrera out, both teams are either out or lose capability of their CF.

Meanwhile, I don’t think Pettitte has been officially named for Game 6. Might be Gaudin

Pettitte was a whiny bitch today I heard (paraphrasin) when talking about the idea of pitching game 6 – I guess Girardi has to consider that if Pettitte feels ‘gassed’ he’ll pitch like it?

Regardless, it sounds like a good situation to us. Either a Pettitte who clearly doesn’t feel up to par or somebody with no experience.

Gaudin stats—keep in mind Girardi moved up CC to avoid pitching him. He’s not bad, but nothing suggests he’s dominant. In the funhouse mirror Gaudin kind of has the Happ role for NY.
Now—close observers of the Phillies know that this means instant doom.

Chollie quote of the postgame press conference: “We don’t have their signs. We’re not stealing their signs. But we are trying.”
All I know is I’m quite glad this didn’t come true
Too easy, give the fans hope, than die in the 9th…more exciting that way
