World Series Game Five Discussion Thread, Yankees at Phillies, November 2, 2009
New York Yankees at Philadelphia Phillies, Nov 2, 2009 7:57 PM EST
One thing is for certain: This is the last baseball game in Philadelphia this year.
The Phillies, down 3 games to 1, look to stay alive in the 2009 World Series behind their ace Cliff Lee, who has been virtually unhittable the entire postseason. He'll be opposed by A.J. Burnett, who was virtually unhittable in Game Two.
Keep that glimmer of hope alive.

Charlie sez: “We’ve blown 22 games that we were leading after 7. That shows something about the resilience of our team.”
Ha! I say, it shows something about the stubbornness (stupidity?) of our manager.

Cue token “Derek Jeter plays the game the right way” montage.
Would this guy be anything more than “an above average shortstop” if he spent his whole career in some place like, say, Kansas City?

Exactly. It’s a fine line — you can’t come out first pitch swinging every time, but the patient tact the Phils took in Game 2 played into Burnett’s “meatballs down the middle for Strike 1” approach.

Oh, great—Rosendouche and the boys commenting on Hamels’ comments.
by doubleh on Nov 2, 2009 10:10 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I just sat here and said to myself, “Of course Hamels is frustrated. He’s had an awful BABIP year that has submarined what would otherwise be a successful season. If you guys, Rosenthal and McCarver, understood what BABIP was, you would know why he was frustrated. But alas, we’re in the pre-Bill James era, so let’s question Hamels’ mental readiness to play baseball.”
by PhillyFriar on Nov 2, 2009 10:12 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I know all about BABIP, but I think it’s simplistic to blame all of Hamels’ problems on BABIP, particularly from late September through Saturday night.
by Jay on Nov 2, 2009 10:13 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
In seriousness, though, who wants to see Hamels start Game Seven, if we can get that far?
by Jay on Nov 2, 2009 10:12 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I mean, if we get that far, who would you suggest as an alternative?
by PhillyFriar on Nov 2, 2009 10:12 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
It is fascinating to me that Happ is so far off the radar.
by Jay on Nov 2, 2009 10:14 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I’m a huge Happ fan, but he hasn’t exactly been gangbusters in the postseason, and in the big picture, he’s simply an inferior pitcher to Hamels. I don’t see it as much of a decision, honestly.
by PhillyFriar on Nov 2, 2009 10:16 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
It seems kind of ridiculous to use “postseason performance” as an argument in favor of starting Hamels over Happ.
by Jay on Nov 2, 2009 10:17 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
You’re right, and that’s not what I’m advocating. I’m saying that Hamels is a better pitcher than Happ, and Happ doesn’t have anything (i.e. recent awesome performance, facing a lefty-dominated lineup) that would cause me to start an inferior pitcher.
by PhillyFriar on Nov 2, 2009 10:19 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
The “something” is Hamels’ recent performance, not Happ’s. Hamels has allowed 25 ER in his last six starts, 28.2 IP. That’s a 7.85 ERA over a long month of starts. At what point do you say, okay, maybe “merely J.A. Happ” would be a better option? 10 bad starts in a row? 15?
by Jay on Nov 2, 2009 10:22 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Agree. In 1980 the Phils started a September callup in game 1 of the WS and got a win. Why not a strong candidate for ROY?

I think who “starts” Game Seven, if we get there, is a non-question. It’s a “bullpen game,” if you consider every pitcher on the roster part of the bullpen.
by dajafi on Nov 2, 2009 10:14 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
While this is generally true, the reality is that trying to cobble together nine winning innings out of relievers (and short-rest starters) is not much of a winning strategy. The starter matters.
