STFU You
Look, some person who is not smart, most people around here probably hate you. You may have hit your wife in public, or maybe you have complained about your role 100s of times, and there might be a reason why people call you a 10 cent head. Maybe I have always backed you, just because I thought you could pitch well or do something else worthwhile.
Since someone like you hasn't done crap for us this year, get the hell out. That bling on your finger, if you were here last year? That is due to Cole Hamels. I know you can't read this you probable illiterate douche, but maybe you can have a team official or somebody else act it out for you.
TALKING SHIT RIGHT AFTER THE PHILLIES WON A GAME TO KEEP FROM BEING ELIMINATED IS RETARDED.
What the hell could possibly go through that air-tunnel in your head where in such euphoria after a big win, the first thought that you maybe had is to deride your teammate or someone you know, regardless of the stupid things he said. I am glad you won't be back next year or sometime in the undetermined future.
[Edit: Sotry made more ambiguous to not to refer to anyone in particular.]

Very glad he’s not coming back next year. I’ll take Hamels over Myers any day.

Playing Devil's Advocate here...
…if Brett did this to annoy or get under the skin of Cole, it’s both classless and detrimental to the team. But if he did it to push him to play better, then I can understand. After all, Jimmy Rollins ripped into Burrell last year for his 0-13 streak in the World Series and it promptly resulted in the at-bat that won us the title…

totally different
Based on what I saw from the WS video last season, Jimmy’s comments were encouraging - “I’m waiting for Number 5 to show up!” Myers was taking a swipe at Hamels’ attitude.

Yeah good point
It surprised me so many people got upset or were confused by it, though. Even Charlie Manuel. It’s pretty clear to me what he meant by wanting the season to be over.

my perspective
I doubt that Myers did it with the intention of helping Hamels do better.
Yet it could very well result in helping Hamels do better.

I mean, who knows what “motivates” certain people? And how do we know they’re better “motivated”? They can locate their fastball better? They don’t give up bloop hits? It’s so amorphous and completely unproveable but still so subject to Monday morning quarterbacking.

Sure, it’s not provable. We can only analogize from our own experiences and from our observations of other human beings. It’s less than science, but it’s more than guesswork. If it wasn’t, then we would have no idea how to connect with people we meet on a daily basis in our everyday lives.
If I had said that some particular strategic decision definitively should be made on that basis, that would have been problematic. But I didn’t, obviously. And I don’t think it’s somehow wrong just to mention that there might be a psychological or emotional dimension to this issue, or to discuss the range of possible impacts that it might have.

No one ever knows do they?
Didn’t myers try to get in a fight with a reporter in the past couple years?
And get arrested for spousal abuse (suspected?)
Maybe he has some impulse control problems, maybe beer shouldn’t be in the locker room, maybe myers should look at how much he’s ‘contributed’ the past 2 seasons to the phillies being good and shut up.
Again, an over reaction from the media after another over reaction to the original comments, not to mention the phillies trying to spin it is ridiculous…oh they were just talking about leaving the clubhouse and myers is quirky and uses the word quit when he means leave, because he likes shakespeare.

Seriously, while I think that the entire City of Philadelphia should refrain from talking about Game 7 unless and until we get there, I’ll break that rule just to say that if we do get to Game 7, I start Hamels and I do it without a second thought. Got to go for the brass ring. Hamels, at his best, is the best option we have. Put him on the mound (with a quick hook).
by taco pal on Nov 3, 2009 11:23 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
I’m honestly glad Myers said something. While I think Myers has done nothing this year to earn the right to step up and rattle Cole’s cage, I don’t think anyone else has earned it or would do it if they did (with the exception of maybe Pedro), so why not Myers? Everyone on the pitching staff has been nothing but nice and comforting to he and Lidge this season, and maybe they need the “Larry Bowa” fire once in a while to wake the hell up.
Hamels obviously needed a wake up call and I hope this is it. And if it’s not, then he can do his soul searching, resting, and developing a few new pitches in the offseason.
And Myers can continue being a little better than mediocre and overpaid in another uniform.

That’s possible too. In my view, it all comes down to whether the “according to…” part of this quote refers to the entire paragraph or only to the last sentence:
Brett Myers and Cole Hamels are friends. They ride together to the ballpark nearly every day. And they did not have a confrontation last night, according to Myers and another team official who was present.
I interpreted it to refer only to the last sentence because Martino presumably has firsthand knowledge as to whether Myers and Hamels are friends. And if they are, that fact changes everything.
Heck, even if their confrontation turned out to be real, it would still change everything. I’ve had lots of confrontations with friends. You get over it.

I’ll take back the angry at Myers part, but the concept is still the same. There are a ton of idiots brewing out there ripping on Hamels and other players on this team, like they just didn’t make their second consecutive WS after winning one. It is aggravating to say the least.

True. Maybe strike-through “Myers” throughout the post and replace it with “Cataldi” or “Eskin” or “Rhea Hughes.” (The part about wife-beating would still be out of place though, I suppose.)

Actually, I am blind in one eye
Yet I can still know that throwing a rookie on the mound for Game 7 of the World Series when he hasn’t pitched since October 31 (and had a 5.4 ERA in that game) probably isn’t a good idea.

easy fellas..
Before you trash myers, maybe we should question the legitimacy of the article. It is in fact a yahoo sports report and the media being the way it is now, facts do not have to be a part of a story when the pressure of a deadline is present. Maybe those exact words were said but I used that comment, “thought you quit” when i played, meaning that I thought the player had already left the field. Maybe this is what was meant by Myers

No, that’s highly unlikely. Both Martino and Zolecki were immediately skeptical of the story – being beat writers, they would actually know what the relationship is between two players who have both been here for a while. They wouldn’t write “they hate each other” but if they did hate each other, you would be able to read it between the lines and there was nothing between the lines in this case.
It seems that there really was a brief moment of tension between them, but that’s not really important – what’s important is the context. The official explanation is a lot more plausible than the catfight theory that was being pushed by the national media and local talk radio, neither of whom have the same vantage point that the beat writers have (and both of whom have a greater incentive to be sensationalistic).
by taco pal on Nov 3, 2009 8:57 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I should give an example. The best one is the one I quoted above from Martino’s blog post earlier today:
Brett Myers and Cole Hamels are friends. They ride together to the ballpark nearly every day. And they did not have a confrontation last night, according to Myers and another team official who was present.
That was the opening paragraph of his post.
A beat writer has two sets of incentives. One, he doesn’t want to piss off the players, because then he won’t be able to get any quotes. But two, he wants to break stories about the players because he’s in the best position to do so, and if he gets scooped, that’ll piss off his editor, which will be even worse for him.
In a situation where a player wants to say something self-serving via the press, the beat writer’s approach is to report it, but at the same time, make it crystal-clear with his tone and word choice that this is only what the player told him, not what actually happened. Otherwise, if the player’s word is disproved later, the writer will look like an idiot.
So if Myers had invented a friendship between himself and Hamels – a statement that Martino would have known to have been false, considering that he sees the players in their element 162 times a year – he would have written something like this:
According to Brett Myers, he and Cole Hamels are friends who ride to the ballpark every day. Myers, along with another team official, also said that Myers and Hamels did not have a confrontation last night.
But look at how different what Martino actually wrote was. He comes right out of the gate with a declarative sentence “Brett Myers and Cole Hamels are friends” – in his own voice, not attributed to Myers. It’s pretty clear that he actually thinks that Myers is telling the truth. If he thought Myers was spinning, he could have written his story a lot more passively (it’s not like Myers is a sophisticated reader who’d be able to tell the difference). Or he could have found the anonymous source who relayed the “catfight” version of the story to begin with, and gotten more detail, made it into a he-said/she-said. He didn’t do that either.
by taco pal on Nov 3, 2009 9:14 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Notice the similarity in Zolecki’s formulation. Here’s the beginning of his blog post:
Cole Hamels and Brett Myers are friends.
They hang out at home and on the road. Hamels occasionally drives Myers to the ballpark. They planned to have dinner tonight with their wives in New York.
“He’s my buddy,” Myers said today.
No attribution to Myers until the third paragraph. By the time you even get to a “Myers said,” you’ve already been told that what he’s going to say is true.
by taco pal on Nov 3, 2009 9:23 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Based on what's coming out today, it sounds like an accidental incident
Don’t have my sources handy (was bouncing through different reports at lunch), but it sounds like Myers hadn’t heard about the brouhaha over Hamels’ comments, and the “I thought you quit” joke is a common one in their locker room. Bad timing + media ticking off Hamels = boom, but once Myers heard why Hamels exploded, he apologized and things are (hopefully) back to normal
