Phillies Pick Up Cliff Lee's Option
Shocking, just shocking news! Full Zolecki tweet: "Phillies pick up Cliff Lee's option. Haven't decided on Pedro Feliz. Have until Monday to make that decision." We've got to hope Ruben Amaro Jr. makes the right call on Feliz and dumps him.

Feliz...
I’m first in line to criticize some of his horrible AB’s, but he’s outstanding defensively.
I’m not a huge fan, but the question is… What else is out there?

He’s not actually ‘outstanding’ defensively any more and he’s trending downwards in that department…the phils should not pick up his option…
Beltre and Figgins are both better options

Figgins
At leadoff would be awesome on this team.

Don't say shit like that...
…you’re going to get everybody all worked up in a tizzy. Dare I dream such things?

Yup – and think if lopes could make him a quality base stealer?

I think he’s going to be overpriced though.

There’s a lot of teams looking at Figgins this offseason. Which may drive up the price to more than he’s worth (more so in the number of years that wil be on his deal than on the actual total $)

Is it realistic to think that the Phils would go after Beltre or Figgins? They are going to be overpriced because of free agency.
Pedro’s batting is abysmal at times but he is still a well above average fielder. I just don’t want to get stuck with another David Bell and sacrifice Pedro’s defense if we can’t sign one of the big fish free agent third basemen. I don’t think Amaro would do that but it is certainly a cause for concern.

Feliz is pretty cheap though, and if it means resigning Lee and maybe some other top notch starters, I would rather the Phillies do that then pay for the upgrade to Beltre or Figgins.
There is a decent amount of sense in trying to get a new third basemen, though, as there are a handful of starting pitcher prospects in the minors aside from Drabek and if just one of them works out pretty well, than getting another top notch starter is not as big a concern.
On the other hand, there arent really any third basemen prospects that are close, so the Phillies are probably going to need to get a free agent 3rd basemen soon anyway.

Pitching prospects are the least reliable in all of pro sports. It’s best to have as many as possible in the hopes one eventually becomes a viable MLB starter. Most end up topping out in AAA, suffering injuries, moving to the bullpen, etc.

Figgins is a beast, Beltre isn’t no slouch either. Both would make very nice additions.

Beltre over Figgins
I love figgins, i really do and he’s a perfect fit for this team. He is also the Swiss Army of utility players. Literally has and can play every position but catcher and 1st base. Managers have gotta love this guy but it’s also what will make him expensive esp. relative to where he is in his career, the beginning of the decline from his apex.
Feliz is above average in the field and Beltre can flash the leather. Feliz ’s defense is sliding and it can no longer justify his lack luster bat.. I believe if he gets more rest his hitting would improve but his back surgery seems to affected his mobility in the field

Gotta agree with ByeDawk here.
I can live with the bat because I love the glove. I’d hate to end up with a lesser option at 3rd.

This was just short of a metaphysical certainty, but still… glad to hear it.

what about derosa
I just saw on espn.com he will be available? He is able to play plenty of other positions as well to give other guys a day off and have dobbs take a game at 3rd if he is back?

Something clearly seemed physically wrong with Myers this season and parts of last season. His velocity was down and his location was spotty.
I guess it would have been worth offering him arbitration, but then again, I hated him so much that I’m kinda glad to see him gone.

Worthy of its own post, I think.

figgens and beltre sound like great additions, they can both hit better than feliz, but defense wise, i dont know
eff you we winning anyway

Beltre is a terrific third baseman. Figgins is also very good. We wouldn’t be downgrading at all.

any chance we pick up the option and see what we can get for him? I feel like there may be a couple teams interested in a 5mil feliz.
by char6587 on Nov 7, 2009 11:26 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Correct me if I’m wrong but if we don’t give the $5M option then we are buying him out for $500k? It seems like a risky move to not exercise the option. You could basically look at it as needing to find a team interested in a $4.5M Feliz.
by andyreidswaistline on Nov 7, 2009 3:21 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
If I were some other team, I wouldn’t pay $4.5M for Feliz. You can probably find someone in the dumpster who’s roughly as good as Feliz.

If there is an upside to losing game 4
it is that it did not turn Feliz into a folk hero that had to be retained for another year. Do not forget to thank Lidge for blowing that hold.
