Myers Won't Be Back
The part of me that remembers he's a person says "good riddance." The cold-blooded GM wannabe, though, wonders if a low base, make-good deal to bring him back as a fifth starter might not have been a better way to go. Remember that the most likely alternative in-house options are Jamie Moyer and Kyle Kendrick.

I really like his parting commentary. That’s good stuff.
I’d expect him to end up in ATL or somewhere closer to home for him (probably not TB). He doesn’t seem to be a west coast kinda guy.
“okay, thanks for putting up with my (stuff)”? It is classic. He may not be west coast, but he’ll go wherever the money takes him. Wonder what team out there is equipped to put up with his “(stuff)”…

Good Decision
Forgot all the stuff about him as a person, but considering next year he would be probably be at best the third starter (after lee and hamels, and possibly happ and blanton ) versus the amount of money he gets, its just not worth it.
I personally think it was motivated more due to performance than personality (of course, I’m just speculating). Also, does anyone think there would be a call-up of Drabek anytime soon?

Well they could always invite him to spring training and see how he does. Also, to clarify, I meant anytime soon as during the 2010-2011 season.

Good business decision
but the prank he played on kendrick a few years back is one of the funnier clubhouse moments i’ve seen.
Hopefully I’ll be playing against the Phillies and when I do I want the roughest treatment the fans can give me – when I’m pitching. I’m an opposing player – you have to give it to me.
I love that quote.
I hope he pitches against the phillies often as well – with his propensity towards suckage

You know, the Mets looks like they need a starter since after Santana, you can’t expect much from Perez, Pelfrey…or well anybody really. I’ll love to see the reaction if he comes back to Citizens Bank Park as a Met.

Man is omar THAT stupid? I mean signing Myers is one thing, but as a starter – that’s just stupid

I think his future is as a closer, which he claimed to have preferred anyway. Cubs, maybe. Angels and Tigers are also possible.
Myers at the Angels
At 29 he’s got alot left in the tank if sent to a club with real pitching acumen, you might see a different pitcher. It’s the organization’s fault for not recognizing that he has number two or three stuff and thinking of him as a number 1.
We play in a band box and have a rotation of primarily fly ball pitchers and we signed Moyer for whatr three years…Just saying we are not the sharpest knife in the drawer when it comes to pitching. We have Lee and thank god he has a cutter and a two seamer because before he really developed them he was a fly ball pitcher that put up horrendous numbers in hitter parks. And let’s face it once the league picks up on that 88 mph invis-a-ball, that get me over slider and change-up aint gonna cut it for Mr. Happ.
What does this even mean?

Now thats a bit far-fetched i know, but if you want to root against him…i can’t think of a better team for him to be on.
Of course I won’t put it past Minaya.

Omar has Oliver Perez. He doesn’t need two. And Myers doesn’t really help him beat the Phillies, whose big lefty FB bats would kill him.
If I were him, I’d be looking for a division with big parks (NL West), and a team who would be willing to do a sucky years, possibly ok money kind of deal. San Diego would be ideal and he might be able to trade on his “been on a winner/playoff experience” cred, but they have no money. SF possibly. The point is I’d work my butt off in those two years to reinvent myself.
That said, he’s a meathead, he’ll sign with the Cubs. Possible wildcard: The Ed Wade factor. Houston may not need him, but has that stopped Ed from signing a reliever? I think we all know the answer to that…
I hear rumors that Seattle has a big park.

The wife-beating thing...
In fairness to Myers, maybe she sassed him. We may never know. Haha, just kidding
Anyway, I couldn’t care less about the off-the-field stuff if he can get guys out, but the fact is that his numbers have gotten progressively worse every season since 2005. This is the right move.
His AB against Sabathia last year may very well be one of the greatest moments in Phillies postseason history, and I loved how he set the tone in the LA series last year by throwing the ball 8 feet behind Manny, but it’s time to go. Farewell, BM.
I should say that I think it’s possible for anyone, even wife-beaters, to become reformed and rehabilitated. I’m not vouching for Myers by any means, but just as a general principle I think it’s better to hope that he’s changed than to hope that he suffers.
Yelling at the reporter two years ago, his run in with cole (however they spin it after the fact) are not good ‘indicators’
PS – Stark Believes that the phils will pick up the Feliz option and Blanton is at arbitration – says they’ll be at 115 million for 12 players.
Um….that seems high

115 sounds about right. I hate the fact that they’re spending 1.2 million in 2010 on Geoff Jenkins. It’s not much, but I hate the principle of it.
Stark also said the philes probably won’t be in the figgins sweepstakes
but said he expects the phils to be big players in the roy halladay FA sweepstakes (if he hits) next off season (but that trading for him makes no sense)

He has had his problems but everyone has problems. I dont have any animosity towards him at all, but he was making a lot of money. Even if he accepted a lower salary, there isnt a whole lot of room for him on the team. Lee, Hamels, Blanton, Moyer and Happ are probably more or less going to be the starters, with Kendrick and Drabek likely to replace anyone who performs poorly. If Myers took a 1-3 year deal for like 2 million a year or something, so he was a presumably decent bull pen arm, sure, bring him back. But he isnt that bad of a starter and someone will probably pay him like a 3-4 starter money, at least.
There simply isnt a spot on the team for him with the kind of salary he is likely to make.
Rich Hoffman throws in his two cents and says the Phillies should trade for Halladay.
Apparently, he doesn’t want them to include Hamels in the deal though, because he contemplates that Hamels will be part of the post-Halladay rotation.
In fact, the column contains practically no discussion of what we should give up in order to make the trade. I guess that half of the transaction isn’t important to Hoffman. Overall, it’s pretty terrible work.
It’s going to get really annoying with Halladay talk again this offseason, although I suppose that without a set deadline it will never reach the absurd fever pitch it got to in late July.
Generally, I like Hofman’s work, too, but you’re right; it was a bad piece. I don’t see any way the Phillies make a trade like that. If anything, they’ll pick someone up in free agency, but even that I’m not entirely convinced about.
Agreed. I think there’s a pretty good chance they’ll stand pat on their rotation.
I think Hoffman is a mixed bag generally. These types of opinion pieces just piss me off to no end. How can you ever advocate a trade when you only know what one side of the transaction would be? The whole idea is fundamentally flawed.
Trading for halladay and NOT signing him to an extension is a horrible premise in my opinion

I think that the most interesting thing in this article is the blurb about Lidge at the bottom.
He may have “loose bodies”. For those who thought he sucked for headcase reasons, you may have to rethink
that position.

I think anything posed by reporters now is speculated guessing at best. Nobody is showing their hands this early in the process.
All the sports writers had left over Halladay material after the Phils didn’t get him, so now they’re just re-treading it.
I’ll pull for Myers on his new team, unless we’re playing them or jousting in the standings, ala Randy Wolf. I’ve got no hatred. Don’t approve of the wife smackdown, but I have to hope that was the only time he did it.
O.K., I'll put it out there: The Where Will Brett Myers Wind Up Sweepstakes?
I’ll priority mail the first correct prognosticating regular poster (I must recognize your name; you must reply to this comment) four boxes of your choice of Tastykakes if you can guess which Major League team Brett Myers will sign with this off-season. One guess per entrant. Once a team is picked, sorry, you’re SOL.
mmm, Tastykakes

This is true, but you’ve got to start the rebuild some where and I don’t see too many teams dropping serious coin for Brett.
You don’t rebuild with a closer though :) Or a ‘8th inning guy’ you get scrap heap guys who dont want long term deals until you matter :)

Brett wants another starting position, he could find a less than successful organization to pay him (not what he thinks he’s worth) for a starting position. We all know he still thinks of himself as a starter.
He doesn’t strike out enough (at the plate)

White Sox
I wouldnt put this as my top choice, but a lot of other ones were already chosen. I think White Sox GM likes to gamble a bit and their team isnt all that far away from post season stuff etc. The White Sox dont have a lot of money, but they have a decent amount and Myers might fit in well with there needs and his costs.
I didn’t think the twins were a stupid organization

Anyone else think Joe Blanton was probably the happiest person on the team when Cliff Lee came over? “Thank God, there’s a southern guy here who’s not a complete jackass that I can hang out with now.”

Late to the party here, but this was my initial reaction as well.
If not Myers, then I hope the organization does take a flier on a starter coming off an injury who’s willing to sign an incentive-laden deal. Names like Erik Bedard, Justin Duchscherer, and Ben Sheets spring to mind there.
