Predictions of minors call ups' for next year

whats going on guys? my first post here (obviously im on bleeding green), but i wanted to bring up some of the phillies minor league tallent. Who do you think will come up? and what predictions of them do you have?... this is also baring any trade speculation.

-honestly i  am starting to think that Drabek is ready to be a fifth starter. it pains me to think Moyer will be starting again next year (although i have the utmost respect for him). I believe the rotation of Lee, Hammels, Blanton, Happ, Drabek has the "potential" to be a great one. i put that in " " because it depends on how Drabek can pitch in the majors and if Happy can not have a sophomore year slump.

-between brown and taylor i feel that one of them is ready to make an impact on our roster. I was also hoping they would do a platoon between Ibanez and one of the two during the season like they did with Werth/Jenk.

beside that i thought the season was great guys. while i am disheartened that they lost the world series it puts a chip on our shoulder next year. GO PHILLS!!

what about mayberry?
he was pulled up to the big leagues for a little bit but didnt seem to amount to much after his initial few game when he hit some homeruns.

What do you mean you’re “starting to think that Drabek is ready to be a fifth starter”? He was shut down in mid-August so he hasn’t even done anything in the last two-and-a-half months. If you didn’t think he was ready before, why would you change your mind now? I think what you really mean is that you’re starting to feel more inclined to try something new in the rotation, so you’re starting to convince yourself that Drabek is ready even though you really have no idea one way or the other.

If you have a factual basis for what you’re “starting to think” about Drabek instead of just vague feelings, please explain it and prove me wrong.

LOLOL

really dude? starting, i said none of that on a factual basis. your quote has the words “i think”. it was just an idea to toss around im sure they will bring him in for spring training to see how he does. and im sure that even if he was shut down early hes not sitting at home eating up some burgers and fries flaming people on the internet.
in the end i made this post to spark a conversation about the minors. im no minor league scout and i have no aspirations to be, but with pedro & myers gone there is definaly an open spot in the rotation i feel moyer is not the best to fill. if you think differently you could have said that in about a sentence, but that may be me…
now on topic who does everyone think will be in the running for that 5th spot. as far as I THINK it would be bastardo, moyer, drabek i apologize for left out names.

Not worth it.

Mayberry was called up b/c Ibanez was hurt and it was interleague time.
Drabek hurt.
The Werth/Jenkins platoon only served to further delay Werth’s stardom.

totally agree werth starting was the best move the phillies made this year and ibanez was good but when he gets cold its like a witches tit maybe someone pushing behind him will give him an edge.

Taylor should be the first to get the call if/when any of the outfielders misses significant time (which is likely).

Agreed as well.

Drabek is in no way, shape, or form ready to start next year in the majors. Personally, I’d start him in Reading and move him up to Lehigh Valley when he’s ready. Unless he’s absolutely unhittable in the minors, I don’t think about calling him up until September.

The prospects I can see earning promotion next year include Taylor (as WC alluded to above), and Bastardo and Mathieson in the bullpen. Drabek may get a cup of coffee in September, and there’s an outside shot that some bullpen guys like Michael Schwimer and B.J. Rosenberg could force their way into the picture with a few dominant months in AA/AAA.

Mathieson looks like he’s doing pretty well outside of one bad outing last week in AZ. Any further info? Still throwing mid 90s with a franken-elbow?

I saw him hit 98 at the R-Phils this year once. Of course the ball went over the hitter, over the catcher, over the ump to the screen. Ump must have said something to him after the inning because they shared a laugh. He was working around 95-96 most of the time though. I can’t imagine he’s not in the pen to start the season. For all else, I see things mostly like Governator below.

Projected call-ups

Taylor will be up whenever Ibanez inevitably breaks down

Brown will only be up if he tears the cover off the ball in AA/AAA AND there are injuries AND Taylor is out of the picture for some reason

Bastardo and Mathieson in the ’pen for sure. maybe Rosenborg or Schwimer if injuries necessitate a call-up.

Drabek if he is Hamels-esque at AAA or if two starting pitchers go down ahead of him (Kendrick and Moyer/his replacement)

That’s basically it.

Probably won’t see Drabek in Philly until after July, at least until the trade deadline is over in 2010 and even then he may not get called up next season.

I understand where you’re coming from. This is a kid who was a big part of a potential trade to acquire Roy Halladay. You want to know what Drabek is capable of since Amaro and co. didn’t pull the trigger for Roy.

We’ll all just have to wait until spring training to get a closer glimpse of all those guys that were almost part of the Halladay deal. OR you can take a trip to Reading and Lehigh.

The Phillies have handled Drabek perfectly so far. They shouldn’t rush him, there’s no need to rush him, he’s young and still recovering from major arm surgery.
