I'm tired of the money argument.
I am a Phillies fan, but I am tired of the Yankees spend too much argument. I am only tired of it, because I see fans on here wondering what the Philies are going to do at third base and pitching. Our fans have poured millions and millions of dollars into that stadium the past five years. The Owners can't use that small market nonsense anymore. Just off the money they made this postseason they should be able to lock up Lee and make a run at Lachey, and overpay for Figgins. Instead of complaining about how the Yankees spend too much we should be complaining that our ownership is still to stingy. I don't want to hear the lame argument that revenue is not garanteed, and how the postseason is not a garantee. We are not Pittsburgh, We are not going to go away if we have a down year or two as long as we know the ownership is making efforts to give us a winner. In the down years the Vet was a toilet and the ownership bailed out on all of us. They said they needed a stadium and they got it.
If you take a number like 70 dollars for a playoff ticket and multiply it by 45,000 and multiply that by the 8 home games. That's 25 million, there is probably another 12-15 million in concessions, and another 60 million in merchandise, I am sure there is money from FOX and TBS. They should spend it, the Yankees do.
The other end of this argument is as much as it sucks too watch the Yankees buy title after title it is way better to watch them lose to the Marlins and the Diamondbacks.

Wow
1. Do the owners still claim to be small market team considering a $130+ million dollar payroll? Who would believe that?
2. Who is Lachey? Nick Lachey?
3. Read this by Joe Posnanski:
“But the Yankees are a whole different argument. They are their own argument. The Yankees are not a big-market team. They DWARF big-market teams. They are quantitatively different from every other team in baseball and every other team in American sports. They don’t just spend more money than every other team. They spend A LOT more money than every other team. The Boston Red Sox spend $50 million more than the Kansas City Royals? Who cares? The Yankees spend $80 million more than the Boston Red Sox.”
That’s a bit more convincing that your simple arithmetic.

Sorry Lackey.
I know the argument. It sucks that the Yankees can and do spend so much, but it is what it is. I just feel that the Phillies are the better team even with the smaller payroll and with some tweaks they will be the dominant team over the Yankees. So instead of worrying what the Yankees spend the Phillies should just go out and spend this offseason. Take the money that the fans poured into this team and make it even better.

This isn’t a real post, is it?

Yes its a real post. Let me explain from a different perspective. I am not claiming that the Phillies can spend as much as the Yankees even if they wanted to. I am a hockey fan first. I don’t want to see major leauge baseball institute a salary cap. As much as I despise Yankee fans and their smug attitude, at least they are true fans. They are definately there in the good times, but even though there have been many they are also there in the bad times. I don’t want reward fans of these “small market teams” that never show up. Five years ago before Crosby and Malkin were drafted by Pittsburgh you could walk up to Mellon arena 10 minutes before the game hand the the person behind the glass twenty dollars and sit right on the ice. This was a time in the season when there was no football, no baseball, and no NBA. Now you can’t go anywhere near that city without them idiots claiming how they are the greatest fans in the world. Sporting news ranked them number one. Why should a system exist where an owner wants to spend the money and can’t because other owners want to add to their bottom line at the expense of the fans. Before the NHL lockout Snider was the Steinbrenner of hockey, had he brought in Homer to replace Clarke with that system in place who knows we could be hockey town instead of Detroit.
I hate the Yankees and all 27 of their world titles. I hate their fans that think something is owed to them because they are the Yankees, but if their ownership is willing to spend it is up to our ownership to bring in the pieces we need to defeat them. I just dont want to hear that the money is not there. Had the Rays fallen to the Red Sox, and the Red Sox beat us last year and we were staring down the barrel of two consecutive world series defeats to the two teams with the two largest payroll and we are the 4th largest market we would be demanding that the owners increase the payroll. That is not what happened we defeated a team with half our payroll and lost to a team that doubles our payroll. I don’t expect the Phillies to go out and spend a half a billion dollars in this off season. They don’t have that many needs. They need some bench help, they need a a number 2 or 3 starter in case Cole does return to the form that everybody just assumes he is going to. And they need 1 or 2 arms in the bullpen. with those additions i could live with Feliz at third. If they had some help on the bench you could pinch hit for Feliz in some of those crucial at bats. I have not given up on Feliz just yet. I don’t know this Figgins guy from Adam. The only thing I saw of him was this postseason.
I just don’t want a salary cap. As much as this defeat hurts it would hurt even more to watch Utley have to leave town, not because he declined in skill, but because there wasn’t enough room under the cap. It was only 3 or 4 years ago that we were demanding that silent owners stand up and take responsibility. The phillies don’t have Yankee money, but there is money available to fill the small holes that need to be filled to take down the big bad Yankees, and we still all crow about how our payroll is 3/5 the size of theirs. Lets go out and spend and make it 27-4 in the next 2 or 3 years.

a few things here...
Saw some good points last few days from ESPN
1. Yankees have the money – so spend it (garnered through their own market, YES, ownership, etc)
2. MLB is not really holding anyone accountable besides a tax. It is not as strict as a salary cap, however, yankees get rid of draft picks by signing so many free agents.
O, and no one talked about how the Phillies outspent the Rays last year. But like someone said, the Yanks outspend the R’Sox by 80 million.
As your resident Angels fan, I am very hesitant about both Lackey and Figgins. Lackey has not performed well in big game situations from 2004 to 2008. However, he did pitch amazing in game 7 of world series in 02 and in alcs/ds in 09 (he lost game one of alcs because of the angels fielders). With Figgins, he is a super utility player but has mainly played third (he can play the outfield as well), but he cannot lead off, something the Phils definitely need. He is very good defensively however, he is very streaky at the plate. However if either one signs with the Phils, I will buy their jersey.

why can’t Figgins lead off?

He’s either on fire or real cold at the plate, never a middle of the road batter. Other than that I think he would still make a damned good lead off man for the Phils. Not to mention we wouldn’t have to take a hit on the defensive side to grab a better bat than we already have at 3rd.

Oh i see the ‘streak’ argument…i get it

doesn't take many pitches
he did a lot better this year (thanks to abreu), but i would rather have him as a number 8 hitter in the nl (guy who can move runners up to where the lineup turns over). like JCB79 said, he is either really hot or cold.
He is 31 years old (b. 1978), and will probably want a 5 year deal (I am taking a shot in the dark, but that leads him to 36 when his numbers will decline). Don’t the Phillies have a good 3b in the minors (or converting to a 3b)?
Part of my hesitation is wanting a team to get younger esp if they have guys in the minors waiting to go (unfortunately you do get a 4A player (ie. Marlyn Byrd))

o and i am called it on halos heaven (angels blog)
abreu will fall dramatically in ‘10. He was in a contract year in 09, plus he was playing to prove he could play. No one gave him an offer until February (when the Angels signed). That and I privately called Pat the Bat’s rise in 08 and fall in 09 (like what he did in his previous contract year with the Phils)
