Miguel Cabrera To Phillies?!?!?
If Detroit is willing to listen to trade offers for MIguel Cabrera, in order to free up some salary, why don't the Phillies think about going after him then? The Phillies are in need of a third baseman and Cabrera has played most of his career in that position. You might ask how could this be possible considering how much Cabrera is making and how the Phillies have limited spending this off-season.
The Phillies could consider trading Raul Ibanez or Jayson Werth and a maybe even a lower level prospect to Detroit for Cabrera and a little cash. Ibanez's contract expires in two years and is making $10 million less per year over the next two years. Ibanez gives Detroit a viable bat in their lineup plus has the option of being a DH in the AL. Werth will be a free agent after next year, which leads me to believe he will hit the free agent market and finally get that giant pay day. It also makes sense for Detroit to even try to sign him for a few years before he reaches free agency considering the Curtis Granderson trade rumors and Magglio Ordonez's age.
The Phillies are looking to fill their third base void. They seem to be pursuing Adrian Belte the hardest of the third base free agents available. Based on my readings he will earn $5+ million per year. I would much rather have Cabrera's bat and the extra 10 or so errors at third compared to what Beltre brings to the table. Use that money for Cabrera and trade away Ibanez ($11.5 million) or Werth's ($7.5 million) contract. Why not have Michael Taylor or Dominic Brown play the outfield versus the Phillies watching their talent go to waste in the minors like they did with Utley and Howard. They both should have been playing in the majors years beforehand, but couldn't due to Polanco and Thome. They are in the same position now with their 3 current all-star outfielders. With trading Ibanez the Phillies would only need to cough up an extra $5 or so million and around $8-10 million for Werth. Based on dollars alone for the 2010 season, it makes more sense for the Phillies to trade Ibanez. Werth, however, probably has more trade value because of his age, expiring contract, and the ability to play all 3 outfield positions.
Now lets consider the long term future of the Phillies. In two years Ryan Howard will be a free agent. As hard as it is to say he can no longer be a Phillie. Miguel Cabrera can then move over to first base for the last 4 remaining years of his contract, in which he will be entering the prime of his career (as crazy as that sounds). Howard is one of the premier players in this league, but Cabrera is no slouch and is 4 years younger than Howard.
This is all hypothetical, but if the Phillies cough up a little money they will have the scariest infield in baseball for the next two years, plus have the term stability to continue to be a power house in baseball. The Phillies say they want to win now, but the door is slowing closing, which is why they need to bring in one of the games best.

There is no way the Tigers would want Ibanez.
Werth and a “low level prospect” would not be nearly enough to get Cabrera. Brown, Taylor, and/or Drabek would almost certainly have to be involved.
Trading Werth wouldn’t change the fact that we’d have about $77 mil tied up in only 5 players in 2011. Say goodbye to Cliff Lee, Shane Victorino, or any hope of getting pitching help.
Taylor and especially Brown aren’t ready yet.
Expiring contracts don’t add value to a trade. This isn’t the NBA.
Cabrera + Taylor vs Beltre + Werth would be practically a parallel move for 2010. Cabrera posted a 5.4 WAR last season. Werth had a 4.7. Beltre is worth at least 0.7 more wins than an unproven rookie (he had 2.4 in last year’s injury plagued year. Ranged from 3.0-4.6 in the previous 3 years). Beltre + Werth is arguably more valuable than your scenario and would come with less salary.

While I’m all for trading Ibanez, it’s gonna take a lot more than just him and a “lower-level prospect” to get Cabrera. Just sign Beltre and move on. And if you can trade Ibanez later for pitching or infield prospects, go for it.

Worth noting that Cabrera has played only 14 games at 3B (all in 2008) since the Tigers picked him up (and made 23 errors there in 2007 for the Marlins). I think that’s the big key to this, beyond the fact that they’d have to give up a ton more than just “Werth and a low-level prospect” — he’s not really a 3B anymore & we definitely don’t need another 1B.
*sigh*

"they’d have to give up a ton more than just 'Werth and a low-level prospect'".
Maybe not, arent the Tigers trying to sell parts? Im not saying that Werth and a bum prospect would get the deal done, but I do think that might be in the ballpark.

The Tigers are also very competitive in a terrible division and Ilitch seems devoted to fielding as good a team as he can afford for the city he loves. You’d need to give up, at least, Werth and a top prospect like Taylor. Be prepared to discuss taking Dontrelle Willis off their hands too.

"The Phillies are in need of a third baseman and Cabrera has played most of his career in that position"
Stopped reading there. When the Tigers got him, it took them exactly 19 games to realize he had no business being at the hot corner.

Do we want a guy who got drunk several hours before his team's most important game of the season?

cabrera
You could get cabrera on the cheap. this only based on detroit saying they want to dump salary and cabreras drinking issue..i mean i dont blame him for drinking..i would too if i lived in Detroit..plus it makes sense for them since they have the opportunity of resigning werth or not..granderson will probably be traded, their left fielder probably cant even play for the mets thats how bad he is, and mags is ancient..love howard but cabrera is 4 years younger and just entering what most consider the prime of their careers but you have them two together for the next two years.
I realize Cabrera is owed that much but that makes no difference if howard signs elsewhere in two years and makes the same money or maybe even a lil more the next four years..they have two studs playing in the minors who would make league minimum..give one of them a shot..werth is going bye bye after next year so trade him..phillies should cough up the extra $7 million dollars this year..thats the difference between what cabrera makes and werth contract and the $6 million blockhead is making now..im sold on this michael taylor guy..i think hes ready and can be a solid contributor this year if given a shot..its the same situation that happened with utley and howard and i dont think it should go to waste.

There is nothing cheap about a guy who makes $20 million dollars a year. Nothing at all.
Also, I don’t know if you remember this or not, but the Tigers were being tabbed as the team who would score over 1000 runs after they obtained Cabrera. That didn’t happen, they missed they playoffs.

Who said they would score 1,000 runs?
I find it difficult to imagine that any quantitative analysis would have resulted in that prediction.
