Phils Invite Seven to Spring Training

Well, seven so far--usually the non-roster invites pile up as the winter wears on. This first bunch includes two returnees, C Paul Hoover and 1b/3b Andy Tracy; recent pickups OF DeWayne Wise and 2b/ss Wilson Valdez; ex-Yankee utilityman Cody Ransom as well as outfielder Chris Duffy and lefty pitcher Bill White.

Wilson Valdez started 23 games last year for the Mets at SS, finished the season batting .256 in 86 at-bat’s. Ransom had a nice 08 season as a utility infielder for the Yanks, batting .302. We’ll have to wait n see what Ruben & Charlie’s intentions are & what they can do for the team.

That there are tons of guys out there of the caliber of Valdez and Ransom that will sign non-guaranteed contracts only makes the Castro signing all the more strange. If you’re not going to sign a clear upgrade (like Craig Counsell, Jamey Carroll, or Jerry Hairston), then there’s plenty of freely available talent that can provide the same thing Castro will.
