Lee Wanted to Finish in Philly
Well, I loved Cliff Lee as did thousands of other Phillies fans. But I guess in the end this is a business, but I want to put an end to all the "Cliff Lee demanded his way out" crap. Halladay is going to be great, I know it, but I hope, I HOPE this was the right decision for the future of this team. Going over the trade, it just keeps popping into my head that the loss of Lee is going to affect us not only this year, but especially in 3 years time, when Drabek would be starting for us. But that is another story. Goodbye Cliff, I miss you already, you etched yourself as my favorite Phillie last year because of your will to win and your skill. We DO have Halladay which is FREAKIN AWESOME! But I guess you cant have everything. I just hope that after we win the 2010 World Series we will be able to retain Howard and Werth for the 2011 season.

on ESPN it says Lee tried to counteroffer a contract extension...i think he decided at the last moment on Wednesday when he was traded he wanted to resign with philly at least thats what ESPN says
too bad Lee… i liked u but u did too little too late
Holladay is gonna get us that championship
eff you we winning anyway
Lee goes on ESPN spins the trade to make it seem like he’s the wounded party.
And people still buy it?

why do you find that disingenuous? I’m sure he feels that way.

Because it’s the same thing almost every player going into the last year of his contract that gets traded says.
I’m sure he doesn’t really care so much as long as he pitches well next year (and remember SAFECO is huge) and gets a big contract in the off season.

Halladay
Halladay is a slightly better pitcher, but, for now at least, Clif Lee was part of one of my favorite Phillies games. Game 1 of the World Series this year. I’ve never seen a performance like that. That behind the back catch and the nonchalant popup catch alone were worth 4 moderate minor leaguers, for my money.
Look at it this way
If Lee was going to sign for a large amount of money on an extension & the Phillies were going to also go for Halladay, why not use Lee to get Halladay & if possible sign Lee at the end of the year for the same amount you would have given him, but if Lee was to try free agency at the end of the year & ended up leaving, using him to get Halladay & signing Halladay to an extension locks up an #1 starter for a few years & allows Amaro the trouble of going out and looking for an Ace at the end of the season & all the potential ridicule if he was unable to get a good starting pitcher.
We still have a good farm system & overall have a young team.
Ibanez & Rollins are the two oldest position players that we have & they could easily play for 3 more years. Howard & Werth maybe hard to keep around money wise in two years, especially Howard, but besides them, Victorino, Utley, Ruiz, & even Palanco could stay with the club for several years. Hypothetically we have at least 2 years to draft & trade to get our farm system in a great position to systematically materialize together with our major league roster as need be over time. Pitching wise Halladay, Hamels, & Happ could be starters for several years, personally I’m still hopeful Kendrick can return to pitching like he did when he was first brought up. The forth & fifth spot in the rotation whether it Blanton, Kendrick, Moyer, Pedro, or someone acquired in trade or free agency do not look a soft spot on this team for the few years, especially if we do sign Lee. What I am worried about it the bullpen, we all know about Brad Lidge. I’m confident in JC Romero, Ryan Madson, espcially if he can mature & take on the closers spot, & Chan Ho Park, sorry Chan Ho, but I really like you in the bullpen. Scott Eyre I believe is retiring, Chad Durbin started off well, but had elbow problems late in the season. But besides them we don’t really have much depth & I’d really like to get another two, three strong reliable arms in there before we worry about signing another star pitcher; a bad SP can win 5 games a season, but if the bullpen blows more than 6, whats the difference of having a good 11 game winner in there.

Raul Ibanez turns 39 in the middle of the 2011 season.
I think you’re being overly optimistic on Ibanez, if he finishes out his 3 years productive as he has been for his career I’ll be impressed…Rollins I feel is on the down side of his career and may slide badly.

i just said 3 because that’s how long Raul’s contract is. I’m hopeful in Ben Francisco to become a solid starter. As far as Rollins is concerned I was thinking the exact same thing as I was typing it, but I still want to see what he does this year, a lot of his low numbers were b/c he was hitting right at people all year

Ibanez contract was for 3 years, but one year is gone – so actually it’s only 2 more years…
But I still don’t think he’s playing out that contract…i think the phillies are going to need 2 new starting outfielders in 2011, thank god they have two quality prospects for cost control…oh wait, what?
by jemagee on Dec 17, 2009 11:18 PM EST up reply actions
Too bad there’s no such thing as free agency in baseball. Where are they ever going to find a corner outfielder!?
A. Cost Control – something very important for a team ‘on a budget’ (whatever the budget) – not exactly a free agency maiin stay
B. FA is no guarantee of getting anything of quality as a team on a budget can’t often fight with the ‘big boys’ to get the best players and then you’re over paying a 36 year old left fielder who is a poor fielder for 3 years and hoping he can contribute for 2.

Seattle is a pretty good team...
I’m not sure why Lee feels incredible disappointed. Sure, it’ll be harder to get back to the WS in the AL, but he and King Felix get to anchor the staff of an up-and-coming team and (perhaps) the odds-on AL West favorite
Oh, and Malibu, I posted this as a fanshot without seeing your fanpost for some reason. Don’t mean to steal any of your thunder bro…
i just dont but it.
if lee wanted to stay in philly he would have agreed to an extension instead of FA at the winter meetings cmon lee we all know u wanted to test the Free Agency and go to the Yankees or the Red Sox u never wanted to stay with us.
i’d prefer Halladay anyway because hes a real player and he is the one that really wants to stay with us
eff you we winning anyway

I think now is the appropriate time to thank Cliff Lee for being an absolute boss for 4+ months. He was an awesome Phillie while he was here, and he (along with Rollins’ hit in NLCS Game 5) truly defined the 2009 Phillies for me.
I would have loved to keep him, but I don’t feel like he would have re-signed for 4/80 like Halladay did.
Maybe following the stories and actually learning more about his real market value from the people not from his moochy agent made him consider the 18-20 Million from the Phils.
If his ‘moochy’ agent is telling Lee he’ll get numbers that aren’t realistic, well that would be a bad idea for said moochy agent, cause whatever percentage he gets paid, if Lee gets 0 so does he.

just was stating… pretty much if Lee though is being truthful it confirms the man-crush that Amaro has with Halladay. Tis a shame all around.
If Lee is being truthful, Amaro lied, if Amaro is being truthful, Lee lied
My guess is they both are lying and telling the truth in parts…so the ‘real’ truth is somewhere in the middle

Glad we had him. Now play ball.
With the mercenary way baseball players and teams act, I stopped getting to attached to players. I root for the team, players come and go to much now to get attached to. I respect what he did here, game one of the series will live in my memory a long time. I don’t know who is more truthful or less.
The business side of the game always wins out, so money says Lee goes. I hate it but that’s what is happening here. The prospects lost hurt too. Moyers contract hurts, and I hate that it was signed. I am hopeful for a great pennant run, and a new series win.
We don't play stats, we play baseball.

Has anyone thought that Lee’s counteroffer was probably a bit ridiculous price wise, and definitely a 5-6 year offer not the 3 year extension we got from Halladay.
