Lee disappointed Phillies preferred Halladay
So clearly Phillies/Jays/M's fans weren't the only people surprised by the deal.
It was interesting that Lee made it clear that he WANTED to sign a long-term deal in Philly and that he "expected to send the rest of his career [here]."
Oh well. He should be fine in Seattle (as should Halladay here!) Best of luck to him.

I’ll bet you if Lee would have agreed to a 3 year extensions with some vesting options similar to what Halladay agreed to they would have signed him and kept their prospects.

exactly
if lee would have signed an extension right away the deal would of been done
but if Lee wanted to test free agency, Amaro most likely wanted to lock up an Ace for a few years rather than wait to see & maybe be on the losing end & see cliff lee end somewhere else at the end of the upcoming season. & for all you Lee lovers, if he is going to try free agency like it seems he wants to & if he loves Philly, like he’s saying right now, then we could always sign him at the end of this year

Well – in theory yes – but for the same reasons they couldn’t keep lee and halladay this year, I think there’s a less than 1% chance the phillies even bother to make a run at Lee…it would break their budget, give him say only 15 million a year and you’d have two players making 25% of your budget if it’s at 140 miillion…heck-even at 200 million they’d be at 17.5% of your budget.
Cliff Lee isn’t going to pitch for Philadelphia again unless it’s in the twilight of his career.
