Phils Exercise Rollins Option for 2011
Not a surprise, but a nice bit of news and I think well timed. Unless his production suddenly craters, he's an absolute bargain at the $8.5 million he'll earn--even with the lousy OBP. The Rollins contract was Ed Wade's last and arguably greatest gift to the Phillies franchise; when it's all done, the former MVP will have delivered tens of millions of dollars in value beyond what he actually earned over its six years, including the option.

Good news on Jimmy, I guess, but I’m worried he’s going to start a slide down hill, and faster than we thought.
On another note – is the ‘new posts’ function not working for people today or just me?

obvious choice…
“I just don’t think Chan Ho and the Phillies are going to be able to bring the marriage together,” Amaro said.
Cue the $3.75 million dollar contract to John Smoltz who will either break or be ineffective… woo hoo!
"I tried to run him over but Eli had his big boy pads on and he kind of stopped me from getting in the end zone. The next time I’ll try to jump over his head.’’ - Asante Samuel
To be clear… I loathe John Smoltz. Between the homophobia and the whining about our park, eff him. But it wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world to have him in Park’s role, if he’d take it.
More likely I think is that they get one of the low-risk/high-reward guys PhillyFriar ID’d last week, and/or (my preference) turn to Mathieson and Bastardo, cheapo homegrown options whose stuff is good enough for them to succeed in short stints.
Smoltz hatred for me is mitigated somewhat by the fact that he used to give Barry Bonds the finger in the dugout while both were in their primes. He’s also ripped CBP iirc.

Wow, hadn’t even read the homophobia thing. What a pleasant, pleasant man.
That being said, I’d much prefer Smoltz to Rodney, especially if he’s willing to take some sort of incentive-laden deal. Seriously, anything but Francisco Rodney, Ruben.
And while I agree that Bastardo should head north from spring training to Philly (and not merely as a pit stop to Allentown), I’d send Mathieson to Triple-A to start; I’d like to see how he responds to pitching on back-to-back days before I call him back up. That being said, I think he could be a big help to the bullpen this year.

Smoltz's homophobia + Chan HoDon'tGoaphobia
so is this homophobia of the ‘religion justifies my bigotry" variety or just plain old repressed homosexual in homophobia clothing?
It’d be surreal to see him in red pinstripes. But even more weird is imagine Lawerence Jones in red pinstripes.
Man Chan Ho and the vote for Victorino sandwich board, you’da thunk he really found a home with us and I think it showed in his performance. Someone call his wife and get him to stop sniffing glue. One thing though he’d help expand some team’s market in Korea if he did start; he’d just not expand the w’s in the column of the team’s record.
Heard NYY might go after Sheets or Myers Anyone hear anything about this as well?
Many reports I’ve read state that Park wants to start and the Phillies won’t make that promise (mistake?) again, so he’ll go somewhere else that promises him he can start.
Of course it’s his right to do whatever he wants, but that’s pretty damn frustrating. He’s going to be a reliever sooner or later, because he’s simply not a good starter anymore. Presumably he’d rather be a reliever in Philadelphia than Houston or whatever loser team signs him with a chance to start; what’s so difficult to grasp about this? It’s the same situation as Aaron Heilman (though he’s not really a good reliever at this point either) or Ryan Madson.
It’s the holidays—tip your waitresses a little extra! Santa’s watching you cheapskates out there!

Paul Hagen alludes to the elephant that’s, if not in the room yet, knocking on the door:
…on Opening Day last season there were five Phillies with higher base salaries than the $7.5 million the three-time All-Star shortstop pulled down; he also got another $1 million as a prorated portion of his signing bonus.
Management tacitly acknowledged that this could turn into a contentious issue with their longest-tenured player yesterday…
I wonder if they try to extend him next offseason. Jimmy’s defense is very valuable, but even acknowledging that, he’s also the kind of player likely to get overpaid on the open market (he’ll be 34 when that happens, and he’s a former MVP and has the intangibles factor going for him).
Given his organization, his position, and his makeup, you do get a chance that he could be some strange hybrid of Julio Franco and Rickey Henderson. At some point the Phils will just have to give him the Jeter treatment or let someone else pay for what you’d presume is decline, but may well be a 10-year plateau of being among the top 5 shortstops in baseball.
