Mr. Beardo Goes to Washington: Eric Bruntlett signs minor league deal with Nationals
Thank you, Beardo, for that winning run in Game Three of the 2008 World Series, and of course... the Triple Play.

Watch out, kabuki-style American president race around the infield. They can send him out as a pinch runner for Lincoln.

Anybody concerned?
Nope.
He’ll get injured.
Remember the Phitans

This.
Holliday would have been a much better fit for them, even with a greater price tag. Bay has given back 43 runs with his glove over the past 3 years, and I don’t see that getting any better as he: (A) moves from the smallest left field in baseball to one of the largest; and (B) gets older.
That being said, the guy’s still a very good hitter, with patience (career 12.9% BB) and power (career .240 ISO) galore. A lineup that starts Reyes/Castillo/Wright/Beltran/Bay is by no means something to sneer at. Still, to compete for the division with the Phils and Braves, they’ll need to stabilize their rotation, add some sort of first baseman (probably Delgado), and — most importantly — find some sort of way to stay healthy.
Ahhh you’re right, I seem to write them off every year, and they hang around till the death.
Assuming the Marlins deal Uggla, I’m hard-pressed to see them on the same level as the Phils and Braves. Johnson/Nolasco is a great 1-2 punch for their rotation, but it’s no better than what the Phillies and Braves are running out there, and the Fish lineup is going to take a massive hit with Uggla’s departure. Coghlan will slide to second, but that’ll still leave a gaping hole in left field (Stanton is nowhere near ready yet), and at third base (unless they want to give away runs by playing Cantu there).
They’ll win 85 games, cause some panic in Philly and Atlanta with well-timed sweeps of the division favorites, but unless everything breaks their way, I’m not seeing them as more than a long shot to win the division.
I read something earlier, I don’t remember where that sort of implied the marlins were at that ‘critical mass’ point with a few players where they would start trading them before their arbitration numbers got beyond affordability for the franchise.
Good thing the state gave them a new stadium huH?

In the past, Loria said that if there was a stadium under construction, he’d be willing to sign players to long-term deals based on the future revenue streams.
Ah Jeff Loria
yes Mr Loria, we were so impressed with how you ran the Montreal Expos that we’d love for you to own another MLB team…

Got a link? I’m not finding the quote on google.
I have no particular love for Loria, but in his eight years with the Marlins, the team is over .500 with a World Series championship. Some of that credit probably belongs to John Henry as well, but the team has stayed pretty consistently above-average throughout that time period despite having among the lowest revenues in the sport. They always do a very admirable job at player development.
Flipside: if they weren’t good at player development (being based in Miami of all places), they should be dragged out into the street and shot.

The post is kind of funny— already the comparisons to Bobby Bonilla are starting. The only worry point is the terms — 4 yrs $66M? whoo boy. I know someone on the Phillies who feels like a hot blonde just hopped on his back as he was holding a fulll pitcher of beer.

I’m disappointed I didn’t do a better job remembering this Ultimate Male Fantasy, heterosexual division.

Werth really has the organization over a barrel now, especially with Michael Taylor gone. Amaro should just bite the bullet and get an extension done now. Werth deserves it, of course, but I just hope there won’t be too much of an adverse chain reaction with Howard and Utley.
