2 years.

Francisco, Dobbs, Schneider, Castro, Gload... that's the bench so far. Pray for our starting eight.

THis has to be about saving money

though at this point I accept the fact they’re not saving it FOR anything, at least not when it comes to FA/trade acquisitions this offseason.

Pray for our starting eight is right.

In that vein, I can’t imagine Hinske would cost any more than Gload (especially given that 3 teams were dumb enough to jump on the latter with 2- year offers this early in the offseason, whereas we’ve literally heard nothing about Hinske st this point).

I dunno, maybe there is something to the old school theory that a pinch hitter is up there to get a hit. I mean, that’s the only possible reason for liking Gload more than Hinske — either that, or something stupid like “familiarity with the NL East.”

And I feel like it’s deja vu, but was it really necessary to sign a mediocre bench player to a two-year deal?

Agreed – what in the world is going on with these senseless extra years?

do we have a guy who can bring speed off the bench? I’m as happy as anyone to not have bruntlett on the team, but who is taking his place as our guy who can do things on the basepath?

by char6587 on Dec 9, 2009 12:36 AM EST reply actions

The only thing Bruntlett could do on the basepaths was actually to be faster than Burrell and Ibanez, which really isn’t the athletic feat of the century. He made a handful of boneheaded baserunning mistakes that I remember and was never much of a threat to steal a base, so I don’t think that particular ability will be lost on the team.

Plus, I’d venture a guess Francisco is just about as fast as Bruntlett, and if you pinch-run him for Ibanez he gives you the added bonus of actually being able to hit from the six-hole.

I completely understand why some would like a Bourn-type guy like Berry as the 25th man, but let’s not act like Bruntlett was Vince Coleman.

If this isn’t about saving money then I do in fact fear for the starting lineup. I would venture a guess that this is an upgrade to Beardo, most anything is better than him. I try to never judge until the season is under way, but I don’t like Gload.

Just the other day I was thinking to myself, “The key to the Phillies getting back to the World Series is signing another Greg Dobbs, but preferably older and with less power.”

All I can say, is that if Bud Selig decides to ban left-handed pitchers, the Phillies should have an easy time making it back to the postseason. On the off chance Selig decides lefties can keep pitching, this lineup may have some matchup problems.

by mattjg on Dec 9, 2009 7:25 AM EST reply actions

If Bud Banned Lefties Blanton would be our ace. We’d need a lot of HRs to offset the Blanton, Kendrick, Matthieson, Naylor and Drabek.

Carpenter for Naylor. Now we’ve got ourselves a rotation.

benchy

If an outfielder gets hurt, the obvious long-term replacement will be Michael Taylor (barring some injury on his part). If Rollins or Utley go down… Castro? Kind of scary.

It’s terrifying, but no more so than our situation for the last two years.

There just aren’t a whole lot of quality backup middle IF in MLB these days. The main problem I have with the Castro signing was that we gave him a million dollars. If we’d signed him for peanuts, I still wouldn’t have liked it but I wouldn’t have been all that bothered by it either.

by taco pal on Dec 9, 2009 11:06 AM EST up reply actions

umm…isn’ t a million pretty much peanuts for a veteran? I’m not seeing he deserves that, but I imagine Beardo was getting about the same. I though a million was basically league minimum for someone who was past his abitration years.

Maybe. Still too much for that guy though.

Gload Replaces Stairs. The Move Is OK, Not Great.

Schneider, Castro and Gload replace Bako, Bruntlett and the 41-year-old Stairs, respectively. Each move is a small improvement, but nothing to get excited about. I suggest we keep our powder dry until the Phils make their pitching moves.

by Derekcarstairs on Dec 9, 2009 7:27 AM EST reply actions

What the Phils do with their pitching won’t impact the way the Castro and Gload signings are evaluated at all. The problem with those signings isn’t that the Phillies spent too little (which could be made-up-for if they’re saving money for other needs). It’s that they spent too much on two guys who aren’t very good. So if anything, it hurts the Phillies’ ability to get pitching later in the offseason. So it makes no sense to keep one’s “powder dry” – we already have all the information we need to know these moves were mistakes.

by taco pal on Dec 9, 2009 11:02 AM EST up reply actions

I agree that Gload isn’t worth half of what they may be paying him. Castro on the other hand is a wait and see situation with me, he’s a slight improvement over the previous bench personnel but still not worth as much as he’s getting paid. Our bench is still going to be a crap shoot, but at least now it’s a slightly improved crap shoot.

What bench isn't a crapshoot?

That’s the nature of benches and bullpens.

Dodgers

Regardless of the age of that bench, they had hell of a good one in the playoffs.

Sigh. Who will Lift and Separate off the bench?

by Wet Luzinski on Dec 9, 2009 7:47 AM EST reply actions

Wont be happy until it’s signed, sealed and delivered. But it’s a promising sign… I hope.

I’m happy. If there is any truth, it could help put an end to these Halladay rumors.

by Boundforbeach on Dec 9, 2009 11:18 AM EST up reply actions

No chance of that, the Halladay drama will continue unless he’s either traded to another team or come trade deadline.

Korea called, and notes all the way at the bottom that Chan Ho Park is better in relief. Amen I say unto you: You want to start for the Pirates, go ahead. You want to be on a contender with a realistic shot at the WS, come to the table and play ball.

by Wet Luzinski on Dec 9, 2009 11:19 AM EST reply actions

not sure if it’s 100% correct, but I read somewhere that Gload led the league in PHs last year and he can play a few different positions. for a 3rd or 4th guy off the bench, I like the signing.

by ajr142 on Dec 9, 2009 3:51 PM EST reply actions

I like this

Gload was my favorite bench guy when he was with the White Sox. Decent bat, decent glove.

The power play is still f**king clown shoes

by HappyHuman on Dec 9, 2009 8:17 PM EST reply actions

I hope he doesn’t turn into another Wes Helms when he dons the red pinstripes.

That being said, Gload is just a horrible name. It just sounds dirty.

by doubleh on Dec 9, 2009 10:19 PM EST reply actions

up until we get to read something catchy like, “Gload Unloads on Wagner as Phils Win in 10th, 7-6.” I could get used to that kind of dirty talk, statistics be damned.

9th inning jack by Gload helps Phils sweep the Braves.

“So the Phils will send Juan Castro to the plate here with the tying run aboard in the 9th, having already blown their Gload on a pinch hit opportunity in the 6th.”

by PhillyFriar on Dec 10, 2009 4:28 PM EST up reply actions

No way Cholly blows his Gload in the 6th; he always waits until the 8th or 9th inning to bring up the big stick. OMG, I can run with this all night. /switching to decaf
