March 23, 2009 - Phillies Breakfast Links

Japan defeats Team USA in the World Baseball Classic semifinal game, 9-4, with Derek Jeter committing a costly throwing error in the 8th inning.  Jimmy Rollins, the designated hitter, went 4-for-4 with a triple and a stolen base.  Japan will play Korea in the Finals tonight.

And the Phillies were shut down by Josh Beckett and the Red Sox, 3-0.  Brett Myers was disappointed in his performance.

Looks like Jason Donald and John Mayberry will start the year in AAA-Lehigh Valley, so Eric Bruntlett and his beard can get at-bats.

Rich Dubee = Tom Hagen?  Frankly I like the idea of a pitching coach whose sole focus remains on the pitchers.

Mike Koplove still hoping against hope.  So is Lou Marson.

Our old friend Gavin Floyd signs a four year, $15MM extension with the White Sox.  Good luck buddy.

Jamie Moyer, Hall of Fame candidate?  I don't think so, but he's definitely had a really good, interesting career.

Gary "Sarge" Matthews, Sr. is designing and selling a line of men's hats through MLB.  This is simultaneously the greatest and worst event in the history of humankind.

Moyer

Certainly not HOF if he retires in the next couple of years. But then, what if he really does pitch until he’s 50 and breaks 300 wins? Unlikely as that is, if it happened his numbers would then be sorta-comparable to Phil Niekro’s if you squinted a bit, and Niekro’s in.

"Fame" or "Great"

At the Baseball Prospectus roundtable I went to a couple weeks ago, Kevin Goldstein stated his thoughts that the Hall of Fame places too much emphasis on greatness/objective standards and not enough on “Fame.” He argued that a true Hall of “Fame” would induct Darryl Strawberry, arguably one of the three or four most “famous” players of the 1980s, but would exclude guys like Bert Blyleven — great in his way, but not particularly “famous.”

It’s interesting to think about, even if it skews toward big markets. But I think if he pitches to 50 and reaches some milestones, Moyer would be a solid candidate for induction in the Goldstein Hall of “Fame”.
