Phils option Carrasco, Mayberry
The last of the prospects leave big-league camp, clearing the way for Miguel Cairo to win the final bench spot. Thrilling, huh?

Too bad about Mayberry
I’m disappointed to see Carrasco go back down but we all knew it was gonna happen… Mayberry really fought for his spot on the team this spring… its a shame to have to option him
fortunately we’ll see them both back soon
"Can you feel that, that thing that's beatin' in your doggone chest right now, man? Can you feel that? Can you feel what's about to happen on this field, man?"
Brian Dawkins... Eagle for Life
Mayberry had a few good games to start the spring, but he ended it with a .288 OBP in 69 at-bats. So I don’t think there’s any injustice in him getting cut.
As for Carrasco, he should be brought back when and only when he’s ready to hold down a permanent spot in the rotation. Unless some sort of disaster strikes this year, that should be April 2010.
As the pitching got more and more like MLB pitching, Mayberry’s ability to hit it went down. He’ll rake in the minors, but he’s not ready for the Show.
Carrasco has just started to grasp the mental aspect of the game; one more 1/2 to full season in AAA will do wonders for his game and consistency. He’s got the pure stuff, has finally started to gain some command and control of his pitches and now needs to put it all together. If he tries to do that in the bigs he’ll turn into Kyle Kendrick and nobody wants that.
to be clear
I don’t have a rational problem with either decision—in Carrasco’s case, this was definitely the right thing to do, and that’s very probably true of Mayberry as well. I just find things a little more fun and interesting when you’ve got some rookies running around.
I think it was Callis (or Crasnick) on ESPN.com chat today who said that Mayberry would do better playing every day in the minors then the bench role he’d play (that they are supposedly talking to Sheffield about) up in Phildelphia
"Someone created the box score," Morey says, "and he should be shot."
Blocked shots — they look great, but unless you secure the ball afterward, you haven’t helped your team all that much.
