Next time you're found, with your chin on the ground
There's a lot to be learned, so look around

Just what makes that little old ant
Think he'll move that rubber tree plant
Anyone knows an ant, can't
Move a rubber tree plant

But he's got high hopes, he's got high hopes
He's got high apple pie, in the sky hopes

So any time you're gettin' low
'stead of lettin' go
Just remember that ant
Oops there goes another rubber tree plant

When troubles call, and your backs to the wall
There a lot to be learned, that wall could fall

Once there was a silly old ram
Thought he'd punch a hole in a dam
No one could make that ram, scram
He kept buttin' that dam

So any time you're feelin' bad
'stead of feelin sad
Just remember that ram
Oops there goes a billion kilowatt dam

Any time a celebrity dies, there are always some coldhearted bastard out there ready to pipe up “Come on, you never really knew him. Why is this any worse than the millions of anonymous people who die every day?”

Maybe they’re right, but whatever. This breaks my heart and I feel like I want to cry.

This is different

I tend to usually agree with those thoughts, but it’s different when you listen to the guy day in, day out for thirty some odd years.

And expect to listen to him 162+ times a year. I heard Harry Kalas’ voice more than I heard most of my friends and family. He may not have known me, but I certainly knew him.

For Who? My teammates.

For What? To Win.

How Much? Where do I sign?

That’s exactly it. I’ve definitely heard his voice more than any other person’s outside of my most immediate family. It’s just absolutely crushing.

Harry was the greatest. Never to be equaled, never to be forgotten.

It was wonderful that he got to have last year, and even better that we got to have him calling it for us.

Rest in peace.

Because we feel like we know him—he came into our homes every day—he’ll never call a Ryan Howard HR ever again. I am beyond heart broken. There are no words.

A truly sad day for the Phillies and baseball in general

Harry was one of the best things about watching the Phillies…and baseball in general.

It’s just never going to be the same without Harry. Thoughts and prayers to his family and friends.

Giants fan here, but more importantly, a baseball fan

I just heard the news on ESPNews and I’m heartbroken. He was one of the last great broadcasters out there. He was one of the reasons I got into sports media. My heart goes out to you Philly fans who heard him every day. He’ll truly be missed.

RIP Mr. Kalas.

I think the reason this is so upsetting beyond the obvious is that Harry Kalas was a Phillies fan like us. Every game that we watched on TV for years, we watched with our friend Harry Kalas. His mood went up and down with ours, and we experienced the emotion of watching baseball along side him on a daily basis for years.

Can't Believe It...

I am a Cards fan, but I have been living in the Philly area, and have grown to love Kalas’ distinctive voice and style. I was just listening to him announce yesterday’s Rockies game and actually stopped my train of thought to note that he was one of the best announcers I’d heard. The love of him by Phillies fan can’t be doubted… I just can’t believe it. All of baseball has lost a treasure.

Do a silent TV Broadcast.

by taco pal on Apr 13, 2009 2:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That was my idea as well – makes me regret not having the indemand package this year – both radio and tv should be silent except for end of inning score updates

"Someone created the box score," Morey says, "and he should be shot."

Blocked shots — they look great, but unless you secure the ball afterward, you haven’t helped your team all that much.

If for no other reason than that it may just be too hard for Wheels and the gang to muster up the strength (or suppress their grief long enough) to comment on the game.

I became a part of SB Nation because the hockey website I’m a part of joined SBN. I’ve bounced around from site to site checking out some of the various sites, without any real desire to join any of them.

Now for the second time in a week, I’m joining another site to offer my condolences to an extended family of a baseball team that has lost a member of their family too soon.

My thoughts and prayers are with all of you in this difficult time.

Angels fan here

I am also shocked and saddened by this loss. Philly fans enjoyed a special privilege listening to Kalas all these years. The rest of the country got to enjoy him only in brief spurts and missed out on a classic, comforting, friend.

I can only hope that Harry got his wish by going when he was in the middle of doing that which he loved to do more than anything.

My condolences to his family, and to Philly fans everywhere. Godspeed, Harry. We know of a young pitcher that needs a good play by play man.

Angels fan here as well

..passing along condolences on what is becoming an incredibly tough week for baseball.

What a loss for all of sports, but most especially for the Kalas family, friends, and Phillies fans everywhere. Gems like Kalas come along VERY rarely. He will truly be missed.

His is certainly the first baseball voice I heard, as I lived in the Philly area when I was very young, and followed the Mike Schmidt /Bob Boone Phils of the late 70s and early 80s. I followed Boone to Angel land, but I still have a soft spot for the Phillies, and Harry Kalas made listening to the games on XM just fantastic.

We all lost an icon today. Godspeed Harry.

Just as bad as when Whitey died

This is so depressing, it’s just as bad as when Richie died. The two of them together were priceless and they really enriched my enjoyment of Phillies baseball. I’m sure the two of them will get to call games at the Field of Dreams.

From By Saam and Bill Campbell down through Richie and Harry, we’ve really been blessed with some great announcers over the years.

Visiting from LetsGoTribe … but I’ve lived in Philly for 20 years and have been listening to Harry call the games the whole time. His calls of the 1993 postseason are permanently etched in my mind. Cleveland lost its touchstone voice of generations Herb Score last fall, but unlike Herb, Harry got to go out calling a World Series victory for his club. Anyone who’s heard a lot of radio guys in a lot of towns can tell you, Harry was one of the True Greats. He had not only longevity, but greatness.

Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Dodger Condolences

I’m a Dodger fan and live in LA but am still truly sorry to learn about Philly’s loss and can’t think of a reason why anyone would be so cold hearted to minimize the impact on Phillie fans only because many had never “really knew or met him”. I believe close emotional ties can and are developed between the masses and a person that reaches out to the community through the airwaves such as Harry. I can only put myself in the shoes of Phillies fans and imagine what I would feel if it were Vin Scully. My heart goes out to Phillies fans! R.I.P. Harry and God bless.

Grew up listening to Harry the K.

I remember discovering baseball in 1987. I’ve listened to Harry Kalas for 22 years since then. I remember the call from the 1993 NLCS, I remember meeting him outside the Vet after Kevin Milwood’s no-hitter and thinking, “What a classy guy!” The city has celebrated with him, cried with him when Richie Ashburn passed away, and now a mourns the loss of a voice that can never be replicated. At least he went out on top!

Wow....I'm just sick right now

I will miss Harry. His voice was, for me, part of life’s ritual of summer. I am also a Steelers fan, and this is just about as difficult for me as losing Myron Cope was. At least I had an idea that Myron was really ill and was not going to be with us much longer. This is much more sudden, and that makes it a little less easy to deal with.

In a world of cookie cutter corporateness, where one town looks the same as another — the same strip malls, the same restaurants…Harry Kalas was something that set southeastern Pennsylvania apart (in a good way) from other places. Voices and personalities like his are not likely to be seen again. They are relics from a time when, in at least this instance, the halcyon days of yore were better.

I will miss you this year (and the next, and the next…) during the hundreds of hours of Phillies games I will listen to.

Godspeed, Harry. You brought a lot of joy into my life, and you did your job well. The world will be a poorer place without you.

Condolences from a Mets fan

I have definitely enjoyed Harry’s mastery behind the microphone and his impeccable broadcasting style, though not too much for obvious reasons. Loved him even more whenever he did NFL Films stuff, because that’s how I remembered him from the most. I was outright stunned to hear the news just now (was at work for most of the day).

My prayers and thoughts go out to his family, friends, and colleagues during their time of grief.

You guys were very lucky to have such an iconic voice to call your games. I knew him mostly from his NFL voiceover stuff and I could listen to it all day long. He will be sorely missed but he will live an as my and many others internal narrations.

My sincerest condolences.

A Mets fan here

You Phillies fans have been blessed with some great announcers as have us Mets fans. If you needed a Big call in a Big game, there was none better than Harry Kalas. I took great pleasure in listening to your broadcast from the late 70’s on. I started watching Phillies games on WPHL channel 17 on cable and listening to games on the radio. Harry Kalas was always a treat to listen to.

As far as to why they are playing today’s game, it is a Washington’s home opener. If this game were in Philadelphia, it would not have been played. Harry would have wanted this game to be played. That is the kind of guy he was. I loved listening to him.

To you Phillie fans, this is a terrible loss. I send my heart felt condolences to you. But I will bet that Harry and Richie Ashburn are calling today’s game in Heaven.

God Bless You Harry Kalas and all of you Phiiles fans!!!

Harry exuded class and professionalism. There wasn’t a voice I enjoyed and respected more in the game. Even when he did something as inconsequential as the Puppy Bowl, it was his tone that made it enjoyable. My condolences to all Phillie fans, the organization, and his family, friends, and coleagues.

I am deeply sorry to hear of the passing of the great voice of the Phillies. I just listened to all six of the clips above and understand and share your love and appreciation for Mr. Kalas. What a great guy he was and a wonderful thing to have him to grow up with as most of you have. You are all rich with his memories. Rest in Peace Harry.

Sorry to hear about this. I may not like the Phillies, but I’ve always respected Harry Kalas. Plus, he’s been the voice of the Super Bowl for me since long before I even knew he was associated with the Phillies – it’s gonna be really depressing to hear the Super Bowl highlight film narrated by someone else next year.

by cjmulrain on Apr 13, 2009 4:47 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Fellow Met Fan,

I agree it will feel different to watch an NFL highlight film without hearing his voice. But I also feel that he’s passed the torch to the capable hands of Scott Graham, who does a fine job as well with NFL Films.

And I’ve posted earlier, but again, sad to hear the news.

Graham

He was the Phillies’ radio play by play guy until a couple years ago. A lot of us thought he would be a worthy successor to Harry—or actually, his radio counterpart, as Harry mostly did TV over the last few years—but the team cast him off to bring back former Mets broadcaster Tom McCarthy. Who stinks on ice. It would be nice to see Scotty come back—he was the rare younger guy who, like Harry, understood that silence was as big a part of a good broadcast as talk, and he had a similar love for the game.

I liked Graham. Didn’t he do the “put one in the win column for the Fightin’ Phils”?
I also do not care for Tom McCarthy. For several reasons.

I liked him too, and I was warming to the idea of him being the heir apparent when he was let go.

I also liked how he would refer to the inside and outside “corners” of the plate instead as the inside and outside “edges.” It’s much more accurate if you think about it. Pretty dorky, I know.

We're all fans.

I’m sorry for your loss out in Halos Heaven, Angel fans. Baseball fans everywhere were shocked and saddened by it.

Harry Kalas is the voice of my childhood, forever tied to Richie Ashburn in my definition of summer.

I turned on the radio and heard this news immediately. My heart is broken, but I’m glad that Harry was the one to call the championship, that he got to see this team and city celebrate an amazing victory. Can’t imagine how they’re managing to play today. My prayers go out to his family and friends, and great appreciation goes to those who didn’t grow up with him and love him anyway.

Harry and Whitey, together again. I always figured being announced by those guys was Heaven.

From an Oakland A's fan

Mr. Kalas was a legendary voice and I would like to pass along my condolences. We went through the same thing a few years ago when we lost our longtime announcer Bill King. I am sure that those of you Phillies fans who grew up listening to Mr. Kalas are feeling the same things I felt when Bill passed away. I grew up listening to Bill from a very young age and incredibly skilled announcers like those two gentlemen enhance a fan’s love for this game.

How wonderful that he got to call last year’s Series win. Bittersweet.

He will be missed. Rest in peace, Mr. Kalas.

…and will just never know. To all the nights in the background and the foreground of my life, thanks Harry. I started listening to the man on KYW as a child, falling asleep, or doing homework (or both). Just this past weekend I listened as I was reading books at bedtime to my guys, with the transistor on the shelf.

I was fortunate to have met the man years ago at Notre Dame Stadium…very gracious. Glad I took the opportunity then to tell him thanks, what a fan of his I was.

Thanks all from all over for the kind words.

Terribly sad news

Harry is the only voice I’ve known for the phillies (outside of the occasional game where it was just Wheeler). Kalas was as much my memory of a great Phillie as any player I can think of (except maybe Richie the K). Just terrible news. The one bright side is the man loved his job and he died doing it. We all should be that lucky.

Philadelphia does not deserve this. Condolences to the Kalas family, Phillies fans, the organization, and the rest of the city. He always brought me home

I grew up listening to Harry, grade school, middle school, high school. As soon as you heard his voice you knew summer was coming. When I turned eightteen I joined the Marine Corps, I would still get to hear him from time to time no matter where I was stationed. When I was twenty one I went off to war, I still found ways to hear his calls, even if it were days after the game.

Harry’s voice kept me sane, his voice was a piece of home and hope that kept me fighting. He always brought me home, one out at a time.

You will always be missed Harry, and I owe you my life old friend.

For so many years, Harry defined our Spring, Summer and even late Fall, when fortunate enough as we and he were last year. His voice coincided with the crocuses blooming, with the end of long winters with no ballgames, with a sense of renewal and optimism. To Harry "The K"

I’m a Braves fan … have been since 1947 … but, the only games we went to last year were one against the Phils … pull for you when it doesn’t impact us … have since the ’70s when I called Valley Forge home. Still hurting from the last three innings of last weeks finale.

Mine isn’t a baseball blog but we truly love the game and three of our ongoing features are devoted to it.

A fourth is dedicated to recently departed friends and notables from all walks of life. The news of the day is that Harry "The K!" Kalas has passed away … a truly great loss from which we will not soon recover. We, along with all baseball fans, feel your pain and mourn his passing. While we can’t and would never attempt to compete with you folks in paying tribute, he will be featured in the May update of our "Gone – Not Forgotten" Feature.

Harry was a great broadcaster … you know that better than anyone … delighting millions with his "Outta here!"; his stories and anecdotes, in addition to "calling" a great game. We would like to include as many as possible of those in our "Baseball’s Magic Moments" Feature. It’s a repository for such things so that they might be preserved and enjoyed by all … now, and in the future.

I’m sure that many of you have stories about Mr. Kalas, and remember many of the countless stories he’s told … funny, interesting ones that he told so well … we hope you’ll share them with us so that they might be included. My email and blog URL are included in my profile.

We all have our memories … Harry may have announced Philly games but he belonged to the world … remember him calling the "Puppy Bowls" ? … what a great voice!

Thanks!

You can't sit on a lead and run a few plays into the line and just kill the clock. You've got to throw the ball over the goddamn plate and give the other man his chance. That's why baseball is the greatest game of them all.
