The Beat Goes On: Phillies at Nationals Game Thread, April 16, 2009

Philadelphia Phillies at Washington Nationals, Apr 16, 2009 7:05 PM EDT

With one scheduled off day and one rainout, it's been about 72 hours since the Phillies left the field on that surreal, sad day on Monday.  The Phillies look to sweep the abbreviated series with the Washington Nationals before heading back home to a very somber Citizens Bank Park and a weekend of tributes to the late Harry Kalas.

Righty Joe Blanton goes for the Phillies in his second start of the season, versus the Nationals' Shairon Martis.

Perhaps most notably, C Lou Marson makes just his second career start for the Phillies tonight.  Hopefully it goes as well as his first (a regular season finale home run).

Discuss the game below.

Next Game

They are reaching out to hit the ball, not good.

On the other hand, the HK patch looks good.

Howard struck out on a couple of tough changeups there.

I guess you don’t do it after two off-days, but it looks to me like Rollins could maybe sit one.

by dajafi on Apr 16, 2009 7:15 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

That was an awful at bat for Howard. Ahead 3-1 and he goes after 2 straight changeups.

To be fair, pitchers really know how to handle him now.

He’d been pretty good/disciplined for a few games there, though. A few days off can get you off your rhythmn.

Horrendous error by the Phils.

2nd and 3rd for the Gnats

Three hard-hit balls to start Blanton’s evening, the last two going for hits. Then Feliz bobbles the throw in and the runners go to 2nd and 3rd.

Stinks when guys are so good in the spring, then come north and struggle. Maybe it’s just the usual ups and downs, magnified at the start of the year.

Cookies needs to stay down in the zone. Even the Nats can smack pitches that are up in the zone.

I think I’d kind of like the team—young pitching, patience and power lineup—were the announcers not so terrible. That roving reporter chick… every time she comes on, it’s like a piece of my soul dies.

There’s one back. Two-out single by Ibanez plates Utley.

Both hits on first pitches. They’re seeing something second time through the order. Now Feliz takes a hack first-pitch… though he always does that.

Gah, Happy Pete sucks.

by dajafi on Apr 16, 2009 8:26 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

That was fucking weak. Dude really just can’t tell a ball from a strike, can’t tell a fastball from a curveball, and knows it too. That is why he just goes up there hacking. He figures that as he gets deeper into the count he is likely to be fooled with something off speed so he takes his chances on a first pitch fastball.

by FuquaManuel on Apr 16, 2009 8:37 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

If there is anything that has been very frustrating this game, it is the inability of the Phillies to do anything with counts very well in their own favor. 2-0 and 3-1 counts have produced nothing but popups.

That is true, but they haven’t even really been able to get the guys on base to have their RISP issues.

Well, they were doing OK the last few games before the rainout…to be fair. One would think Nats pitching would help in that dept. I guess not.

by doubleh on Apr 16, 2009 8:46 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed, I was thinking mostly of tonight. The Phils have done a hell of a lot to get themselves out tonight. The Nats pitching could have helped, but our boys just didn’t have enough discipline (excluding Feliz – who never has it) to lay off the bad pitches.

Rollins needs a seat. I really think the WBC is partly responsible for this start. Fewer at bats in the preseason…

by FuquaManuel on Apr 16, 2009 8:48 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

It seems like a lot of guys were affected by the WBC. Look at Matsusaka…on the DL. I have to think that has something to do with the WBC and pitching at full velocity before he was fully stretched out in ST.

announcers

These Nats announcers are an awful price to pay (other than Debbie) to watch Phils. What Dave Barry said about Tax Day, time to sharpen your pencils and stab yourself in the aorta is how I feel abot having to listen to these clowns. Why did Chollie burn Dobbs lat inning – let him hit and let him play instead of Feliz (puke). And now, Chad Durbin – ugh!
