Phillies Breakfast Links: April 17, 2009
Full details for this weekend's Harry Kalas tributes.
The off days and celebrations/memorials have been a distraction.
Who will (try to) fill Harry's shoes? Is it really this guy?
Larry Bowa came up with "Outta here!"? Really?
Rollins is slumping. I wish I could figure this one out. I'm really vexed. He was raking in the WBC.
Despite no blown saves yet, Brad Lidge has been short of dominant so far.
In the minors - Lehigh Valley fell to Syracuse 5-4 in 12 innings (Carrasco 6 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 6 K), and Lehigh Valley is off to another terrific start at 2-5; Harrisburg defeated Reading 7-2 (Savery 4 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 3 K); and Lakewood topped Hagerstown 11-9 (Mattair 2-for-3 with 3 walks and 3 runs scored; Valle 3-for-4).

Bowa
I’m so glad that guy’s no longer with this organization.

+1. But is Dallas Green in some kind of cyrogenic chamber in the front office somewhere?

Kalas replacement
Options:
1. In house, I’m sorta predisposed to go with Franzke over McCarthy. Not a strong gut feeling, because to me it feels like all the new guys have such interchangeable voices and common inflections—I tend to blame SportsCenter for this. But there was something in the way Franzke looked on TV on Monday and hearing his talk on 610WIP the following morning——there was a genuineness, I guess, that made me think he could be the guy. It’ll take years though.
2. Out of house, I don’t recall the details behind Scott Graham’s departure. Rumor that it was Kalas-orchestrated? Don’t know.
3. Todd Kalas would be interesting—embarrassed to say that the thought never crossed my mind until I read that article. But if I were Todd Kalas, I think long-term I’d be happier where I am rather than trying to fill dad’s shoes.
4. McCarthy isn’t bad, and I’m sure loves his mom/wife/kids/dog, and there’s nothing I dislike about him really. But I believe there is deeply bad karma in hiring a guy who admits to growing up a Mets fan.
