if you are a phillies fan like I am, are you ready to push the panic button? is it too early to actually contemplate not even making the playoffs? before climbing the Walt Whitman we need to remember that at this time last year we were 7 1/2 back and people were calling for the firing of Charlie Manuel. We all know what happend and it would sure be great if that history repeated itself. But we realistically need to look at how thing are playing out in the present. First, the starting pitching. Brett Myers is up to his old tricks again of giving up the long ball early in the game. Yes he settles down after the 3rd inning, but by then the damage is already done. Cole Hamels has a sore elbow which is keeping his fastball in the mid 80's and he is having problems with his location. Jamie Moyer is finally showing his age and without the help of big strike zone umpires and impatient hitters will not repeat his win total of last season. Joe Blanton is a 500 pitcher, just like he was when he was with Oakland. The team era is over 7. Next is the bullpen. Lidge blows his first save and not being "lights out". Madsen not holding the lead and being the bridge to Lidge he was last year. And the hitting. Utley is back and doing well after his injury from last year. Howard is ok. Werth looks like he is going to have a career year and Pedro is contributing more. Ibanez is exactly what we were hoping for. Victorino is having a slow start. We are still stranding too many batters on the bags and even though we are scoring a good number of runs, it is the pitching that is killing us. Too early to panic? Not yet. But a week from now if we are double digits down in the standings, don't count on the Mets to help us out by choking and the Marlins to go on a long losing streak. Can you say first to worst?
