April 2, 2009 - Phillies Breakfast Links
The Phillies fell to the Yankees 8-5, with the Bombers slugging their way past young Kyle Drabek and J.A. Happ. Jayson Werth went deep for his sixth homer of the spring. The start was seen as a "reward" to Drabek for his increased maturity as a pitcher and a person. Awwww...
The New York Daily News previews the NL East, with only vague conclusions contained therein. Awesome art featuring a menacing Cole Hamels looming over a belligerent Mr. Met.
Phillies are still looking at Gary Sheffield. Kind of like asking an ugly girl to the dance and waiting nervously for her response...
Evicted from the rotation, J.A. Happ waits to see where he'll end up.
Raul Ibanez will not try to replace Pat Burrell; he will bat LEFT handed, thank you.
Phillies "Pup Rally" - 5 p.m. today at Rittenhouse Square, featuring Jen Utley and the PSPCA.
Murdered cops, budget crisis, corruption, blight, economic ruin... on the other hand, a World Championships. Eh, could be worse.
Except the Philadelphia Eagles, who are hella pissed, or they damn well should be! The neurosis of this city as applied to that team continues to amaze.
Former Phil Josh Outman named to Oakland's starting rotation.
USA Today picks Brett Myers to win the Cy Young Award. Run, Brett! Run far away!

BAHAHA
USA Today also picks Gil Meche to win the AL CY.
Actually, it’s not really clear from that article whether Shandler is seriously saying those various players would win the various awards, so much as that they are dark horses who could make noise in each category.
Still, though, Gil Meche.

101-61?
I like our team, but that seems a stretch. i’d take it, though…

"i'd take it"
Really? I think you’re really going out on a limb. It’s a tough call for me.

If Brett Myers wins the Cy Young award I will kill myself.
For I will have seen all that is to be seen.

Happ needs to keep it together because if Moyer keeps having starts like he did today, he’ll be in the rotation before long.
Moyers final line:
4.0 11 9 9 2 3 3 8.27
Yikes. Against the Nationals, no less.

It’s only ST, it’s only ST, it’s only ST.

Yes, let’s keep telling ourselves that. Hope they can all flip a switch.
BTW, Eaton outpitched Pelfrey today, but the O’s BP couldn’t hold it. Mets BP might be improved, but it might be gassed by midseason from overuse.

Ron Shandler
By the way, it’s not just USA Today predicting Brett Myers to be Cy Young. It’s Ron Shandler, who’s a major fantasy baseball guru. My experience with his projections is that he’s a bit behind others in terms of actual quantifying projections but he’s quite good at identifying who is under-/overestimated. I’m sure that makes him good at fantasy baseball. Basically, he’s taking the over on Brett Myers. Pinning down a 2.9 ERA and winning the Cy Young might be wrong, but 3.5 instead of 4.0-4.1 like most systems are projecting him at seems possible.

A day late and a dollar short, but really?
“But the area where the Phillies most significantly upgraded themselves was left field, replacing inconsistent Pat Burrell with the very consistent Raul Ibanez, who has more RBI over the past three seasons than Manny Ramirez.”
People think this way still?
For Who? My teammates.
For What? To Win.
How Much? Where do I sign?

Because of the internet.

Well – as the old timers are put out to pasture as the internet kills off more and more newspapers – i expect that there will be less people who make silly statements such as the one above.
But there will always be a new generation willing to buy into the hogwash of the old timers that perpetuate the myth – internet or not – plus as long as ‘the big boys’ on tv like FOX and ESPN continue to beat the drum of such things they’ll live in perpetuity to some extent
"Someone created the box score," Morey says, "and he should be shot."
Blocked shots — they look great, but unless you secure the ball afterward, you haven’t helped your team all that much.
