Happy Hour: Brewers at Phillies Game Thread, April 23, 2009.

Milwaukee Brewers at Philadelphia Phillies, Apr 23, 2009 1:05 PM EDT

Afternoon baseball!

The rubber match of the series between the Milwaukee Brewers and Philadelphia Phillies will take place today at Citizens Bank Park.

Right-handed Dave Bush, the Brewers' sole victor in last season's NLDS, takes on Cole Hamels, who had a pretty nice postseason as well.

Discuss the game here -- and please, be as descriptive as possible for those of us at work!

Use ESPN.com’s GameCast. It’s totally free, and I like it when I don’t get the game out here.

Hamels strikes out Weeks to start it off. Three fastballs, the last looking at 90.

Hamels paints the corner to strike out Weeks. Nice start, fastball at 90mph.

Has Dobbs played any at third so far this year?

by Walcott on Apr 23, 2009 1:20 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

No. And his career numbers vs. Bush are really good. But I guess Charlie figured (perhaps wrongly) that they could score off Bush without him, and that with the lefty Cole facing a righty-heavy Brewers lineup they’d be better off with Pete’s glove at third.

I don’t know what gamecast is, but you can look at MLB’s gameday. Go to the at bat and click on his name and it’ll show location. It looked to me like he was intentionally walking him and throwing some stuff out there to see if he would fish for anything.

This seems a little far-fetched.

If anything, the Gonzalez deal suggests that they have a clear shot at the one TE, Pettigrew, whom everyone seems excited about. But I still think they take a running back.

I just want the draft to be interesting

I’m not talking eagles – i’m talking over all – and i love when people criticize the eagles draft every year and yet somehow they seem to do well most years.

There’s a lot of stuff out there that ‘might’ happen – receivers moving on draft day – mark sanchez being in play if he’s available at 8 – (and how come there’s not ravinga bout him as a hispanic quarterback, have there been a lot of successful hispanic quarterbacks i missed?)

Idk, it just seems ridiculous to me. I just feel like you are making millions of dollars and you signed a contract. I guess if hes unhappy with his surroundings maybe that is legit. I dont have much sympathy for these athletes when it comes to contract negotiation. Do we know specifically what Sheldon in unhappy about?

There’s a reason for the saying ‘money doesn’t buy happiness’ – if you aren’t happy the amount of money you make isnt’ going to help.

I make a ‘comfortable’ salary – but i despise my job and if i could force a trade and still make the same money – i’d be vocal about it every damn day.

Athletes CAN make a lot of money – they can also suffer a shattered knee in the 3rd game of their career and lose half of what they were going to make and have to live on it for the rest of their lives

And most people forget that their ‘slaries’ are gross – not net – so there’s huge chunks coming out of it – and if you get that shattered knee in your first year you could be screwed.

I don’t hold anything against athletes demanding these things if they think they’re worth it – limited resources/unique abiilities, worth what people are willing to pay.

I don’t take it personal – i don’t become emotionally attached to guys and think they should feel ‘lucky’ or ‘rpoud’ to play for philadelphia – especially with the fan base history of underappreciating their stars (especially the non white ones) to a large degree

Durbin

turned back into a pumpkin last August. Wonder how long it will take the organization to realize as much.

by dajafi on Apr 23, 2009 3:20 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Too bad really. He seems like a nice enough guy.

by FuquaManuel on Apr 23, 2009 3:21 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, I don’t feel the same personal enmity as last year (which I think was fueled by the sure knowledge that he’d resuming sucking at some inopportune point)—he’s just not real good.

by dajafi on Apr 23, 2009 3:23 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hey – some of us (me maybe the only one) expected Romero to turn back into a pumpkin as well – maybe the phils think they got lucky once they will again?

"Someone created the box score," Morey says, "and he should be shot."

Yeah, Romero never really did regress, did he?

Romero

was a good situational lefty for most of his career. It looked like maybe he was on a downswing when Gillick got him, but the track record was much, much better than Durbin who had never had an above-average season till 2008.

Guy was on his 3rd team when the phillies picked him up – must have been having a crap season :)

Jeff Niemann had a perfect game through 4 innings last night

It was screwed up by a Jason Bartlett throwing error, and he proceeded to give up a walk and a 3-run homer (the only runs for the Mariners).

Obviously he has pressure issues.

Yes – and when did the main line expand that far?

I graduated from Lower Merion in 1990 – so i’m vaguely familiar with the area – we pretty much though the mainline stopped around kiddie city in ardmore

Bah – totally lame (and wikipedia is written by folks – so it’s not like the end all and be all) – all this inclusiveness has exapnded to make the main line too inclusive

Growing up it was just lower merion school district basically – now they’ve taken all these folks in trying to make them feel better about the awful places they grew up

Not really. I just bring up the fact that they are a city of bandwagon riders and if they want to come talk to me they should become a fan for longer than 2 years or 2 weeks for that matter . . .

They generally stutter claiming they have been long time fans as they are wearing their Crosby jersey they bought last month after realizing that Pittsburgh has a hockey team again just in time for playoffs.
