The "J"s Have It: Braves at Phillies, April 7, 2009.

Atlanta Braves at Philadelphia Phillies, Apr 7, 2009 7:05 PM EDT

Two nights after the party that crashed quickly, the Phillies resume the 2009 season, sending Ancient Former Mariner Jamie Moyer to the hill versus Atlanta Braves sophomore right hander Jair Jurrjens.

It's gonna be a frosty one in Philadelphia, with game time temperatures in the low to mid 40s expected.

Jurrjens gave the Phillies fits last year (.219/.279/.365) but the Phillies only managed a .231 BABIP against him, which implies that he was kind of lucky.  Hopefully that balances out tonight.

Obviously not a "must-win" game, but against a much improved divisional opponent, it'd be a really, really nice game to win.

Gee whiz. I think it might be one of those nights for Moyer. Already.

Settles down and gets 2 more outs. 2-0 Braves.

Werth is between Howard and Ibanez tonight. Good idea.

Would it not make more sense against a lefty – or waiting more than one game before jumping conclusions?

"Someone created the box score," Morey says, "and he should be shot."

Blocked shots — they look great, but unless you secure the ball afterward, you haven’t helped your team all that much.

It would, but I don’t like the idea of making the move FOR Cox by having Utley, Howard, and Ibanez in a row.

penalty

We have to spot every team two runs in the first all season?

is anyone else having issues with mlb.tv? i’m getting a Marlins-Mets game from a few years ago (featuring Brian Moehler and Steve Trachsel…exciting) instead of the normal audio…but the video is fine.

Per gameday, this ump has a wide strike zone. Should be good for Moyer.

Just getting in, but I don’t get the game out here in the boonies. What’s the story so far?

by Walcott on Apr 7, 2009 7:41 PM EDT reply actions

2 1st inning runs for the bad guys. Phillies have put some men on base to no avail thus far.

I thought Ibanez was supposed to be a good baserunner.

Leadoff double wasted by Feliz/Ruiz…might as well get used to seeing that now.

But at least Ibanez got the pitcher out of the way.

Various outlets told me various ‘good things’ about Raul Ibanez to make me think the signing didn’t suck and that pat would have been better – i didn’t believe any of them

Did any of the ‘second tier’ free agents (including buys like pat and abreu this off season) get a bigger contract than Ibanez? I mean after the contracts for manny and teixiera (i can’t spell it – i don’t care) ibanez had to be pretty up there right? (Non pitcher)

Jeez, if you are concerned NOW, i’d hate to see how you get when they amass a sample size large enough to make some real assessments.

Was at the game tonight....some observations

-It was freezing. The wind was blowing, and they ran out of hot chocolate in the 5th. I’ve been home an hour and my bones are still chilled. Brrrr.

-I’m not worried about Moyer yet despite today’s performance. He’ll still fill his role as a reliable 5-7 inning starter. Meyers, on the other hand, has always worried me. You just never know which guy is coming to the mound when he starts….

-Chase’s error was a a big deflating moment for the live crowd after we had already given up two homers. However, his quick play later in the game had the crowd on it;s feet in my section.

-Worst moment of the night. Opening pitch = plink!

-Best moment of the night = When Matt Stairs came up for Park, the crowd gave him a standing O, and remained on it’s feet until the full count out. That ball was sailing…the crowd blew up for a second, it really looked like it had the distance. A very deflating out…..

Atlanta is a lot better this year, and they look good. We had plenty of hits tonight, but no ribbies and thus no runs. 2 games in, I feel we have some rough edges to polish, but I’m confident this thing will come together for another great season. I’d love to seea good performance from Blanton tomorrow night and at least give us one win over Atlanta. I don;t want to worry about the Braves all year. They are good, but we are better. We just haven’t shown our stuff yet…

by The DH on Apr 8, 2009 12:05 AM EDT reply actions

Also...

Big Matt nails it here….

“They’re smarter,” Matt Stairs said about the Braves. “They hit the low line drives and cut the wind. We hit the high fly balls. But we’ve still got to start putting better at-bats together, I think. Atlanta has come out fired up the first two games.”

by The DH on Apr 8, 2009 12:09 AM EDT reply actions

Oh, and hats off to the bullpen, pitching 4 perfect innings in relief. Ok, I’m done now….
