Whom Will John Lannan Maim? Phillies at Nationals, May 15, 2009

Philadelphia Phillies at Washington Nationals, May 15, 2009 7:05 PM EDT

Phillies stars be on the lookout.  The true Phillie killer is on the mound tonight.  He has broken Chase Utley's hand.  He has injured Cole Hamels' ankle.  Which Phillies star will John Lannan maim next?  Hopefully no one.  But I wouldn't be surprised if Ryan Howard and Jimmy Rollins are a little extra cautious tonight.

The Phillies face the Nationals tonight to start a four game series.  Baseball Prospectus idol-wannabe MattS (more on that soon) has already covered the series more in depth than anyone anywhere, so go read that for a full preview.

The more fluff intro to the game here is this:  can the Phillies do anything to stem the tide of mediocrity they've been putting forth this season?  Will a visit with Mr. Hope and Change earlier today remind the Phillies of brighter days, as their World Series victory came six days before President Obama was elected?  Or will it keep the memories of last year in their heads enough so that they remain complacent, as their manager has alleged?

With the Mets on a 10-2 rampage these days, the Phils need to get on track.  Both offense and pitching need to click at the same time, something that has been a rarity these days.  And the dead weights need to come back to life (at least Lidge and Rollins, as Moyer won't start this series).

Is this the last stand of cupcakes?

"Someone created the box score," Morey says, "and he should be shot."

Yeesh…if this is cupcakes last stand, that would be supremely unfair because Moyer has been a good deal worse.

Everyone except Hamels recently has pretty much sucked – but right now only one guy (maybe) can be pulled because Happ is the only option…Moyer has a ‘longer’ track record I guess?

in fairness to feliz, if you look at the replay, that ball took a weird bounce back toward the catcher and died for a perfect opportunity for nieves to throw him out. i’m sure 95% of the time, the ball doesn’t bounce like that. probably worth the risk with the pitcher up anyway. what would his odds of scoring need to be to make it not worth trying? 15%? is that feliz’s odds of scoring otherwise? you take a shot with 2 outs and the pitcher up. bad bounce.

it was bad baserunning in that he slid weird and slowed down. but the decision to go was good.

did nieves screw up the throw trying to catch Werth stealing….or did he airmail a pickoff?

by Bilzo on May 15, 2009 11:24 PM EDT reply actions

Looked like it hit Ibanez and scooted into left field.

thanks….there’s only so much a gamelog can say.

by Bilzo on May 15, 2009 11:26 PM EDT up reply actions

NIeves did screw up the throw. It bounced on the infield dirt, then hit Ibanez, as it sailed to the 1B side.

by Wet Luzinski on May 15, 2009 11:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Werth was the lead runner at 3B. Ibanez the trail runner. Nieves threw to 2B

I just got home from work. Are my eyes deceiving me or do I see Feliz with four hits and Ruiz with three?

by phillyinportland on May 15, 2009 11:25 PM EDT reply actions

Feliz with four hits AND two walks.

Rollins and Utley = Feliz and Ruiz

DC radio: “I know it’s a long shot, but what happens if the Nats tie it up?”

Ummm…yeah.

Slowes and Jagler are entertaining, but dimwitted.

You have to cut them some slack. They are from NatsTown after all.

No, I know wha they mean. The bench is so short, we’d be looking at some interesting ABs.

the “-z” boys tonight:
11-17, 3R, 6 RBI, 4 BB

The 'z' boys

Looks like our three leading hitters for average right now are Ibanez, Feliz and Ruiz. Go figure.

by phillyinportland on May 15, 2009 11:34 PM EDT reply actions

I see a Danny Ozark tribute lineup tomorrow:

Feliz
Ruiz
Ibanez
Howard
Werth
Utley
Victorino
Rollins

If it gets them ten runs again, I’m all for it!

by phillyinportland on May 15, 2009 11:39 PM EDT up reply actions

ok…i’m confused..I’m looking at CBS sportsline’s feed.

The Nats have 2 more pitchers than the Phils, AND the same number of bench players. Are we 2 players light?

by Bilzo on May 15, 2009 11:35 PM EDT reply actions

i think sportsline is just putting DL or non-roster people on their pitchers list…

by Bilzo on May 15, 2009 11:35 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s entirely possible that the Nats have been DFA and calling up players during the game just to tread water.
